How does Social Media
define beauty ?
By:Alexandra Robinson
Rating Women
While grazing through my news feed on
Facebook I noticed a lot of people had
statuses such as “ Like for a rate”, or “Smash
or Pass”. It got me thinking what is my
number should I let a guy or girl decide how
beautiful I am? What is beauty? Is beauty only
a number or a letter?
What’s your rate
What is beauty?
“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she
wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she
combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in
her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart,
the place where love resides. True beauty in a
woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that
she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the
beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”
― Audrey Hepburn
“ Why don’t I look like her?
● In Elle magazine they had an article called “Why Don’t I look like her?:
How is instagram ruining our self esteem”. In the article it talked about
how a lot of women who were seen as beautiful on social media and have
tons of likes on instagram do not find themselves beautiful outside of
social media.
● Research from Buffalo University showed that women who base their
self- worth on appearance, tend to post more photos so they can find
validation of their beauty.
● Dove did a recent study and found that 82%
of women believe that social media is
influencing how we define beauty today.
● · Women wrote more than 5 million
negative tweets in 2014.
● Four out of every five negative beauty
tweets from women were about
themselves.
● Women are 50 percent more likely to say
something negative (rather than positive)
about themselves on social media.

Doves Campaign For Beauty
● The Campaign is called #speakbeautiful.
They are trying to encourage women to be
more confident and raise their self
esteems.
● “You are your own worst enemy. If you can
learn to stop expecting impossible
perfection, in yourself and others, you may
find the happiness that has always eluded
you.― Lisa Kleypas, Love in the Afternoon
Social Media
● Social media has made it very easy to come up with your own definition
of beauty, but it has also made it easier than ever to judge someone who
is a different kind of beautiful.
● 4,400 suicides in the U.S. each year are caused by social media.
● The things that make us beautiful are also what can put a target on your
back.
● People across the country are trying to make the internet and social
media a safe outlet for people to show how beautiful girl really is.
