Musician Suicide
Musician Suicide
Ross A. Hudson
Bryant University
Suicide is an ongoing issue is society today. Every day, individuals take their own lives when the struggles of life become too much as well as a
number of other reasons. But while to the general public suicide is a big enough problem, it seems to be only a bigger problem when it comes to
musicians and other celebrities. one of the most famous cases happened 20 years ago when lead singer of Nirvana Kurt Cobain took his own life,
leaving many fans and psychologists wondering why. It's a phenomenon that has many questioning if there is a positive correlation between being a
musicians and being prone to committing suicide as well as the reasons why. In Sheila M. Eldred's article "Why Are... Show more content on

It makes sense, those suffering from major depression often have prolonged periods of sadness, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, as well
as social withdrawal and trouble creating ideas. While all these symptoms point to someone who is definitely at risk of suicide, one may wonder why
they would show up in a well off and popular musicians when modern psychology points to the poor as being the most susceptible to depression.
Contrary to popular belief, while some musicians hit it big and make millions off their music, the vast majority of them don't. they are left to struggle
through life trying to find gigs to make enough money to pay the rent. without any one listening or caring about their music, these musicians can start
feeling worthless and start losing hope. when this depression becomes so severe they may start having trouble making new music because of the
cognitive sluggishness depression brings about creating a vicious cycle of depression that some may see only one outcome to.
While major depression might explain most of the musician suicides, but what about the ones that occur with a successful musician. Kurt Cobain, the
main example from Eldred's article, was fairly a successful and popular musician with his band Nirvana at the time of his death. Dr. Moutiers theory
that the perfectionist nature of being a musician and constantly being under the spotlight of the public eye could lead someone

Count Basie Musician
When white Americans think of jazz musicians we think new Orleans, sex, drugs, alcohol. Well this is not always the case. Count Basie was from
New Jersey and played the piano not the saxophone. He went to New York for his big break in jazz got stranded in Kansas City and became one of the
most famous jazz musicians of all time. He led us from big band to bebop. He did not always want to play the piano; he also had a love for drums.
Lady's and Gentlemen please give a warm welcome for The King William Count
Basie.
Lillian and Harvey were blessed with a baby boy on August 21, 1904 in Red Bank
New Jersey. They named their son, William James Basie (some sources say his middle name is Allen). James, William's older brother, died when he
was a small child. His musical talent came honestly. His father was a mellophonist and his mother was a pianist.
Lillian was a laundress and his father was a coachman and a caretaker. As a child William did not always like the piano. When he was a small boy
he liked the drums, his father even bought him a trap set to practice on. When he decided to take up the piano, his mother would pay 25 cents for a
lady to teach William to play the piano. In addition to his parents working William also worked so he could watch silent films free. Well one day the
piano accompanist did not show up so Basie took his place, needless to say he was invited back that evening to play again.
After dropping out of high school in his Junior year, he moved to New York

The Gap Between Vocal And Instrumental Instruction
Throughout the beginning of music education, there has been a divide. A separation between the lands of vocalists and instrumentalists existed and
still exists today. While it isn't a conscience happening at all times, it can divide a music program into two separate entities. Figuring out how the two
areas can coincide will ultimately get music educators on the right tracks for building an excelling program. When students feel that they can be in both
and feel wanted in each area and not feel tension between the directors and the music choices, they can thrive. Removing the gap between vocal and
instrumental instruction can be done by researching alike techniques and implementing the coinciding department into either program.

With woodwind players, tone can be changed by simply changing the space in the throat and mouth. The same can be said of brass players, but one
other aspect lies in the amount of space between the teeth. If enough space between the teeth is not present, especially with young brass players, an
unpleasant buzzing sound will occur, once again hindering a beautiful tone. The directors of vocalists push and push for more space in the mouth and
throat, especially with young singers that want to sound like the next greatest pop artist. The music performed in the context of concerts and contests at
the high school and middle school level, however, need just the opposite.
The last way technique overlaps, is in the use of warmups, and technical exercises. Instrumentalists use these on a reoccurring basis for warmups
before rehearsal. Scales are learned at a brisk tempo for auditions and at the collegiate level, technique books and extended technique exercises are
studied. These are used to not only warm up air, but to also warm up the fingers and gain dexterity. For vocalists, similar processes occur. Before
rehearsing, vocalists use warmups; most of which are based on scales, arpeggios and other theory points. They are used to warm up the voice, and get
performers aware of their breathing and voice flexibility. All of these are extremely similar to their voice counterparts. Some

Music Streaming Services Case Study
The Competing Music Streaming Services: SoundCloud and Spotify
Humans experience a "feel good" sensation when listening to enjoyable songs, such as their personal favorites. What causes these "feel good" feelings?
Leading brain specialists today have determined the cause to be the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine (Zatorre). Because of recent
advancements in the music industry, people are able to listen to any they would like, anytimeп‚ѕessentially acquiring their music fix.
Music enthusiasts now use streaming services like Pandora, Google Play Music, iHeart
Radio, and Beats Music. Without a doubt, SoundCloud and Spotify are today's best two choices of streaming services. Although they may appear

