History’s Impact
Historical information which I gathered, greatly transformed my
opinion towards the relation of one’s personal situation and
historical events of the era in which we are living. In 1992 I
was born in Arizona. I developed strong bonding with my
mother as she was a single mother and she was quite good in
horse riding and conducting riding lessons for children and
adults. We often used to go for family outings riding the horses
on the trails to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Arizona. Growing
up as a child we had a really un stable home and things were
always all over the place as far as men in and out of the home,
different homes and my mother’s health.
I remember when the world trade centers were attacked. This
created a sort of uncertainty and caused a total damage of about
$23 billion and $37 billion. We moved and got some land in
Arizona so my Mother could expand her business in child
entertainment. We had a portable pony ring and petting zoo and
fun small carnival games. Also, at that time we had a curve ball
hit us and I was diagnosed with a small cancerous tumor inside
my mouth. In the era of Bill Clinton, the economy of USA
remained well and there was not any big political issue except
the rumors and hiring of his scandal. In 2000 George W. Bush
was elected as the new president of United States. And a sudden
change in USA policies emerged after the World Trade Center
was attacked by terrorists on 11 September. Tight Transport
Security Administration was established in November 2001.
Through investigation lead to the common belief that the
September 11 attack was planned by Osama bin Laden. So, for
the search of Osama bin Laden and his group, United States
attacked Afghanistan along with NATO. In 2003 United States
also invaded Iraq and I remember just sitting in my school
classroom in fourth grade in fear and shock and not knowing
what was going to happen. Bush was highly criticized and as a
result, Barack Obama was elected as President in 2008. To
lighten the impact of worst recession of Bush era, African-
American President passed reforms on health care and banking.
In 2011, Iraq and America combat were over, and I had just
graduated high school. I wanted to be apart of the fight for our
country, so I joined the army in late 2010 but left for basic in
January 2011.
Obama policies were effective enough and lower the rate of
unemployment below 7.8%. In 2013, Barack Obama was elected
as president second time. Obama passed number of bills to
stabilize the economy, agreed on oil drilling handled Ebola
Virus outbreak, in which my husband helped fight, launched
“Star Wars” satellite program and initiated Student Debt relief
program. I was active duty at this time and had always wanted
to start school but was just not in place yet to do that with a
deployed husband and two very young babies. Obama started a
policy regarding financial aid and student loans. His Student
Aid Bill helped a lot to solve the student debt problems and
facilitated a lot of students in paying school loans faster.
Clinton received huge support from college graduates (52%-
43%) by 9-point margin, while Trump was supported by non-
college goers (52% - 44 %). Regardless of campaign efforts,
Donald Trump became the President of the United States
(Krugman, 2016). Trump policies were received as controversial
one; he ordered about the tight monitoring of security concerns
and suspended the entry of people belonging to Iraq, Iran,
Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya. I was quite curious
regarding the Trump policies related to education and health.
Mostly because I was about to be getting out of the military in
2016 and this would obviously be important for me to know and
be aware of how that may affect me or my family. Fortunately
having Tri Care for health coverage, we were not really
affected.
This is all about my personal recollection and its relation to
history. It provides me deep insight that both are interlinked to
each other. History is related to study of past events and
recollection is also about the remembrance of your life past
events. Both are strongly interlinked to one another. It was a
true joy being able to go back and remember the events that
happened in my life. Some things brought smiles and others
may have brought a tear or two. But also being able to compare
what was going on in my personal life at the time, especially in
my younger years, seeing what was going on in the big picture
of the world as a whole.

Week Five Signature Assignment
for LBSU 304 – Dr. John Freed instructor
Brandman University

History's Impact
Events throughout history have impacted our daily lives in
different ways. For example,
the September 11 terrorist attacks, where four passenger
airliners were hijacked and crashed on
the World Trade Center and other locations in the United States.
