2. PERSONAL STATEMENT
While I enjoy both computer based and artistic pursuits, I find the idea of applying creativity approaches to technical software very
appealing. I am very interested in drawing animals and fictional creatures; something I think would be beneficial, especially when it
comes to character creation and animation. Drawing is a keen passion of mine, so more coursework and lecture oriented courses would
suit me very well, as I find I am able to motivate and apply myself in self-directed study sessions. Through university, I would hope to
develop my drawing skills, taking a keen interest in the anatomical side of animation / how muscles strain and interact, and how this can
reflect tension and mood in a movement. I am constantly striving to improve my skills in the area of drawing and animation in general,
and I university would give me a good overview in all the relevant specialised areas and help me to develop my abilities in a wide range of
expertise- both artistically and technically.
Over the past year at college, I have covered a diverse range of skills which I think have provided me with a good foundation of pertinent
knowledge and skills. This would no doubt be of great help in the near future; giving me a good skillset I can thereby improve and expand
as I gain more experience working in the industry. I have experience with both 2D and 3D animation, on professionally recognised
software: Adobe’s ‘Flash’ and Newtek’s ‘lightwave’, 'Photoshop', 'Illustrator' etc. A flash project flash provided me with both essential 2D
animation skills as well as touching on the programming side of things. This was reinforced by a course outside college I was progressing
though at around the same time; the course was made up of live online sessions and was funded and run by Adobe. Flash however, isn’t
personally my first choice for animation. At home, I typically create animations using software I am more comfortable with such as
‘Gimp’. Though I would like to expand knowledge of different program functionality and get a wider and more thorough expertise, I think
that the software knowledge I have already attained will provide for an excellent starting point. Lightwave is a good program for 3D
modelling and animation, and is sometimes used in the industry, and I have been able to understand the basics of box modelling though
practising with this software. Theory work alongside the practical work on software, has given me a much better grasp of the different
techniques involved in animation and modelling and there are many topics that interest me and I would certainly be keen in delving
further into. Aside from character creation, I have also completed other projects more oriented toward programming; While I am keen on
the artist side of things, I also enjoy computing work and I recognise that this combination of both technical and creative is an extremely
good mix, especially when it comes to the computer games industry. During my work at college looking at programming, we used
software known as 'Game maker'. Although our class wasn't taught much to do with direct scripting (mostly just drag and drop (getting
used to the algorithms)), I took it upon myself to research coding myself at home. With this, I was able to produce a more cohesive and
able game than I would otherwise have been able to. For this particular project, we were required to work in groups. The work ethic of all
the members was not great, and admittedly I ended up taking on a lot more of the work than I should have done. However I think this does
indeed demonstrate my ability to work harmoniously in a team, and the fact that I really do put my head down and do whatever it takes
rather just buckling under the pressure when it gets tough. I've learnt a lot the past couple of years; but I'd hope this is just the beginning of
my journey and development.