Many famous music artists of today have SoundCloud to thank, like the recent prominent rapper Willie Maxwell II, known professionally as "Fetty
Wap." It was April of 2014 when Maxwell II uploaded the track "Trap Queen," which quickly became the anthem of the summer (John). By the end of
summer, "Trap Queen" had reached eleven million plays on SoundCloud, which led to a record deal with 300 Entertainment
(Gruger). In addition to Maxwell II, SoundCloud also helped music artists like electronic dance musician Skrillex, hip–hop rapper Post Malone, and
house musician Kygo.
In contrast, Spotify's direction is to provide its listeners with songs for everyone of life's moment. Spotify accomplishes this goal by creating playlists
for specific genres and moods. For example, such playlists include Country, R&B, Rock, Holidays, Good
Vibes, Mood Booster, Romance, Workout, and Focus. In addition, Spotify's goal is also to allow its users to access Spotify from anywhere through the
use of mediums like
Davidson 2 computers, smart phones, tablets, home entertainment systems, cars, gaming consoles, and such.
Being strikingly different from SoundCloud, the music selection of Spotify is of the already famous musicians of the industry. Therefore, Spotify helps
broadcast and promote the 'already' well–known music artists.
Secondly, SoundCloud's musical focus is the original–genuine songs of the up and

connecting with the words that are written is what's important and it's not all about just playing the notes that are right in front of him. This seemed to
be a big step in his music career and I'm sure it helped to open his mind up to new ideas and new ways of playing such as incorporating improvisation
into his music and making the music his own. In addition, he learned what it was like to be in a big band and follow along with other musicians in
the band such as Dizzy. By watching the other members and how they played, he learned how important it is to have a good connection with band
members and be able to follow along with the different cues and physical movements that Dizzy gave. For example, Lateef explained how the

much money and not nearly enough to fully support his family of four. He was introduced to the blues style while working at some of these clubs and
he enjoyed being able to meet new people. Since he knew that he wasn't making enough money, he even got a job at a real estate office where he
had to not only take course but also pass a real estate exam to keep the job. Lateef was very busy during this time of his life but it didn't stop him
from adding to his music career. On top of playing the saxophone, he also decided to try out of the flute and take classes at a local school to enhance
his ability at playing this new instrument. Unfortunately, his wife became very ill and he was left with both of his sons but he did a great job taking

How Authentic Images Of Artists Are Within The Music Industry
1.Discussion
Intro:
The following discussion will aim to answer the question of how authentic the images of artists are within the music industry. The question stemmed
from research about identity work, in particular within the creative industries. Artists are faced with a lot of identity struggles and tensions which a lot
of creative people encounter as well. The main prevailing issue or tension creative people constantly encounter that is unresolved is creativity versus
commerce. This idea describes the way in which the process of creativity is being overshadowed and ignored. Art for art's sake is no longer ax
powerful term as it once was as the capital gain of creativity has taken over. A great example of this happening is related tomusic artists. Most if not all
music artists within the industry are exploited and taken advantage of by recording companies due to contracts. The company owns almost every
aspect about an artist including their image when under some type of recording contract. This means the artists image may be in fact be inauthentic and
this in turn is the main point of research for this discussion. Points about the tensions artists face and if these tensions ever get resolved will also be
raised throughout the discussion as well.
Authenticity of an artist's image
The main point to be explored within this presentation is how authentic a music artist's image or identity really is. A key piece of research to look into

What Is A Musician?
10/10/14
This weeks musicianship lecture with Dr. John Williams brought an interesting question to light: 'what is a musician?'. It is not a point I had ever given
thought to before and my immediate answer to this question was 'someone who plays and performs for a living.' However, that answer seems restricted
and inadequate as I would by no means claim that those who play instruments simply for enjoyment are not musicians; even including, since the growth
of technology in music, those who don't play an instrument such as DJs or rappers. The dictionary definition is "a person who plays or composes
music, esp as a profession," but I would now say that anyone who can be said to be musically talented, or contributes to music in any way, ... Show

Genres like punk rock and disco were a bi–product of a changing generation who were breaking boundaries faster than any generation before. We
envision the 60's–80's as an era epitomised by outrageous fashion statements, blatant use of drink and drugs and a generally rebellious, reckless attitude
to life. I find myself linking this to films like The Boat that Rocked, which, whilst possibly not being completely accurate, seem to capture and portray
that restless, rebellious spirit very well.

This week the lecturer discussed the origin of polyphony and the word. Researching this further I came across a paper in which the author, Joseph
Jordania, argued that polyphony was not a development of monophony, but was, in fact, an ancient and important part of our evolution. I find this
fascinating, as I had always assumed that music and polyphonic singing were a bi–product of evolution – certainly not influencers of it.
Euphony, on the other hand, throws up the question: "if the words aren't clear how can the music relate to it's function?" This shows that evidently the
words rather than the music were important to the Catholic church, but does this mean that the musical side was then almost dispensable? What role
does the music play in the Catholic church?

May people who are reading our storey book of the stories behind our songs, will already know that our professionally journey started with Living
without you.
I was fortunate in 2014 to meet Scarlett Cole at my place of work in Manchester in the uk.
She would come to my work numerous times working the week and buy fresh produce for her and her family. I was greengrocer in a past life lol.
Come on there is nothing better than fresh vegetable and fruit.

