2. WHAT IS TYPE 2 DIABETES?
Type 2 diabetes just mean that a person has too much glucose,
or sugar, in your blood. It make some insulin for the body, but
either the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, or the body
cannot use the insulin well enough. So, this usually means that
the body cannot maintain a balanced blood sugar level.
3. WHO IS AT RISK?
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes with millions of
Americans diagnosed and many more undiagnosed. Most of the people
who are at risk usually have qualities such as:
• They are over 45
• Obese or Overweight
• Have High Blood Pressure
• Not enough exercise
• A family member also had type 2 diabetes
4. WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY?
Over time, the high glucose levels in the blood can damage the
nerves and small blood vessels in the eyes, kidneys, and heart.
When a person’s blood sugar level in low, he/she feel weak and
dizzy. When a person’s blood sugar is high, his/her eyes get
blurry and you feel a lot of energy. A normal blood sugar usually
is 100mg/dl when fasting, but less than 140mg/dl two hours
after eating.
5. KNOWING THE SYMPTOMS.
Some symptoms consist of:
• Excessive thirst and appetite
• Increased urination
• Unusual weight loss or gain
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Dry mouth
• Itching skin
6. DON’T FREAK OUT!
People with type 2 diabetes often do not have any symptoms.
When the symptoms do occur, they are often ignored because
they may not seem serious. The symptoms usually develop much
more suddenly and are a lot more severe then normal. So, when
the symptoms get more and more severe, go visit your doctor.
7. WHEN SHOULD YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR?
• (As I mentioned in the slide before) When the symptoms get
way worse.
• When you feel weak or different they you usually do.
• Slow-Healing sores and cuts
• Drowsy more often
All of these symptoms can be severe and dangerous. So, go to
the doctor as soon as you have any of these.
8. TREATMENTS
When visiting the doctor, he/she will test your blood sugar and
see how severe your case of diabetes are. After they determine
that, there are many treatments available for type 2 diabetes
such as:
• Eating Healthy
• Regular exercise
• Possibly, insulin treatment
• Blood sugar monitoring
9. EATING HEALTHY
• A healthy diet for diabetics usually have to do with whole
grained, and whole wheat things, corn products (popcorn, corn,
ect.), sugar free snacks, and if you want sweets or soda, use
diet and sugar free products.
10. EXERCISING
Usually with diabetes, you can do any exercise that you are
capable of. The only thing to be worried about is sweating too
much that your blood sugar level drops too low. If it does, just
eat something with sugar and if should go straight back up.
11. INSULIN TREATMENT
• Diabetic medication, usually just puts insulin into your body
through syringes. The doctor will prescribe you with the
amount of insulin that your body isn’t making or using. They
determine how much with the test they gave you at your visit.
You’ll only use it if you need it because your blood sugar is too
high.
