Case study on Vulnerability and Marginalized Populations How should public health professionals interact with families undergoing health crises? How should public health professionals interact with the media in high profile cases? How can understanding the experience of Louise Troh and her family help me become a better public health professional? This week, instead of discussing a case study from your book, we are going to consider the experience of Louise Troh and her family. The goal is for you to work on your intellectual empathy give consideration to how you will interact with individuals who are vulnerable. Be sure to view the video news clips posted in this module for a sampling of the media coverage during the 2014 Ebola incident in Dallas. Phase 1: Analyze Louise Troh's experience In the first part of your discussion board, you will address several questions about the Louise Troh's memoir My Spirit Took You In: The Romance that Sparked an Epidemic of Fear . I’d like for each member of the team to choose one question to address. Let your team know early in the week which question you will be answering. 1. Before the scientific era, those with mental illness were seen by society as different or being punished for sins or violating a taboo. When Sigmund Freud started to do his research on developmental psychology was when people started to understand that mental disorders are not because of a religious punishment and did not need to be excluded from society was when those with a mental disorder started to get help. In today's modern society there are a lot of resources available for those who have a mental illness. In the past decade, I believe there has been a lot more acceptance and tolerance of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. But I think there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Living in San Diego there is a homeless problem and it's unfortunate common knowledge that a lot of them live on the streets because of mental illness whether it be because of addiction or schizophrenia to name a few. There are charities and resources out there that work to help get these people off the street but I think there is a lot of work that still needs to be done with regards to acceptance and getting people the treatment that they need if they have a mental disorder. Utilitarianism The ethical position depends on the consequences of the action with the goal being producing the most good. Utilitarian theory prioritizes the consequences (or utility) of an act over the application of universal principles (Mill, 1861/1957). From this perspective, an ethical decision is situation specific and must be governed by a risk-benefit calculus that determines which act will produce the greatest possible balance of good over bad consequences. An "act utilitarian" makes an ethical decision by evaluating the consequences of an act for a given situation.