This to me is so surreal and magical and is incomprehensible to even think about.
Recently I was given some advice from a person who mentors me in the music industry. They see me working 70hors a week to bring music and to
write this book and also how hard I work as background singer for other famous bands.
They say me down and said ' ' Enjoy the journey '. They described there journey and how because of striving for bigger and better things that they did
not enjoy the smallest of things that are so important.
He said enjoy it when someone comments on your song bad or good. Enjoy the feeling of hearing your song on the radio for the first time. Enjoy our
band members strengths and weaknesses. Enjoy the whole damn thing. Because if you dont I 'm a few years you would have forgotten everything you
set out to achieve because you had the eye on the prize.
I would like to time working in this storey to thank many people for there help in my journey.
Firstly

Essay on Music Censorship
Music Censorship
The tall, lanky fifteen–year–old ambled slowly up to the counter and tossed his music selection toward the clerk. The salesman began to ring the sale
up in his routine manner, but just then something caught his eye. It was a small black sticker on the corner of the CD. This sticker plainly read
"explicit lyrics." As the teenager fumbled through his pockets searching for a method of payment, the clerk gave him a questioning glance. "Could I
see some identification please?" The clerk's voice cut through the silence like a knife through butter. Immediately the boy's face went from something
of a blank stare to a frown. "I'm sorry this particular CD is not available to minors," the clerk apologetically stated. "Yeah... Show more content on

By removing the libretto of La Traviata Verde's opera has lost at least some of its impact or meaning. Though we can not be sure what this particular
libretto's content was, we can be sure that we have missed out on some of Giuseppe Verde's work of art.
The issue of censorship has been with us for centuries. Due to the argumentative nature of the human race, this issue will in all probability remain
with us for centuries to come. Radio broadcasters in the Nineteen Fifties regularly altered and removed certain lyrics that were determined too
offensive for listeners. " The Billie Holiday song 'Love for Sale' was banned outright by the ABC radio network in 1956 because of its prostitution
theme" (Volz 2). In other cases lyrics were changed in order to allow these hit songs some guaranteed air time. "ABC changed a line in the Cole
Porter tune 'I get a kick out of you' from ' I get a kick from cocaine' to ' I get perfume from Spain'"(2). Sure, these lines may well rhyme, but they
totally lack the artist's intended meaning. Cole Porter was deprived of a main point he was trying to get across. Once again the unjust act of censorship
has robbed the meaning of a song from millions.
In 1966 an Irish group named "Them" wrote, and sung, the top selling European song "Gloria." One line in this song, "she comes in my room" was
marked offensive by WLS, a radio station in Chicago. This song was so

When discussing the pop–industry today a general belief seems to form, that young musicians who grew up with either rich or famous parents
compose the majority of the industry. On the other hand, the alternative genres of music are typically made up of people who grew up in the
middle–class or lower class. Unfortunately their music never finds a market or receives play on the radio. That said, technical avenues still exist for the

music scene.
After touring the London singer–songwriter circuit for a year, Sheeran pulled together a small starting fanbase. However, after a year making next to
no money, he found himself on the streets of London. He wrote two notable songs about living on those streets. In one, "The City" (Sheeran), he recalls
the many of the aspects of living in London. During the song, he relates city life to country life, and how unnatural pavement feels. In the song
"Homeless" (Sheeran), Sheeran expresses life on the streets using quotes. While homeless, the singer–songwriter slept on a number of friends' couches
while trying to write music.
Ed Sheeran considered changing careers after struggling to make money and a period of couch surfing (Showbiz). " ' 'There came a point when I

cope with everyday functions and some have even overdosed and passed away using drugs to cope with depression. Being a music artist means you
have to deal with being criticized about almost everything you do. Some musicians have reached record sales of almost seventy–five million.
Nowadays sales can be through digital stores like Apple's iTunes. Soundscan and Billboard magazine are two of the most up–to–date figures for

The Expressivity Of Creativity : Music
The Expressivity of Creativity Musicians in this era release music nowadays that always seems to follow similar melodic patterns, making a great
amount of the music we listen to sound all too familiar. Listening to music is a way that people relax their soul; it takes them to a different place and
away from personal problems. Yet, there seems to be fewer and fewer artists that actually express their emotions through theirmusic, making it seem
impassive and repetitive. Music is an outlet where there are millions of possibilities within the combinations that you can choose from. Different
patterns can be used to accommodate according to how the artist is feeling and what they are going through. When creating music there are an
indefinite amount of possibilities for the writer to use, yet the majority of the music we listen to seems to always follow a similar rhythmic pattern.
Artists are not taking advantage the privilege they have to express themselves through their creativity. The final product an artist creates should
illustrate an accurate representation of the writer's emotions that the listener should be able to recognize and perhaps relate to the song. Music is a
great way to work with both the dark and the light side of our emotions. Due to music allowing people to reminisce on older memories. Many people

subjects subsume their social mediated music identities.
For this project I would like to do a short three to four minute documentary to analyze how social media helps shape peoples musical identity in this

American Musician, Prince
Prince, also known as Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, The Purple One and Joey Coco, among others, is an American musician whose career has
spanned over three decades from the 1970s. His ever–changing, androgynous style and the innovative and creative approach with which he takes on
musical ventures have helped in him selling millions of albums worldwide and still allows him to have his stake in the rock, funk and R&B genres today.
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, was born in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7th 1958. He was born into a musical family as his
parents Mattie Shaw and John L. Nelson were both musicians. Prince was named after the 'Prince Roger Trio' which was led by his jazz pianist
father, John, and often featured his mother, Mattie, as a jazz singer (GUINESS, 1989). Prince's father encouraged him and his younger sister, Tika, to
take an interest in music from a young age, which led to Prince teaching himself how to play the piano and writing his first composition at the age of
seven.
As a child, Prince was often bullied in school and became a recluse. As a result, he turned to music as a source of refuge and started writing some of
his own music but he never considered music as a career until he saw James Brown live for the first time when he was 10–years old (GUINESS,