As a result, we now have TSA
pat-downs, quantity-based liquid bans, and passengers are
required to remove their shoes for X-
ray scanning. When I fly I get frustrated because of the long
lines and how we have to take off
our shoes and get searched. Events will continue to occur every
day and those events will
continue to change our lives and the way we live.
The historical information I researched changed my perspective
on some events of my
life. Certain events that occurred changed and affected my
everyday life without me even
noticing until now. The 2012 election between President Obama
and Mitt Romney election result
was an event that would affect my life for a long time. In 2012,
I returned back to school, and I
depended on Financial Aid and school loans to pay for my
studies. When President Obama won
the election, I was excited and happy because he supported
financial aid and school loans for
students that could not afford to attend school. In 2015
president Obama created the Student Aid
Bill of Rights to help take action on the student debt problem,
and provide borrowers with more

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_hijacking

rights and protections. According to the Student Debt Relief
website the current average
borrowers student loan debt at $28,400, and the average default
rate at nearly 14%. This election
helped me with school because more financial programs were
available for me to use. The
Student Debt Relief impacted my life because it helped me pay
my school loans faster. In
addition, working in special education, hygiene is a big priority.
In special education students
take longer learning hygiene skills. Special needs students need
to be reminded not to sneeze all
over, have their hands in their mouth, touch different areas of
their bodies, and sometimes have
trouble going to the restroom. When I first started working with
special need students the Ebola
virus began spreading and was big news. Nobody had any
knowledge of what the Ebola Virus
was, and how it was spreading and killing people. We would
receive all of the information from
the news. The news anchors reported that the virus was easy to
spread and people were dying
because they were getting affected. The news was that the virus
was spreading in the United
States and this caused panic around the country. I remember
schools and teachers were scared.
We were asked to sanitize the classroom and report everything
because we were scared of
getting sick. The Ebola outbreak spread rapidly and became the
deadliest occurrence of the
disease since its discovery in 1976. A total number of reported
cases is about 28,637 that were
affected by the Ebola virus according to The World Health
Organization.
Furthermore, the 2016 presidential election is probably the most
important event that will
affect my life. In 2016 Donald Trump became the President of
the United States. Presidents
trump policies are very controversial. Trump winning will affect
me and my education. In 2015,
I decided to transfer school to receive my Bachelor degree.
Donald Trump winning can affect
my financial aid assistance because he plans of cutting funding.
According to Alec Tyson and
Shiva Maniam authors of “Behind Trump’s victory: Divisions
by race, gender, education”
http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/11/13/average-
student-loan-debt-hits-30-000

student-loan-debt-hits-30-000
http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/default-rates-continue-
rise-federal-student-loans
College graduates backed Clinton by a 9-point margin (52%-
43%), while those without a college
degree backed Trump 52%-44%. This statistic shows how
college graduates were looking for a
more stable vision from a president that supported current
students and financial help for
students.
The relationship between personal recollection, history, and
quantitative data is the act of
re-collecting. Recollection represents recalling to mind;
remembrance. History is the branch of
knowledge dealing with past events, and quantitative data
means information that can be
measured and written down with numbers. In order to get
quantitative data, we need a historic
event. We need an event to gather the data, and in order to
gather information we need to recall
the past event. Personal recollection, history, and quantitative
data are all inter-related because
you can’t reliably get the information from one without the
other two.

WEEK 5 ASSIGNMENT - YOU AND HISTORY
Instructions:
This assignment combines your personal impressions during a
particular time period in your life
vis-à-vis broader historical events. For the most complete
understanding of any historical period
you need data, including quantitative sources of information.
History and historiography require
studying many sources of data. As the Association of American
Colleges and Universities points
out students should have the ability to make judgments and
draw appropriate conclusions based
on the quantitative analysis of data. Students should also have
the ability to make and evaluate
important assumptions in data analysis, and they should be able
to express quantitative evidence
in support of their arguments. In this case, you will enhance
your historical awareness of a short
period of time by availing yourself of readily available
quantitative data to form a more detailed
and possibly nuanced picture of a specific time period that is
also personally important to you.
