PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a dedicated, hardworking and motivated BTEC student studying Games Design at Salford City
College. I want to learn how games are made and how to program my own games in the future. I
have been interested in this subject since I began to play games and being a creative person I
think I would make a very good game developer.
From all the time I have spent playing computer games, I have always wanted to know how they
were made and what the process is of making a computer game. For a long time I have wanted to
use a lot of features from game that I have played to make my own games, I have had many
different and interesting ideas.
My interest for games design stated at a young age as I use to play a board game called War
Hammer 40K, after playing that game I thought it would be a good idea to make my own board
game. Using small 1 72 scale World War 2 figures I bought and painted myself. I built boards
for them to play on. The first iteration of the game was using a drawn out grid method of
measuring distance and everything being shown on "Stat Cards" which showed the distance they
can move, shoot, health points, damage given, and what armour they had. The rules for the game,
I tried to keep simplistic, but it wasn't how I wanted it to be played. Much contemplation and
testing I came up with an idea of having a "Simple" rule system and a "Complex" rules system
which contained cover, vehicles and more realistic rules. Afterwards I spent a long time
creating a diorama that the game could be played on, I didn't want to ruin it by putting a
grid on it. After thinking of methods to make the game playable without ruining my diorama I
decided to use a tape measure to mark the distances in inches. I thought the game was quite
well balanced with no team being more powerful than the other, even though I only had 2 teams
(German and British) I think the game was a fun game to play.
I first got in to gaming via Xbox live, after that day I began to play games online and have
been doing so ever since. In 2011 I bought my first PC for gaming on, it wasn't the best.
After getting in to PC gaming I decided to get a high spec gaming PC so that I could play
every game on it, the first being my favorite game, battlefield.
During my time in high school I did an ICT course, towards the end we have made a game using
Scratch. While I was doing the project I really enjoyed doing the programming side of it and
figuring out what I need to use and how it had to be done. After i completed that course and
finishing high school I thought I'd look in to real programming, although I found it very
difficult I began to learn a couple thing about it and decide that I wanted to do programming
in my future. While I was doing a Games Design course in college we covered programming but
what everything meant. However, to take my interest further I watched a stream where someone
was doing a 7 day games challenge, while I was watching the stream I remembered how much I
enjoyed doing programming in high school and decided to learn programming from the internet. I
watch tutorials as much as I can.
During my college course we many different things such as game concept art, 3D modelling and
much more. My favourite part besides the programming was the 3D modelling and animating. I
didn't enjoy the art side of the course that much, personally I didn't like my drawing's and
could never get it to look how I wanted it to look, although my skills have improved over the
time.
I look forward to seeing you and hope to study at your university, and I feel confident that
this Computer Games Technology course is the right one for me because i am very interested and
would love to learn how to program games.