The Career As A Musician
Music may be a universal medium, but musician are far from all being treated equally. It has become nearly impossible to make it in the music
industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By
creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For
Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus's Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary
society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian's Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be
financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however,
through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists
they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most
frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. Extreme
close ups are most commonly used while Vandermark is performing, allowing viewers to see his unwavering focus and passion for his work. From the

Musician Career Information
This paper will discuss the career information concerning musicians and singers. It will also cover degree requirements, as well as prospective job
growth. Musicians work in a field that is quite different from most other occupations. These differences will be discussed as well.
Musician Career Information Musicians play or sing music. Regardless of genre, musicians perform in a wide variety of venues. These range from
bars and clubs, to opera houses and stadiums. While some musicians may join a specific band or group, others may become "session" or "studio"
musicians. These musicians tend to be for hire, specifically for recording parts, or for back up in performances.
The career path of musicians and singers is quite different than typical occupations. Musicians and singers are not required to have any technical
degrees. This does not make it an entry–level career by any means. Musicians often begin playing or singing as children, and practice very often.
Though a degree is not necessary, above–average ability is. In the classical realm, most musicians have at least a bachelor's degree, as it may be
required. The schooling trains players in music theory and history, as well as the practice and technique of their instrument.... Show more content on

In fact this is probably the number one thing that dicourages musiccians when they are first starting out. All of us have heard about bands making a
huge profit off a record deal that they singed with. Unforunately this is not the case for most of us. Pretty much all recording company have a
contract of some sort. As little as 14% of those rolaities actual make it back to the artist (Yeh;). Even after all those deductions the artist still owes a
recording fee which takes more away forom that 14% leaving a vey little profit to be made. Cohen thinks you can avoid the major record labels by
recording your own music, but even indie music has had struggles recently. A well know indiemusician Cat Power who had a top selling album in

Beyond 2014: New Ways to Survive as an Independent Recording Artist
INTRODUCTION
Forget everything you think you know about what it takes to be a successful independent recording artist!
On some level, as a struggling independent recording artist or musician, you might think that any one of the following habits will bring you success:
Having a mesmerizing image that matches your music
Breaking a sweat
Going broke to succeed
Hanging on until a record company scopes you out...
...How far has all this gotten you up until now?
With the tech–revolution going on, the music–industry is reinventing itself in terms of how to become successful. At the same time there are thousands

Artists can now bypass record labels. With all the free or almost free ways to download music, the labels themselves are struggling to survive; whereas
before, they were the supreme brokers between artists and their consumers.
When tech–savvy artists look at the music industry today, they see opportunity.
As an independent recording artist, you have a lot going for you. All that is left to do is to step up and act like an Artist– To be creative,
improvisational, and take risks. Musicians have a lot of what it takes to be adaptive, agile, and innovative.
Thanks to Technology, The "undiscovered artist" can now better than ever be the master of his/her own destiny instead of hanging on to be
"discovered" by the masses or record labels.
LEVERAGING THE INTERNET TO GAIN EXPOSURE
The Internet has become an immensely influential stage that artists didn't have ten years ago. Nothing has changed in terms of creating provocative
and inspiring music that can move people. The physical avenue has just largely surrendered to digital distribution – the crowds at live shows have
drastically shrunk, studio technology has become a great deal better and more affordable, and promotional tools have become near–infinite in number –
especially online.

Music : The Power Of Music In Music
The Power of Lyrics
Musicians in this time are thought of as idols or role models. Children strive to be exactly like their favorite rap or pop artist. Because they are so
popular, musicians can be influential in everything they say, whether that be to the media or in their music. Their lyrics become so influential, that
people take them quite literally, and can even act upon some of the things sang by the lyricist. Although this can be dangerous at times, like with
Marilyn Manson being blamed for school shootings, musicians reserve the right to speak freely thru their music, much like everyone has the right to
free speech. Musicians are beloved celebrities because people feel they can connect directly to the musician thru their lyrics. If musicians are not able
to express themselves freely thru their songs, then their music loses all meaning. People no longer will be able to connect to it, because it usually
would not show the artists true emotions. For example, rap artists rap about many different things (drugs, girls, and death) but a lot of times they sing
about their lives, and how they got to where they are. Often, this includes inappropriate content, but this is how the artist chose to represent how they
were feeling, and that should be accepted. Consumers can choose to buy any music they want, thru iTunes, Spotify, Sound Cloud, etc. These consumers
know exactly what they are buying when they purchase explicit music. This is mostly due to them already knowing of

Parents Involvement In Music Education Essay
Parental involvement is a key factor in music education. An analysis showed that "Students whose parents were involved in music and supportive of
their children's musical participation developed better self–concepts in music and felt more comfortable academically and socially(Sichivista)."
Without the parent's involvement, an ensemble would not be able to live to the full potential that it can. The parents are also what helps the students
become greater musicians with their help and motivation. Unfortunately dealing with parents does not always go as easy as we want them to. Some
parents are willing to step in but they do not know where to start. They are completely lost, they do not know here to start. "Parents willing to support
their child's musical learning often do not know how to help the child learning often do not know how to help the child overcome difficulties and
obstacles during the early stages of the learning(Margiotta)." Also, stepping in too much can be a problem in music education. Some parents force ...