There are 4 steps to completing this assignment, noted below.
The first three steps are crucial for
preparation, and the fourth step details the reflection you will
submit.
Step 1:
Keeping your readings and video clips in mind, create a
timeline that includes four situations, related to
jobs, your profession, education, or any other important events
in your life that you are comfortable
sharing with your reader. List each situation or event and
roughly note the year or range, such as 2006
to 2009. Then match your personal history with important
historical events occurring during that same
time period. Identify whether or not there is a relationship
between the historical events and your
personal situations and/or life events. Your timeline is
necessary for this assignment, and you will
submit it along with your reflection. Below Step 3, you will see
an example for setting up your timeline.
Step 2:
After creating the personal timeline, list and describe some of
the corresponding historical events that
occurred during the same time period. In other words, research
the time period that coincides with each
of the four personal events, and mention some of the important
historical occurrences, in particular
those you had not considered, were not aware of, or had simply
forgotten. Your list will help you
prepare to write your reflection.
Step 3:
Go to a research website such as PewResearchCenter website
(http://www.pewresearch.org/data/ and
http://www.people-press.org/datasets/2008/) or a research site
of your choosing to seek quantitative
data that tracks how people rated three key indicators, for
example, Personal Finances, Economic
Conditions, or even Social Networking Use and track the data
that corresponds with your timeline. Once
you have completed Steps 1-3, you will be able to complete the
timeline. Please use a table such as the
one below.

Terrorism, Political Upheavals,
etc.)
2006 to 2009 Key Indicators*
(e.g. Personal Finances,
Economic Conditions in your
town, and/or the use of social
networks)
Your dates will differ according
the events in your life.
* For this assignment, a key indicator is defined as specific
information that points to, measures or
otherwise provides a summary overview of specific financial,
economic, social and/or political
conditions. For example, an increase in home buying is used as
an indication of growing economic
strength and confidence; a decrease in voter turnout is used as
an indication of political dissatisfaction.
Step 4 (Reflection based on timeline information):
In a minimum of 750 words, write an essay that reflects on
changes your perspective on some of
the personal situations/events in your life, and, if so, how?
and interpret the data, offers
evidence to support or differ with your personal recollections,
assumptions, impressions, and
personal situation for the time period you selected in the
timeline. Are the key indicators you
selected very different today from the time period you
researched? How so?
personal recollection, history, and
quantitative data? Are personal recollections, history, and
quantitative data the same thing and
are they the same thing as facts? Are there limits to what the
data captures?
Be sure to provide references for the historical sources you
researched and for the research site or
sites you consult. Please review the rubric for detailed
expectations of your final submission.
Save your timeline and reflection as one document.
Save your writing assignment as a doc or rtf with your name and
the assignment name in the Signature
Assignment file, using Last Name_Assignment. So, if your
name were Alicia Jackson, and this is the You
& History writing assignment, you would title it Jackson_You &

The historical information I researched, changed my
perspective on one personal
situation in particular. The year I was born, 1988, was right
after apartheid had ended in South
Africa. For example, according to A. (2016), on May 31st,
1988, over 200 South-African
religious leaders including those of Christian, Muslim, Jewish,
and Hindu Faith, concluded after
a 48-hour meeting, to start a non-violent program to end
apartheid. I was essentially born into the
residue of what apartheid had left behind. I had a fairly
satisfying childhood all throughout the
90’s, due to the outstanding care received from my parents.
However, I also spent my 90’s in
fear, and experienced a lot of hate as a white female, because of
the division, segregation, and
hatred within the country at that time. The hatred lead to an
increase in crime. The revolver my
mother slept with under her pillow at night, was the same
revolver I learned how to use at the age
of 6 “in case of emergencies.” After some research on
unemployment in South Africa during the
1990’s and 2000’s, I found that the unemployment rate was
31.5% in 1994 according to A.
