2. 1929- 1959
Talkies, Soundies, and shorts
One of the first real concepts of a music video was
a short film with music over the top, these were
called Talkies, soundies or shorts.
Most of these were produced by Warner bros as
seen by the image on the side.
Although these are not the same as the music
videos that are made today they do still have the
same concept. Also many music videos today still
use a narrative story line.
3. 1960- 1976
Promotional clips and others
In 1966 the Beatles starred in there own featured
film called “A Hard Days Night”. This film was
presented on screen as mockumentary. It was a
funny musical sequence which was used as a role
model for many more too follow on from it.
The Beatles then followed on from this to make
many more music videos named differently, for
example “Help!”
4. 1974- 1980
Beginnings of music television
This is when the idea of a music video became
a lot more popular as the TV programme top
of the pops became a large part of peoples
lives.
People went onto the programme to promote
there music which got it to become more
popular and this is how they got there music
across and how music videos were made.
Also in this period of time David Bowie with
his Ashes to Ashes music video, became the
most expensive music video to have been
made.
5. 1981-2005
Music video’s became mainstream
During the 1980’s MTV became more popular
when staring music videos. Due to this music
videos became a lot more creative and
expensive to create.
For example in 1983 Michael Jackson’s Thriller
music video was realised. This was one f the
biggest music videos at the time due to the
fact that it was similar to a film. To add to that
it had a lot of choregraphed dancing and
makeup involved in it.
6. 2005- onwards
Internet becomes video friendly
You Tube was then created as a platform to
store videos that people could choose to
upload through an account. This opened
opportunity for music videos and artists to
upload and promote their songs.
Therefore for artists to get there songs more
views they would make a more creative
music video.
