How to Use a Map
Mapmakers provide several clues to help in understanding the information on map. Maps
Provide different clues, depending on their purpose or scale. However, most maps have several
clues in common.

Many Maps show
Direction by displaying a
compass rose within the
directions north, east,
south and west. The
Letters N, E, S, and W
are placed to indicate
these directions.
All maps have a Title. The title tells
you the subject of the Map.

Key:
Locator Globe:
Often a Map has a key, or legend.
The Key shows the meaning of the
symbols and colors used on the map.
Many maps are shown with
locator globes. They show where
on Earth the Area of map is
located.