How would you describe your style of music?
My style is a cross between pop and adult contemporary. I'm often told that my music is catchy and my lyrics are easily relatable which is the main
aim of the music I create.
Where do you get the ideas for your songwriting?
My ideas come from a wide range of places. I like to go through life learning and absorbing as much as I can. For this reason, I have many thoughts
and ideas which I can then translate into music. Songwriting is a way for me to express myself and definitely an outlet for a lot of what I am

written by Stransky, have to do with past experiences, nature, or people he holds dear to him. The pieces he writes, he wants to be relatable for all
and any who decide to come listen at one of these events. At the event, Stransky will then give a brief overview of each piece discussing the
meaning behind the song. With having a set list for each concert, Stransky has to pick which song he will perform for prior to the event. When
asked in regards how does he decide what songs to put on his set list, Stransky responded by saying, "I want music that people can relate to on a
number of levels so I know that they're going through some medical issues that are really difficult so I want to allow them to feel that sort of sadness
and difficulty of that but I don't want to bring them so down the hill they can't get up again so then I'll put in some pieces that are kind of bouncy and
uplifting and encouraging and then they seem to respond to that mix." This makes Stransky's performances personalized to each event held. The

The Gig Is Up by Nathan Heller is a lengthy article that appeared in The New Yorker, an American magazine. In his article, Heller explains that more

seem to rely on this economy more. Although "gigging" can make life a lot more simple, Heller leaves his audience with a lingering question. Can
they survive it? He sets the stage for his audience by telling a personal experience of his. He moved into an apartment but minor tasks such as hanging
picture frames and artwork had yet to be finished. When the incompletion of tasks became overwhelming he found an online source, TaskRabbit, and
hired someone to complete the tasks for him. He found a man by the name of Seth F., who "wore no tie but had a ninety–nine–percent approval... Show

throughout the article make the audience think about the opportunities the gig economy provides but also the problems it can create as well.
Highly educated people like Seth Flickers who are a part of this economy are now "more than ever before, aware of the careers that they're not

Argumentative Essay: The Change In The Music Industry
Music has been around for centuries, but lately the music industry has been making major changes in how it all works. In the twentieth century music
was bought on CD's, cassette tapes and records where now a days, it is most common to digitally download a song or album rather than getting the
physical copy. While this is a major change occurring, this isn't the biggest change in the industry currently. The biggest debate is on whether an artist
should use their music in advertising campaigns in order to get paid a sum of money. With the music industry being one of the most competitive right
now, artists often choose to do ad campaigns as a way to get their music out there all the while getting paid for it. It has been observed though, that
doing this could cause catastrophic events in their career. Overall, musicians should not do brand deals for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the article "Selling Out Not Worth the Risk" by Darrius Johnson, advertising deals could potentially decrease the artists' popularity. For
example the successful rock band U2 did an advertising deal with Apple to advertise their new album Song of Innocence in 2014. This deal put their
album into 500 million iTunes subscribers' libraries for free, but what they thought was an intelligent advertising move, ended with catastrophic
results for their career. The band faced thousands of fans sending negative feedback on the fact that the album was being forced into their playlists. It
was then labeled as "musical spam" and the reputation of both Apple and U2 was forever damaged. This one brand deal they made in 2014 damaged
their image indefinitely, further showing that advertising deals can cause more harm than good. While it is proven that advertising deals have the
potential to damage an artist's image, it also has the possibility of being over–used and causing the public to stop listening to their

The Enterprising Musicians : An Entrepreneur Thinker
The Enterprising Musician Essay
Entrepreneurs are people, who create opportunities for themselves, risk takers, innovative, creative, always favor challenges of medium risk, and are
highly optimistic. These people have the skills and initiative that are necessary to take good new ideas to market and make the right decisions to make
the idea profitable. So for us, musicians, being an entrepreneur thinker is very important for us in order to make a living. There are so many careers in
music out there for us, for example, writing and production (arranger, orchestration, producer), music business and management (publisher), music
educators (choir/band director, private instructor), music producer and engineer, and so on. Some people will stick to these careers, while others will
try experimenting new things in order for them to be enterprising, but real entrepreneurial thinkers will design their own career, they try to discover
something that no one else has done or is doing, and make it happen. For music artists and entrepreneurs, we have to figure out our passion, skills, and
what we can do to make money for a living. We have to try and experiment with new things, new ways that can make us different and stand out from
the rest of the group. "A music entrepreneur is someone who uses creativity, innovation, and bold leadership to channel his/her passion for music into a
new business that challenges the status quo and has value in the public marketplace." –

What Napster actually does is provide access to nearly every recording anyone oculd want. Napster has not copied or accumulated any of the
recordings available from it; it simply helps people to seek the music that they want. It has music available that may not be available anywhere else,
and it offers instant connection. It allows someone to listen to a song and check out the artist before spending eighteen dollars on the CD. It is like a
"library," where everyone connected "shares" songs with one another. Artists, such as Metallica, who sued Napster, believed their songs were "being
given away and the 'library' as ill–gotten pirate booty."
Another reason why the Recording Industry says that free music should not be allowed is because of the copyright law. In the article, "Chained
melodies" by Damien Cave he discusses the copyright law. Many of the CDs that are coming out these days are being copy–protected. This means that
you are not able to download them onto your computer and put them onto your MP3 player. This is done so that music cannot be downloaded onto
the computer. The problem is that many of the people who would want to download the music are not interested in pirating, they just want to
download it onto their MP3 players and the new CDs will not allow it. Computer Programmers will eventually find a way to unlock the encryption,
and get it to work so that they are able to download their

