Still life is a genre of art that depicts inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on). Artists use color, texture, composition and other aspects of design to create visual interest and arrange objects for maximum aesthetic effect. Still life paintings, drawings, and other works give artists interpretive scope to develop their own styles and express their ideas about the objects they depict.