Check (2017), and Forbes rated South Africa the #1 highest
unemployed country in 2000 (M.
Patton, 2015). I believe that most of the crime during that
period was not only due to the results
of Apartheid, but also the unemployment and extreme poverty
that the country faced. When
unemployment strikes for such a long period of time, people
would do the unthinkable out of
desperation to provide for their families’ needs.
The quantitative data of the TSA at the airport supported my
personal situation during the
time my family and I moved to the United States from South
Africa in December 2001, only
three months after the terrorist attack. According to C. & T.
(n.d.) Al-Qaeda, Islamic terrorist
group, coordinated that two planes crash into the north and
south tower of the world trade center,
and the third plane into the pentagon. This attack left 2,996
people dead, and over 6,000 injured.
The entire move was exciting as a 12-year-old, but also very
stressful at the airport because of
the increase in security. For example, Transport Security
Administration was only established in
November 2001 due to the terrorist attack that had taken place,
and sky marshals increased from
fewer than 100 to more than several thousand by 2004 (IATA,
2016). At that time, I specifically
remember how serious and intimidating the airport felt. On the
other hand, my parent’s divorce
had no connection to the natural disasters faced in 2005, nor did
the quantitative data have any
correlation. According to D.C. Beckwith (2005), in 2005,
600,000 jobs were eliminated, the
shipping traffic disrupted, refining shut down, and gasoline
prices raised to $3 per gallon
nationwide due to Hurricane Katrina. My family was not
directly affected because we were
based in California in 2005, and nowhere near the Bahamas,
Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Georgia, or Alabama at the time of the hurricane. The data even
suggests that 2005 was a banner
year for the U.S economy after the natural disasters. Over 2
million new jobs were created, and
caused the unemployment rate to fall from 5.4% to 4.9% (D.C.
Beckwith, 2005). As much as I
wish I could have blamed my parent’s divorce on the economy
or natural disasters at the time, it
was purely an outside decision based upon the struggles within
the marriage. A few key
indicators from 2005 through 2010 include the rise of social
media. Social media started taking
the world by storm, rapidly expanding each year. According to
Graves (n.d.), in 2005, Facebook
went from The Facebook where it was only available to college
students, to Facebook when it
became available to everyone. That same year YouTube was
invented, allowing individuals to
share videos worldwide. In 2006, Twitter was introduced, and in
2007, according to R. Ritchie
(2017), the iPhone was invented. In 2010, social media users
worldwide increased from .97
billion users in 2010, to 2.62 billion in 2017 (Statista, n.d.). The
invention of the iPhone and
social media played a big role in my senior year of high school
and the years to follow. I have
remained friends with the individuals I graduated with through
social media. It has helped us
remain in contact and stay updated on one another’s lives.
Social media also played a large role
in the election of Barack Obama. For example, according to J.
Eilperin (2015) the head of the
White House Office of Public Engagement, Paulette Aniskoff,
“had journeyed from Washington
to the offices of the entertainment company Live Nation for a
strategy session on how YouTube
and Vine stars could use their digital celebrity to promote some
of the Obama administration’s
key policies.” I believe Obama paved the way for presidents to
reach out to the masses and the
younger population through social media. Some might even say
Obama won the election because
he was promoted over social media. Finally, the recession of
2007 supported the quantitative
data found from 2007 to 2009. According to the U.S.
Department of Treasury (2012), 8.8 million
jobs were lost due to the recession. In 2007, my father went
through a dry season of work. He
was working as an electrical engineer and work was scarce
during that time. Although we did not
lose a house, and my father remained employed, times were still
a bit tough.
