About the Webinar In May 2012, the Library of Congress announced a new modeling initiative focused on reflecting the MARC 21 library standard as a Linked Data model for the Web, with an initial model to be proposed by the consulting company Zepheira. The goal of the initiative is to translate the MARC 21 format to a Linked Data model while retaining the richness and benefits of existing data in the historical format. In this webinar, Eric Miller of Zepheira will report on progress towards this important goal, starting with an analysis of the translation problem and concluding with potential migration scenarios for a broad-based transition from MARC to a new bibliographic framework.

Tutorial at OAI5 (cern.ch/oai5). Abstract: This tutorial will provide a practical overview of current practices in modelling complex or compound digital objects. It will examine some of the key scenarios around creating complex objects and will explore a number of approaches to packaging and transport. Taking research papers, or scholarly works, as an example, the tutorial will explore the different ways in which these, and their descriptive metadata, can be treated as complex objects. Relevant application profiles and metadata formats will be introduced and compared, such as Dublin Core, in particular the DCMI Abstract Model, and MODS, alongside content packaging standards, such as METS MPEG 21 DIDL and IMS CP. Finally, we will consider some future issues and activities that are seeking to address these. The tutorial will be of interest to librarians and technical staff with an interest in metadata or complex objects, their creation, management and re-use.

This presentation proposed a conceptual model to model user's info seeking behavior in the context of their experience and use the model to improve library's collections and services using St. John's University Libraries for case study. It reviewed Web content technologies offered by IT vendors, and compared what offered in content technologies by Library IT vendors. To fill in the gap, It developed the preliminary proposal for 1) required data architecture in SOA framework, 2) desired features for managing library print and electronic content on library's website, 3) adoption of Semantic Web standards and technologies for managing library resources, and 4) the case study scenario with sample conceptual model.

Professional catalogers in an academic library have professional responsibilities in librarianship, scholarship, and services to the library, institute, and professional organizations. However, whatever the catalogers do have to be in alignment with strategic directions of the academic library, and contribute to its institutional effectiveness. This presentation uses several projects from Georgia Tech Library as examples to illuminate the subject matter on the role cataloger in the 21st century academic library. It first discusses the role of cataloger in assisting the removal of print collections out of GT Library building and creating a seamless collection with Emory resources in EmTech Library Services Center (LSC). It then discusses the role of cataloger in cataloging and metadata management from the perspectives of resource discovery, data curation, repository services, eResearch archive, and digitization.

World Wide Web has revolutionized the means of data availability, but with its current structure model , it is becoming increasingly difficult to retrieve relevant information, with reasonable precision and recall, using the major search engines. However, with use of metadata, combined with the use of improved searching techniques, helps to enhance relevant information retrieval .The design of structured, descriptions of Web resources enables greater search precision and a more accurate relevance ranking of retrieved information .One such efforts towards standardization is , Dublin Core standard, which has been developed as Metadata Standard and also other standards which enhances retrieval of a wide range of information resources. This paper discuses the importance of metadata, various metadata schemas and elements, and the need of standardization of Metadata. This paper further discusses how the metadata can be generated using various tools which assist intelligent agents for efficient retrieval

Over the past decade, as the scholarly community’s reliance on e-content has increased, so too has the development of preservation-related digital repositories. The need for descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata for each digital object in a preservation repository was clearly recognized by digital archivists and curators. However, in the early 2000’s, most of the published specifications for preservation-related metadata were either implementation specific or broadly theoretical. In 2003, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and Research Libraries Group (RLG) established an international working group called PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) to develop a common core set of metadata elements for digital preservation. The first version of the PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata and its supporting XML schema was issued in 2005. Experience using its specifications in preservation repositories has led to several revisions, with the completion of a version 2.0 in 2008. The Data Dictionary is now in version 2.2 (July 2012), and it is widely implemented in preservation repositories throughout the world in multiple domains.

UPDATED and REPLACED with new file June 2014 Simplified presentation on library metadata evolution, the perils of not curating the metadata properly, and how it's being used "in the wild". But…it’s all on the internet and a keyword search will find it, right? Not exactly... There's been a massive change in cataloging in libraries with the rise of the internet. Everything is connected, including our metadata. Catalogers are no longer isolated, and metadata management is no longer just an internal process. Everything we do now links to the wider world of metadata, pushing libraries into re-purposing our long-held work into the new frontiers of identity management and linked data.

Metadata provides a foundation for the cross-channel experiences we consume in the dawn of the 21st century by enabling consistency, context and interoperability. While Metadata is key to many of the User Experience methods we use – from triggering Content Strategy workflows to enabling faceted search through groups, sorts and filters, it remains a mystery to many of us. This session is a crash course on Metadata in the 21st century for UX Designers. We'll look at recent developments in the field, and build an understanding of how Metadata enables the exchange of information between parties, channels, systems and platforms through semantic, syntax and lexical specifications. Attendees will understand how Metadata fits into UX methods and tools they already know – using an ontology to support a mental model for example. This session is a must for all UX Designers looking to build meaningful cross-channel experiences in an increasingly interlinked world.

Readmission rates in hospitals are a key indicator on quality of patient care and a clear indication of total cost or inconvenience related to the treatment. Patients with serious medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus are key drivers of readmission rates owing to the complexity of their illness. Therefore, being able to predict based on certain features whether or not a patient will need readmission can help doctors and hospitals provide better care initially and not get financially penalized under Obamacare’s readmission policy
