The European Maturity Model for Blended Education is a framework which can help educators and institutions to take the next step in blended education. The framework consists of 3 levels (course, programme, and institution) and for each level dimensions and indicators have been developed. This can be used to self assess the maturity of a blended course, programme or institution.. The EMBED implementation guidelines offer support for educators, course teams, instructional designers and management to mature in blended education. For each of the 21 dimensions guidelines have been written to reach the next maturity level. The guidelines include educational models, articles, research, and tools. A successful foreign language instruction program must effectively engage learners in ways that personalize and enliven the curriculum while motivating students to apply their learning to the real world. The learning environment is a key factor in determining the efficacy of learning, and as such it must be optimized. In this session, participants will discuss strategies for building a warm and active online community through welcome letters, discussion forums and group activities for collaborative learning. We will also focus on how to write an online course syllabus, and review the use of online assessment tools in online teaching.

Talk presented at Media and Learning 2022 What is more effective? Supporting teachers to improve their teaching, or students to become more productive in making the most out of the teaching they receive? This is a question many university centres for teaching are grappling with. On the one hand, their remit is to focus on building the skills of their teaching staff. But on the other hand, students often lack skills in dealing with content that are wrongly assumed to be ‘natural’. This presentation will contrast two guides created to support the use of multimedia: one for academics creating instructional videos and one for students accessing recorded lectures. This comparison will show that the guides show relatively little overlap because the needs of creators and viewers of multimedia may not be perfectly aligned. I will discuss ways in which this disparity could be addressed both individually and institutionally.