Personal recollections, history, and quantitative data are not
the same, however could be
interconnected at times. Ecological or natural disasters,
political violence, poverty, or
unemployment might affect individuals personally in the world,
but it also might not. For
example, those whom live in the exact neighborhoods that the
massive natural disasters occur in
will be directly affected. On the other hand, those whom lived
in other parts of the world, may
only see it as a tragedy in history and could not connect any
personal hardship to the natural
disaster. Another example would be the 2007 recession. During
the recession, I had many friends
whose parents lost their jobs, and even knew a few neighbors
whom lost their homes. It appeared
as though everything slowed down financially for a while.
However, I was not as affected by the
recession, because I was used to financial instability. My
father’s free-lance career often had
times where money was scarce. I remember in 2004, my family
had a Christmas where my dad
could only afford to give my brother and I one candy bar each
and a picture frame with a photo
of the family in it. My brother and I were not foreign to
financial hardship, and we were aware of
dry seasons. Therefore, when the recession hit and my father
faced financial insecurity, we just
saw it as any other season when we had a little less to go
around. We never took it personally,
and only grew into more grateful individuals because of it.

  • 5. Shelbie Inboden Week 5 Signature Assignment LBSU 304- Professor Brouillette Brandman University 10/12/18 History’s Impact Historical information which I gathered, greatly transformed my opinion towards the relation of one’s personal situation and historical events of the era in which we are living. In 1992 I was born in Arizona. I developed strong bonding with my mother as she was a single mother and she was quite good in horse riding and conducting riding lessons for children and adults. We often used to go for family outings riding the horses on the trails to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Arizona. Growing up as a child we had a really un stable home and things were always all over the place as far as men in and out of the home, different homes and my mother’s health. I remember when the world trade centers were attacked. This created a sort of uncertainty and caused a total damage of about $23 billion and $37 billion. We moved and got some land in Arizona so my Mother could expand her business in child entertainment. We had a portable pony ring and petting zoo and fun small carnival games. Also, at that time we had a curve ball hit us and I was diagnosed with a small cancerous tumor inside my mouth. In the era of Bill Clinton, the economy of USA remained well and there was not any big political issue except the rumors and hiring of his scandal. In 2000 George W. Bush was elected as the new president of United States. And a sudden change in USA policies emerged after the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists on 11 September. Tight Transport Security Administration was established in November 2001. Through investigation lead to the common belief that the September 11 attack was planned by Osama bin Laden. So, for
  • 6. the search of Osama bin Laden and his group, United States attacked Afghanistan along with NATO. In 2003 United States also invaded Iraq and I remember just sitting in my school classroom in fourth grade in fear and shock and not knowing what was going to happen. Bush was highly criticized and as a result, Barack Obama was elected as President in 2008. To lighten the impact of worst recession of Bush era, African- American President passed reforms on health care and banking. In 2011, Iraq and America combat were over, and I had just graduated high school. I wanted to be apart of the fight for our country, so I joined the army in late 2010 but left for basic in January 2011. Obama policies were effective enough and lower the rate of unemployment below 7.8%. In 2013, Barack Obama was elected as president second time. Obama passed number of bills to stabilize the economy, agreed on oil drilling handled Ebola Virus outbreak, in which my husband helped fight, launched “Star Wars” satellite program and initiated Student Debt relief program. I was active duty at this time and had always wanted to start school but was just not in place yet to do that with a deployed husband and two very young babies. Obama started a policy regarding financial aid and student loans. His Student Aid Bill helped a lot to solve the student debt problems and facilitated a lot of students in paying school loans faster. Clinton received huge support from college graduates (52%- 43%) by 9-point margin, while Trump was supported by non- college goers (52% - 44 %). Regardless of campaign efforts, Donald Trump became the President of the United States (Krugman, 2016). Trump policies were received as controversial one; he ordered about the tight monitoring of security concerns and suspended the entry of people belonging to Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya. I was quite curious regarding the Trump policies related to education and health. Mostly because I was about to be getting out of the military in 2016 and this would obviously be important for me to know and be aware of how that may affect me or my family. Fortunately