WhatВґs behind MusicianВґs Dystonia?
Thousand of musicians across the world suffer from Focal Dystonia. Not always correctly diagnosed or understood, it attacks what the musicians love
the most: the music and what they most need: their hands, arms or voice. Facing life ahead with such a condition can become unbelievably difficult
and challenging.
Dystonia is a neurological condition that affects a muscle or a group of them, causing involuntary movements and contractions. ItВґs called Focal
Dystonia when itВґs very focused on a specific area of the body. In the case of MusicianВґs Dystonia it appears in the parts of the body that they
mostly use: Vocal cords for singers, hands for guitar, violin players, etc. MusicianВґs dystonia is in almost all the cases Focal, not affecting a wide
range of parts of the body.
There are two main classifications for Focal Dystonia based on the causes: Primary and secondary. The first one is not caused by any external reason
and is probably caused by a genetic component. The second one is occasioned by an external trauma or any other cause that can trigger the issue. In
the case of musicians, the most of the subjects seem to fall under the second category: the repetitive movements of the same muscles would cause The
Dystonia, even if there could be a genetic predisposition for it. There is not a clear cure for this problem and only some partial solutions as
Neurological re–training or Botox injections seem to alleviate the problem, but not fix it totally.

Music Piracy Should be Illegal
Many people are in discord with the polemical statement, music piracy should be legalised. It is a topic that provokes arguments, as some believe that
it should be free and accessible whereas others believe that it should be paid for and should remain illegitimate.
Music piracy is the act of illegally downloading music for free, bilking sites such as iTunes and iMesh that lawfully sell music to millions of people
worldwide. It is one of the most frequently committed crimes. According to an article in the newspaper 'The Guardian' in 2009, ninety–five per cent of
music available online is downloaded illegally with no payments made to the artist and over 40 billion files were illegally shared in 2008. It may be
a free service but is it ethical? Is it something that society should continue to do or something that should be discouraged? The downloading of songs
using the Internet is a large source of income for musicians. Without this, they would not be earning as much as they currently are. If artists begin to lose
money to pay record labels and advertisers, loyal fans end up paying more money to help support their favourite artists. It can be argued that many
renowned and creditable musicians earn the majority of their money from tours and concerts rather than sales. However, there are also an abundant
number of musicians who have neither the money nor the fame to go on tour. Therefore, if the revenue from sales is taken away from them, they could
be left impecunious and

