3. FourTips for Effective Short StoryWriting
Some writers may believe that the short story is a simplified form of the novel. In fact,
a short work of fiction is an entirely different challenge. For amateur creative writers,
short stories should focus on four key elements, beginning with a central character.
Unlike the protagonists of novels, who can develop over several hundred pages,
characters in short stories must be presented to the reader as clearly defined as
possible, primed to make a life-defining decision within the first few paragraphs.
Second, the main character should also demonstrate a desire. Novels can rely on
overarching themes and motifs to entertain the reader and comment on society, but
short stories do not have that sprawling luxury. The character must want something
immediate and constantly act toward achieving that aim .

Conflict, the third area of focus for a writer, represents the bulk of the story.
Writers should challenge themselves to present their characters with the most
unusual, compelling obstacles to overcome before reaching, or not reaching,
their goals. Finally, a short story must signal some sort of change. The
character may change, or the world around the character may become
different, or possibly the reader is changed. As writers progress, they can
additionally focus on developing stylistic hallmarks for their stories.