  • 7. having Tri Care for health coverage, we were not really affected. This is all about my personal recollection and its relation to history. It provides me deep insight that both are interlinked to each other. History is related to study of past events and recollection is also about the remembrance of your life past events. Both are strongly interlinked to one another. It was a true joy being able to go back and remember the events that happened in my life. Some things brought smiles and others may have brought a tear or two. But also being able to compare what was going on in my personal life at the time, especially in my younger years, seeing what was going on in the big picture of the world as a whole. For example, the September 11 terrorist attacks, where four passenger airliners were hijacked and crashed on the World Trade Center and other locations in the United States. As a result, we now have TSA pat-downs, quantity-based liquid bans, and passengers are required to remove their shoes for X- ray scanning. When I fly I get frustrated because of the long lines and how we have to take off our shoes and get searched. Events will continue to occur every
  • 14. day and those events will continue to change our lives and the way we live. The historical information I researched changed my perspective on some events of my life. Certain events that occurred changed and affected my everyday life without me even noticing until now. The 2012 election between President Obama and Mitt Romney election result was an event that would affect my life for a long time. In 2012, I returned back to school, and I depended on Financial Aid and school loans to pay for my studies. When President Obama won the election, I was excited and happy because he supported financial aid and school loans for students that could not afford to attend school. In 2015 president Obama created the Student Aid Bill of Rights to help take action on the student debt problem, and provide borrowers with more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airliner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_hijacking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center_(1973–2001) rights and protections. According to the Student Debt Relief website the current average
  • 15. borrowers student loan debt at $28,400, and the average default rate at nearly 14%. This election helped me with school because more financial programs were available for me to use. The Student Debt Relief impacted my life because it helped me pay my school loans faster. In addition, working in special education, hygiene is a big priority. In special education students take longer learning hygiene skills. Special needs students need to be reminded not to sneeze all over, have their hands in their mouth, touch different areas of their bodies, and sometimes have trouble going to the restroom. When I first started working with special need students the Ebola virus began spreading and was big news. Nobody had any knowledge of what the Ebola Virus was, and how it was spreading and killing people. We would receive all of the information from the news. The news anchors reported that the virus was easy to spread and people were dying because they were getting affected. The news was that the virus was spreading in the United States and this caused panic around the country. I remember schools and teachers were scared.
  • 16. We were asked to sanitize the classroom and report everything because we were scared of getting sick. The Ebola outbreak spread rapidly and became the deadliest occurrence of the disease since its discovery in 1976. A total number of reported cases is about 28,637 that were affected by the Ebola virus according to The World Health Organization. Furthermore, the 2016 presidential election is probably the most important event that will affect my life. In 2016 Donald Trump became the President of the United States. Presidents trump policies are very controversial. Trump winning will affect me and my education. In 2015, I decided to transfer school to receive my Bachelor degree. Donald Trump winning can affect my financial aid assistance because he plans of cutting funding. According to Alec Tyson and Shiva Maniam authors of “Behind Trump’s victory: Divisions by race, gender, education” http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/11/13/average- student-loan-debt-hits-30-000 http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/11/13/average- student-loan-debt-hits-30-000 http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/default-rates-continue- rise-federal-student-loans
  • 17. College graduates backed Clinton by a 9-point margin (52%- 43%), while those without a college degree backed Trump 52%-44%. This statistic shows how college graduates were looking for a more stable vision from a president that supported current students and financial help for students. The relationship between personal recollection, history, and quantitative data is the act of re-collecting. Recollection represents recalling to mind; remembrance. History is the branch of knowledge dealing with past events, and quantitative data means information that can be measured and written down with numbers. In order to get quantitative data, we need a historic event. We need an event to gather the data, and in order to gather information we need to recall the past event. Personal recollection, history, and quantitative data are all inter-related because you can’t reliably get the information from one without the other two.

