Those Ugly Emotions Responding to them to them in a Biblical way,
THERE IS HOPE 1Cor. 10:13 “No temptation. But that which is common to man BUT God is ABLE and will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able But with the temptation will provide a way of escape , that you will be able to endure it.”
BUT FIRST WE HAVE TO TRUST GOD, HIS SOVERIEGNTY, AND TRUST HIS WORD .
The Beginning: What Happened. Genesis 1:31 “God saw everything that He made and behold it was GOOD” Gen.1:26-30 Describes a life of earthly BLISS. Gen 2:17 Eve exchanged God’s Truth for Satan’s lie (Genesis 3:4-5).
Genesis 3:6 ‘ good for food’--- physically appealing/nutritional value “maybe God was over restrictive; preventing me from having all that life has to offer” ‘ a delight to the eyes” ---aesthetic and emotional value. “I feel good just looking at this fruit’ Desirable “to make one wise”. ---intellectual value. ‘This could make me wise like God’ (Gen 3:5)
THE PROBLEM. God’s Command no longer dictated what was right and wrong in her life. What was Authoritative now became optional What was Definite now turned into other alternatives, multiple choice Remember: TRUTH DOES NOT ORIGINATE FROM HUMANS BUT FROM GOD
Why it that our MINDS and our THOUGHTS, and our BELIEFS - apart from God -can’t be trusted and NEEDS TO BE REALIGNED To GOD’S WORD?
RESULT: What happened to our minds. Romans 1:28 ‘debased” 2.Cor. 3:14 ‘hardened” 2cor. 4:4 “blinded” Eph. 4:17 ‘futility’ Eph.4:18 ‘darkened” Col 1:21 “hostile” Col 2:4 “deluded” Col. 2:8 “deceived” Col. 28 “sensuous” I Tim. 6:” “depraved’ 2 Tim. 3:8 “corrupted” Titus. 1:15 “defiled !
New disease or Old Nature “ Shared psychotic disorder” “ Addictions” and ‘compulsive disorders” Do not be around an sinful person lest you learn his ways –Proverbs 22:24-25, 12:26 “ Keep me from presumptuous sins ; Let them nor rule over me” Psalm 19:13
New Disease or Old Nature (Dis-Ease) “ Severe Anxiety Disorder” “ Bipolar” “ Severe Depression” David experience depression, anxiety, and other psychological symptoms-as a result of sin with Bathsheba “My iniquities …weigh too much for me” Psalm 38:4 Cain’s sinful behavior led to depression [Gen. 4:5-7]. He didn’t have a disease
Treatment or Sanctification For anger: ‘Christian’ Counseling where he or she listens to you (Rogerian not Biblical) as you repeat your problems. Behavior Modification techniques: count to 10, use ‘I’ messages, Alter facial expressions, Medication: mood stabilizers like Lithium, Tegretol, Divalproex For anger: (SANTIFICATION ) Biblical Behavior Modification Technique “ Be angry, and do not sin . Meditate within your heart on your bed and be still . Offer the sacrifices of righteousness and put your trust in the Lord ” Psalm 4:4,5 Ps. 18:7 God’s Word is “PERFECT…SURE”
Ephesians 5:14-20 “ Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead and Christ shall (PROMISE-HOPE, certainty) give thee light (the WORD, understanding). See than that you walk (HABIT) carefully, not as fools, but as wise. Redeeming the time, (ACT NOW/TODAY!) because the days are evil (DON’T LET THE CULTURE INFLUENCE YOU); wherefore be ye not unwise, (YOKED) but understanding what the will of the Lord is (GOD’S WAY). VS.14-17
I Tim 4:7 “ Discipline thyself; exercise thyself unto godliness. WE HAVE TO TRAIN OUR MINDS TO THINK GOD’S WAY, TRAIN OUR WILLS TO CONFORM TO GOD’S WILL, TRAIN OUR BODIES/FLESH TO BE SUBJECT TO OUR SPIRIT MAN---IT’S CALLED……
H A B I T Colossians 1:28 “ We proclaim him so that we can make every man complete in Christ to be more like Jesus. :29..tells us how to do to…for this cause we labor and strife…. flee (something to do) –fornication… according to His power that works mightily in me. [striving and labor according to the word of God… HIS HOLY SPIRIT enables you… … . TO BRING ABOUT HEART CHANGE … THAT IS THE OBJECT OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING .
