2. Introduction
Pediatric otolaryngologist Rande Lazar, MD, is the
founder of ENT Memphis. A pioneer in upper airway
reconstruction in the Mid-South United States, Rande
Lazar, MD, treats an array of disorders, including
snoring-related issues.
A common nightly occurrence with disruptive effects,
snoring affects nearly 50% of all adults, half of whom
snore regularly. Heavy snorers can snore in any
sleeping position and disrupt the sleep of those within
hearing range.
3. About Snoring
Snoring results from airway obstruction; when the muscles
and tissues at the back of the mouth and throat relax in
sleep, moving air causes audible vibrations. Children who
snore often suffer from swollen tonsils or adenoids, which
can usually be resolved by surgery.
Snoring can cause more than sleep disruption in affected
persons. Potential associated issues include depression and
deficits in attention. Physicians recommend that heavy
snorers submit to an otolaryngologist examination to
determine if they have a more serious medical problem,
namely, sleep apnea.