  • 32. Instructions: This assignment combines your personal impressions during a particular time period in your life vis-à-vis broader historical events. For the most complete understanding of any historical period you need data, including quantitative sources of information. History and historiography require studying many sources of data. As the Association of American Colleges and Universities points out students should have the ability to make judgments and draw appropriate conclusions based on the quantitative analysis of data. Students should also have the ability to make and evaluate important assumptions in data analysis, and they should be able to express quantitative evidence in support of their arguments. In this case, you will enhance your historical awareness of a short period of time by availing yourself of readily available quantitative data to form a more detailed and possibly nuanced picture of a specific time period that is also personally important to you. There are 4 steps to completing this assignment, noted below. The first three steps are crucial for preparation, and the fourth step details the reflection you will
  • 33. submit. Step 1: Keeping your readings and video clips in mind, create a timeline that includes four situations, related to jobs, your profession, education, or any other important events in your life that you are comfortable sharing with your reader. List each situation or event and roughly note the year or range, such as 2006 to 2009. Then match your personal history with important historical events occurring during that same time period. Identify whether or not there is a relationship between the historical events and your personal situations and/or life events. Your timeline is necessary for this assignment, and you will submit it along with your reflection. Below Step 3, you will see an example for setting up your timeline. Step 2: After creating the personal timeline, list and describe some of the corresponding historical events that occurred during the same time period. In other words, research the time period that coincides with each of the four personal events, and mention some of the important historical occurrences, in particular those you had not considered, were not aware of, or had simply forgotten. Your list will help you prepare to write your reflection.
  • 34. Step 3: Go to a research website such as PewResearchCenter website (http://www.pewresearch.org/data/ and http://www.people-press.org/datasets/2008/) or a research site of your choosing to seek quantitative data that tracks how people rated three key indicators, for example, Personal Finances, Economic Conditions, or even Social Networking Use and track the data that corresponds with your timeline. Once you have completed Steps 1-3, you will be able to complete the timeline. Please use a table such as the one below. Personal/Historical Timeline https://brandman.blackboard.com/webapps/assignment/uploadAs signment?content_id=_7450530_1&course_id=_176699_1&assi gn_group_id=&mode=cpview http://www.pewresearch.org/data/ http://www.people-press.org/datasets/2008/ 2006 to 2009 Personal Situations/Events (Job Promotion, Marriage, Birth of a Child, Winning the Lotto, any important or life-changing event) 2006 to 2009 Important Historical Events (Elections, War, Coronations, Assassinations, Domestic

For example, an increase in home buying is used as an indication of growing economic strength and confidence; a decrease in voter turnout is used as an indication of political dissatisfaction. Step 4 (Reflection based on timeline information): In a minimum of 750 words, write an essay that reflects on changes your perspective on some of the personal situations/events in your life, and, if so, how? and interpret the data, offers
  • 36. evidence to support or differ with your personal recollections, assumptions, impressions, and personal situation for the time period you selected in the timeline. Are the key indicators you selected very different today from the time period you researched? How so? personal recollection, history, and quantitative data? Are personal recollections, history, and quantitative data the same thing and are they the same thing as facts? Are there limits to what the data captures? Be sure to provide references for the historical sources you researched and for the research site or sites you consult. Please review the rubric for detailed expectations of your final submission. Save your timeline and reflection as one document. Save your writing assignment as a doc or rtf with your name and the assignment name in the Signature Assignment file, using Last Name_Assignment. I was essentially born into the residue of what apartheid had left behind. I had a fairly satisfying childhood all throughout the 90’s, due to the outstanding care received from my parents. However, I also spent my 90’s in fear, and experienced a lot of hate as a white female, because of the division, segregation, and hatred within the country at that time. The hatred lead to an increase in crime. The revolver my mother slept with under her pillow at night, was the same revolver I learned how to use at the age of 6 “in case of emergencies.” After some research on unemployment in South Africa during the 1990’s and 2000’s, I found that the unemployment rate was 31.5% in 1994 according to A. Check (2017), and Forbes rated South Africa the #1 highest unemployed country in 2000 (M. Patton, 2015). I believe that most of the crime during that