Treatment/ “Recovery”
Morality is not the goal; honoring and pleasing God (godliness) is the goal. (Remember the Pharisees were very moral people). Whatever works- work; doesn’t mean it pleases God. Working for “A perfect marriage” is unbiblical. Even God’s perfect match failed. (Robin Hood was a hero doing a great job stealing from the rich to give to the poor; but he was still a thief)
BIBLICAL SANTIFICATION UNRIGHTEOUS OLD HABIT TO RIGHTEOUS NEW HABIT All people sin differently; all people sin habitually. You can always control a bad habit…especially when you can REPLACE it with a NEW GOOD HABIT. Ephesians 4: 1 “walk (habitual) worthy of the vocation..”,. “forsake not the assembling of your selves …as is the HABIT of some”. Going to church is HABIT…we need to cultivate good habit.
IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU FEELINGS!!!! It’s about what you do despite how you feel.
Unbiblical Philosophy “ Man is inherently good…and made for goodness” Archbishop Desmond Tutu THEREFORE THESE (bad things, and bad feelings inside us) THINGS ARE A RESULT OF SICKNESS…. IF it’s a sickness than “It” (bad feelings) needs A CURE…
No sin Sick people need recovery/a cure Guilt means “low self esteem" and is discouraged It’s not about repentance; it 12 steps Healthy self image Therapy and drugs No need for Jesus Sinners need Jesus Christ We ARE guilty (scripture) Repentance Salvation Discipline and discipleship This Philosophy Compromises THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST World’s view vs. Biblical View

Practice Do we have to sin? Romans 6:6,7,14 Describe what the ‘old self’ like? Ephesians 4:24 What is the New self like? Eph 4:24 What are we to PUT ON and PUT OFF? Col 3:9(put off) Col 3:10 (put on) This NEW SELF is to be renewed. How?(Col 3:10)
UGLY EMOTION #1 DEPRESSION
What is the main Biblical Causes of “Depression” ? (NO SUCH WORD IN THE SCRIPTURE) Sin. Psalm 32 “ I acknowledge my sin to You and my iniquity I did not hide. (5) Scholars agree it was his sin with Bathsheba from verse 3 (when I kept silent about my sin my body waste away)
Psalm 32 SIN PUT OFF (Automatic Natural) He responded with denial, repression of his guilt, physically wasting away (could be from loss of appetite), groaning. PUT ON (Godly Righteous): repentance 32:5 “I will confess my sins before the Lord”
Psalm 6, Psalm 13 Other people-your enemies . PUT OFF Automatic response: Pinning away, bones and soul greatly dismayed (Ps 6:2,3), tired of continual sighing, excessive crying day and night, body even to the point of looking old (6,7),sorrow in my heart all day’, sleeping excessively (Ps 13:3) PUT ON Godly Purposeful Response: Trust in God’s loving-kindness, rejoice in His salvation, sing to the Lord. (5,6), Prayer believing, having faith in God that He hears your supplication and that it is your enemies that will be doing the crying one day (6:9,10)
FEAR Ps:56 Hebrew language use words for fear and other emotions which refer to parts of the body like spleen or ‘guts” Feelings come from belief that there is danger Pounding heart, muscular tension easily irritated or angry, dryness of mouth, presparation, butterflies. SAME AS when one is going on stage or standing in front of people BUT there is NO DANGER THERE.