Musician Suicide

 • 1. Musician Suicide Musician Suicide Ross A. Hudson Bryant University Suicide is an ongoing issue is society today. Every day, individuals take their own lives when the struggles of life become too much as well as a number of other reasons. But while to the general public suicide is a big enough problem, it seems to be only a bigger problem when it comes to musicians and other celebrities. one of the most famous cases happened 20 years ago when lead singer of Nirvana Kurt Cobain took his own life, leaving many fans and psychologists wondering why. It's a phenomenon that has many questioning if there is a positive correlation between being a musicians and being prone to committing suicide as well as the reasons why. In Sheila M. Eldred's article "Why Are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It makes sense, those suffering from major depression often have prolonged periods of sadness, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, as well as social withdrawal and trouble creating ideas. While all these symptoms point to someone who is definitely at risk of suicide, one may wonder why they would show up in a well off and popular musicians when modern psychology points to the poor as being the most susceptible to depression. Contrary to popular belief, while some musicians hit it big and make millions off their music, the vast majority of them don't. they are left to struggle through life trying to find gigs to make enough money to pay the rent. without any one listening or caring about their music, these musicians can start feeling worthless and start losing hope. when this depression becomes so severe they may start having trouble making new music because of the cognitive sluggishness depression brings about creating a vicious cycle of depression that some may see only one outcome to. While major depression might explain most of the musician suicides, but what about the ones that occur with a successful musician. Kurt Cobain, the main example from Eldred's article, was fairly a successful and popular musician with his band Nirvana at the time of his death. • 2. Count Basie Musician When white Americans think of jazz musicians we think new Orleans, sex, drugs, alcohol. Well this is not always the case. Count Basie was from New Jersey and played the piano not the saxophone. He went to New York for his big break in jazz got stranded in Kansas City and became one of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. He led us from big band to bebop. He did not always want to play the piano; he also had a love for drums. Lady's and Gentlemen please give a warm welcome for The King William Count Basie. Lillian and Harvey were blessed with a baby boy on August 21, 1904 in Red Bank New Jersey. They named their son, William James Basie (some sources say his middle name is Allen). James, William's older brother, died when he was a small child. His musical talent came honestly. His father was a mellophonist and his mother was a pianist. Lillian was a laundress and his father was a coachman and a caretaker. As a child William did not always like the piano. When he was a small boy he liked the drums, his father even bought him a trap set to practice on. When he decided to take up the piano, his mother would pay 25 cents for a lady to teach William to play the piano. In addition to his parents working William also worked so he could watch silent films free. Well one day the piano accompanist did not show up so Basie took his place, needless to say he was invited back that evening to play again. After dropping out of high school in his Junior year, he moved to New York ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 3. The Gap Between Vocal And Instrumental Instruction Throughout the beginning of music education, there has been a divide. A separation between the lands of vocalists and instrumentalists existed and still exists today. While it isn't a conscience happening at all times, it can divide a music program into two separate entities. Figuring out how the two areas can coincide will ultimately get music educators on the right tracks for building an excelling program. When students feel that they can be in both and feel wanted in each area and not feel tension between the directors and the music choices, they can thrive. Removing the gap between vocal and instrumental instruction can be done by researching alike techniques and implementing the coinciding department into either program. Although the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With woodwind players, tone can be changed by simply changing the space in the throat and mouth. The same can be said of brass players, but one other aspect lies in the amount of space between the teeth. If enough space between the teeth is not present, especially with young brass players, an unpleasant buzzing sound will occur, once again hindering a beautiful tone. The directors of vocalists push and push for more space in the mouth and throat, especially with young singers that want to sound like the next greatest pop artist. The music performed in the context of concerts and contests at the high school and middle school level, however, need just the opposite. The last way technique overlaps, is in the use of warmups, and technical exercises. Instrumentalists use these on a reoccurring basis for warmups before rehearsal. Scales are learned at a brisk tempo for auditions and at the collegiate level, technique books and extended technique exercises are studied. These are used to not only warm up air, but to also warm up the fingers and gain dexterity. For vocalists, similar processes occur. Before rehearsing, vocalists use warmups; most of which are based on scales, arpeggios and other theory points. They are used to warm up the voice, and get performers aware of their breathing and voice flexibility. All of these are extremely similar to their voice counterparts. Some ... Many famous music artists of today have SoundCloud to thank, like the recent prominent rapper Willie Maxwell II, known professionally as "Fetty Wap." It was April of 2014 when Maxwell II uploaded the track "Trap Queen," which quickly became the anthem of the summer (John). By the end of summer, "Trap Queen" had reached eleven million plays on SoundCloud, which led to a record deal with 300 Entertainment (Gruger). In addition to Maxwell II, SoundCloud also helped music artists like electronic dance musician Skrillex, hip–hop rapper Post Malone, and house musician Kygo. In contrast, Spotify's direction is to provide its listeners with songs for everyone of life's moment. Spotify accomplishes this goal by creating playlists for specific genres and moods. For example, such playlists include Country, R&B, Rock, Holidays, Good Vibes, Mood Booster, Romance, Workout, and Focus. In addition, Spotify's goal is also to allow its users to access Spotify from anywhere through the use of mediums like Davidson 2 computers, smart phones, tablets, home entertainment systems, cars, gaming consoles, and such. Being strikingly different from SoundCloud, the music selection of Spotify is of the already famous musicians of the industry. Therefore, Spotify helps broadcast and promote the 'already' well–known music artists. Secondly, SoundCloud's musical focus is the original–genuine songs of the up and ... • 5. Lateef: A Brief Analysis connecting with the words that are written is what's important and it's not all about just playing the notes that are right in front of him. This seemed to be a big step in his music career and I'm sure it helped to open his mind up to new ideas and new ways of playing such as incorporating improvisation into his music and making the music his own. In addition, he learned what it was like to be in a big band and follow along with other musicians in the band such as Dizzy. By watching the other members and how they played, he learned how important it is to have a good connection with band members and be able to follow along with the different cues and physical movements that Dizzy gave. He was introduced to the blues style while working at some of these clubs and he enjoyed being able to meet new people. Since he knew that he wasn't making enough money, he even got a job at a real estate office where he had to not only take course but also pass a real estate exam to keep the job. Lateef was very busy during this time of his life but it didn't stop him from adding to his music career. On top of playing the saxophone, he also decided to try out of the flute and take classes at a local school to enhance his ability at playing this new instrument. • 6. How Authentic Images Of Artists Are Within The Music Industry 1.Discussion Intro: The following discussion will aim to answer the question of how authentic the images of artists are within the music industry. The question stemmed from research about identity work, in particular within the creative industries. Artists are faced with a lot of identity struggles and tensions which a lot of creative people encounter as well. The main prevailing issue or tension creative people constantly encounter that is unresolved is creativity versus commerce. This idea describes the way in which the process of creativity is being overshadowed and ignored. Art for art's sake is no longer ax powerful term as it once was as the capital gain of creativity has taken over. A great example of this happening is related tomusic artists. Most if not all music artists within the industry are exploited and taken advantage of by recording companies due to contracts. The company owns almost every aspect about an artist including their image when under some type of recording contract. This means the artists image may be in fact be inauthentic and this in turn is the main point of research for this discussion. Points about the tensions artists face and if these tensions ever get resolved will also be raised throughout the discussion as well. Authenticity of an artist's image The main point to be explored within this presentation is how authentic a music artist's image or identity really is. A key piece of research to look into in order to explore this idea is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 7. What Is A Musician? 10/10/14 This weeks musicianship lecture with Dr. John Williams brought an interesting question to light: 'what is a musician?'. It is not a point I had ever given thought to before and my immediate answer to this question was 'someone who plays and performs for a living.' However, that answer seems restricted and inadequate as I would by no means claim that those who play instruments simply for enjoyment are not musicians; even including, since the growth of technology in music, those who don't play an instrument such as DJs or rappers. The dictionary definition is "a person who plays or composes music, esp as a profession," but I would now say that anyone who can be said to be musically talented, or contributes to music in any way, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Genres like punk rock and disco were a bi–product of a changing generation who were breaking boundaries faster than any generation before. We envision the 60's–80's as an era epitomised by outrageous fashion statements, blatant use of drink and drugs and a generally rebellious, reckless attitude to life. I find myself linking this to films like The Boat that Rocked, which, whilst possibly not being completely accurate, seem to capture and portray that restless, rebellious spirit very well. 25/10/14 This week the lecturer discussed the origin of polyphony and the word. Researching this further I came across a paper in which the author, Joseph Jordania, argued that polyphony was not a development of monophony, but was, in fact, an ancient and important part of our evolution. I find this fascinating, as I had always assumed that music and polyphonic singing were a bi–product of evolution – certainly not influencers of it. Euphony, on the other hand, throws up the question: "if the words aren't clear how can the music relate to it's function?" This shows that evidently the words rather than the music were important to the Catholic church, but does this mean that the musical side was then almost dispensable? What role does the music play in the Catholic church? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The salesman began to ring the sale up in his routine manner, but just then something caught his eye. It was a small black sticker on the corner of the CD. This sticker plainly read "explicit lyrics." As the teenager fumbled through his pockets searching for a method of payment, the clerk gave him a questioning glance. "Could I see some identification please?" The clerk's voice cut through the silence like a knife through butter. Immediately the boy's face went from something of a blank stare to a frown. By removing the libretto of La Traviata Verde's opera has lost at least some of its impact or meaning. Though we can not be sure what this particular libretto's content was, we can be sure that we have missed out on some of Giuseppe Verde's work of art. The issue of censorship has been with us for centuries. Due to the argumentative nature of the human race, this issue will in all probability remain with us for centuries to come. Radio broadcasters in the Nineteen Fifties regularly altered and removed certain lyrics that were determined too offensive for listeners. " The Billie Holiday song 'Love for Sale' was banned outright by the ABC radio network in 1956 because of its prostitution theme" (Volz 2). In other cases lyrics were changed in order to allow these hit songs some guaranteed air time. "ABC changed a line in the Cole Porter tune 'I get a kick out of you' from ' I get a kick from cocaine' to ' I get perfume from Spain'"(2). Sure, these lines may well rhyme, but they totally lack the artist's intended meaning. Cole Porter was deprived of a main point he was trying to get across. Once again the unjust act of censorship has robbed the meaning of a song from millions. In 1966 an Irish group named "Them" wrote, and sung, the top selling European song "Gloria." One line in this song, "she comes in my room" was marked offensive by WLS, a radio station in Chicago. This song was so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