When unemployment strikes for such a long period of time, people would do the unthinkable out of desperation to provide for their families’ needs. The quantitative data of the TSA at the airport supported my personal situation during the time my family and I moved to the United States from South Africa in December 2001, only three months after the terrorist attack. According to C. & T. (n.d.) Al-Qaeda, Islamic terrorist group, coordinated that two planes crash into the north and south tower of the world trade center, and the third plane into the pentagon. This attack left 2,996 people dead, and over 6,000 injured. The entire move was exciting as a 12-year-old, but also very stressful at the airport because of the increase in security. For example, Transport Security Administration was only established in November 2001 due to the terrorist attack that had taken place, and sky marshals increased from fewer than 100 to more than several thousand by 2004 (IATA, 2016). At that time, I specifically

On the other hand, my parent’s divorce had no connection to the natural disasters faced in 2005, nor did the quantitative data have any correlation. According to D.C. Beckwith (2005), in 2005, 600,000 jobs were eliminated, the shipping traffic disrupted, refining shut down, and gasoline prices raised to $3 per gallon nationwide due to Hurricane Katrina. My family was not directly affected because we were based in California in 2005, and nowhere near the Bahamas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, or Alabama at the time of the hurricane. The data even suggests that 2005 was a banner year for the U.S economy after the natural disasters. Over 2 million new jobs were created, and caused the unemployment rate to fall from 5.4% to 4.9% (D.C. Beckwith, 2005). As much as I wish I could have blamed my parent’s divorce on the economy or natural disasters at the time, it was purely an outside decision based upon the struggles within the marriage. A few key
  • 46. indicators from 2005 through 2010 include the rise of social media. Social media started taking the world by storm, rapidly expanding each year. According to Graves (n.d.), in 2005, Facebook went from The Facebook where it was only available to college students, to Facebook when it became available to everyone. That same year YouTube was invented, allowing individuals to share videos worldwide. In 2006, Twitter was introduced, and in 2007, according to R. Ritchie (2017), the iPhone was invented. In 2010, social media users worldwide increased from .97 billion users in 2010, to 2.62 billion in 2017 (Statista, n.d.). The invention of the iPhone and social media played a big role in my senior year of high school and the years to follow. I have remained friends with the individuals I graduated with through social media. It has helped us remain in contact and stay updated on one another’s lives. Social media also played a large role in the election of Barack Obama. For example, according to J. Eilperin (2015) the head of the White House Office of Public Engagement, Paulette Aniskoff, “had journeyed from Washington

Some might even say Obama won the election because he was promoted over social media. Finally, the recession of 2007 supported the quantitative data found from 2007 to 2009. According to the U.S. Department of Treasury (2012), 8.8 million jobs were lost due to the recession. In 2007, my father went through a dry season of work. He was working as an electrical engineer and work was scarce during that time. Although we did not lose a house, and my father remained employed, times were still a bit tough. Personal recollections, history, and quantitative data are not the same, however could be interconnected at times. Ecological or natural disasters, political violence, poverty, or unemployment might affect individuals personally in the world,
  • 48. but it also might not. For example, those whom live in the exact neighborhoods that the massive natural disasters occur in will be directly affected. On the other hand, those whom lived in other parts of the world, may only see it as a tragedy in history and could not connect any personal hardship to the natural disaster. Another example would be the 2007 recession. During the recession, I had many friends whose parents lost their jobs, and even knew a few neighbors whom lost their homes. It appeared as though everything slowed down financially for a while. However, I was not as affected by the recession, because I was used to financial instability. My father’s free-lance career often had times where money was scarce. I remember in 2004, my family had a Christmas where my dad could only afford to give my brother and I one candy bar each and a picture frame with a photo of the family in it. My brother and I were not foreign to financial hardship, and we were aware of dry seasons. Therefore, when the recession hit and my father faced financial insecurity, we just saw it as any other season when we had a little less to go