I John 4:18 READ! “ Perfect love cast out fear” Mother’s fear of snake can turn that snake in dinner if that snake threatens her baby. Father’s fear of height can turn him into a champion and defender who climb the highest heights to rescue his child from a burning building
I JH 4:18 “ DO NOT FEAR”. NOT a suggestion; it’s a COMMAND!! Jesus felt sorrow and stress in the Garden of Gethsemane, but NEVER fear because he had perfect TRUST and LOVE for His Father. EVEN IN LIGHT OF REAL DANGER (Ps 56:1 “man would swallow me up”. Also vs:1,2,5,6,7,
Put On Fear Put Off Ps 55 give some of fears feelings Deathly afraid (4) (not “paranoia”) Fearfulness, trembling and feelings of horror(5) (not schizophrenia) Restless, loudly groaning, (2) (not compulsive) Desire to run and hide (6) Ps 56 Trust (3,9,11,13) Praise His word (4,10,) Praise God (12 Make the choice “I WILL not fear” (4,11) Get the right perspective “what can flesh do to me”(4) Cry out to God (8)
Emotions Biblical terms Fearfulness fearfulness
FEELINGS of displeasure at events or behavior of others that cause tension and often an attitude of hostility towards the offender Anger is not so much the problem as what we do with it. Sinful anger problems are involved in 90% of all counseling issues. ANGER
Good Anger Anger can be a good thing, it helps you muster up courage and master fear to overcome and enemy or expose injustice or corruption. And God is expresses anger. (Rms. 1:18, Duet 9:19, I kings 16:13, Mark 3:5)
Bad Anger Anger is wrong when it: leads to harm, desires to see one get their ‘come-up-pense’, (Matt 5, 21-22) Leads to loss of self control—usually in the home where we are safe from repercussions that will cost us shame, embarrassment, respect, position, etc. (Prov. 29: 11, 20, 22) A wise checks his anger, stops himself from sinning more than he already has.
Bad Anger Cont’d It is ‘NATURAL’ because our fallen nature is depraved . Gal. 5:19-20 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, …hatred, discord, …. Fits of rage, …dissensions, ..” (God’s anger is considerate, thoughtful, and purposeful) Directed against God’s will, nursed, and not overcome. Is.45:24 Results from a lifestyle of being around angry people. Prov. 22: 24-25 Results from being self righteous (like Jonah) Jonah 4:1-4
Put Off Anger Put On James 1:19-20 Being quick and hasty to: “ Give them a piece of your mind” ‘ speak your piece’ ‘ tell it like it is’ ‘ get if off your chest’ ‘ dance with the devil’ Pouting, glaring, stomping, and pretty much the ‘attiTUDE’ Ps. 37:8 reframe/cease (STOP) from anger, turn away from wrath Hope in the Lord(9)NASB Wait on the Lord (9)KJV SHUT YOUR MOUTH James 1:19-20 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God”
More PUT ONs Eph. 4:31 “Get rid of all bitterness rage and anger Prov. 29:11 “A fool gives vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control”. (so much for the “let it all out” adage, AND the ‘I can’t help it’ excuse) SELF CONTROL – A fruit of the Holy Spirit. YES YOU CAN HELP IT!!!
Other Ugly Emotions GUILT: Psalm 51:1-9 Not popular in the world and IN THE CHURCH. With guilt, we feel bad, like a failure, condemned, worthless, etc. WHAT’S WRONG WITH THAT??
Guilt Cont’d The Unbiblical Belief Guilt means Low Self Esteem (a bad thing?) Guilt is a conditioned response. Self-knowledge and Self-acknowledgement is the cure. (Freud) Behaviorists say guilt comes from failure to reach our own high standard of behavior and also when our behavior hurt other. Behave in a way as not to hurt others so we will not feel guilty.
GUILT…A good thing If there is no guilt, Christ died in vain He took away our Guilt and shame James 2:8 “ …and yet offend in one point he is guilty of all”. Rms. 3:19 “all the world may be guilty before God”
Guilt and The Biblical Belief of Self Esteem . Phil 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery ot be equal with God, but mad Himself of no reputationtaking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men, And being found in appearnace as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross . THEREFORE..GOD HIGHLY EXALTED HIM….”
Self esteem Cont’d For that which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of the Lord (Luke 16:15) Re: Moses, and other Giant in the Faith according to Heb. 11“…esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches better than the wealth of Egypt----”(26) and of SELF--- Humble himself as a little Child Matt.18:4,23:12
Put One We should hold the cause of Guilt in the mirror OF SCRIPTURE to determine if what we are concern about is real guilt. Rms. 8:1 “..no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus..” Rms. 1:7-9 “..if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
Other Ugly Feelings Hatred (who? Me? Hate?) Envy Jealousy Grief
JOY is the answer.
