2. Discipleship
Disciple
Old English Discipul (fem. Discipula), "one who follows another for the purpose of learning," especially "the
personal followers of Jesus Christ during his life, the twelve Apostles chosen or called by him to be his
immediate associates," a Biblical borrowing from Latin //Discipulus // "pupil, student, follower," which is of
uncertain origin.
It was not common in Old English, where the usual word was // leorningcniht //.
The pre-Christian Latin sense of "scholar, pupil, student" is rare in English. Meaning "one who follows or is
influenced by the doctrine or example of another" is from c. 1300.

5. Discipleship
Apostle vs. Disciple
In Christianity, the disciples were the students of Jesus during his ministry. While Jesus attracted a large
following, the term disciple is commonly used to refer specifically to the twelve apostles.
In addition, the gospels and the Book of Acts refer to varying numbers of disciples that range between 70 and
120 to a "growing multitude".
The word disciple is used today as a way of self-identification for those who seek to learn from the teachings of
Jesus, such as the Sermon on the Mount.
