3. The 4Cs & STEM
In 2004, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21)
developed a list of the most important 21st century
skills for K-12 education. These skills are….

4. What makes a good STEM
lesson?
1. Focused on real issues or problems
2. Guided by engineering process
3. Immerse students in hands-on or open-ended
inquiry
4. Involve productive teamwork
5. Apply rigorous math and science content
6. Allow for multiple answers and frame failure as
necessary part of learning

9. Communication
They promote the 4Cs and when students…
Interpret: They learn/practice how to read and understand
graphs, charts, diagrams, and maps; find patterns in data and
interpret meaning; and argue from evidence to support their
interpretation. (Critical thinking)
Critique: They learn/practice how to use evidence to support an
argument. (Creativity, communication)
Create: They learn/practice how to analyze data, find and
explain patterns in data, and decide how to visually represent
that data. (Critical thinking, creativity, communication,
collaboration)

10. INFOgraphics
What are they?
Information graphics reveal the hidden, explain the
complex and illuminate the obscure. Constructing
visual representation of information is NOT mere
translation of what can be read to what can be
seen. It entails filtering the information, establishing
relationships, discerning patterns and representing
them in a manner that enables a consumer of that
information construct meaningful knowledge.