American Musician, Prince Prince, also known as Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, The Purple One and Joey Coco, among others, is an American musician whose career has spanned over three decades from the 1970s. His ever–changing, androgynous style and the innovative and creative approach with which he takes on musical ventures have helped in him selling millions of albums worldwide and still allows him to have his stake in the rock, funk and R&B genres today. Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, was born in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7th 1958. He was born into a musical family as his parents Mattie Shaw and John L. Nelson were both musicians. Prince was named after the 'Prince Roger Trio' which was led by his jazz pianist father, John, and often featured his mother, Mattie, as a jazz singer (GUINESS, 1989). Prince's father encouraged him and his younger sister, Tika, to take an interest in music from a young age, which led to Prince teaching himself how to play the piano and writing his first composition at the age of seven. As a child, Prince was often bullied in school and became a recluse. As a result, he turned to music as a source of refuge and started writing some of his own music but he never considered music as a career until he saw James Brown live for the first time when he was 10–years old (GUINESS, 1989). It has become nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus's Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian's Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however, through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. • 26. Music : The Power Of Music In Music The Power of Lyrics Musicians in this time are thought of as idols or role models. Children strive to be exactly like their favorite rap or pop artist. Because they are so popular, musicians can be influential in everything they say, whether that be to the media or in their music. Their lyrics become so influential, that people take them quite literally, and can even act upon some of the things sang by the lyricist. Although this can be dangerous at times, like with Marilyn Manson being blamed for school shootings, musicians reserve the right to speak freely thru their music, much like everyone has the right to free speech. Musicians are beloved celebrities because people feel they can connect directly to the musician thru their lyrics. If musicians are not able to express themselves freely thru their songs, then their music loses all meaning. People no longer will be able to connect to it, because it usually would not show the artists true emotions. For example, rap artists rap about many different things (drugs, girls, and death) but a lot of times they sing about their lives, and how they got to where they are. Often, this includes inappropriate content, but this is how the artist chose to represent how they were feeling, and that should be accepted. In his article, Heller explains that more and more people are relying on a gig–economy as their source of income. He focuses on the millennials more than any other generation because they seem to rely on this economy more. Although "gigging" can make life a lot more simple, Heller leaves his audience with a lingering question. Can they survive it? He sets the stage for his audience by telling a personal experience of his. He moved into an apartment but minor tasks such as hanging picture frames and artwork had yet to be finished. When the incompletion of tasks became overwhelming he found an online source, TaskRabbit, and hired someone to complete the tasks for him. • 35. Argumentative Essay: The Change In The Music Industry Music has been around for centuries, but lately the music industry has been making major changes in how it all works. In the twentieth century music was bought on CD's, cassette tapes and records where now a days, it is most common to digitally download a song or album rather than getting the physical copy. While this is a major change occurring, this isn't the biggest change in the industry currently. The biggest debate is on whether an artist should use their music in advertising campaigns in order to get paid a sum of money. With the music industry being one of the most competitive right now, artists often choose to do ad campaigns as a way to get their music out there all the while getting paid for it. It has been observed though, that doing this could cause catastrophic events in their career. Overall, musicians should not do brand deals for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the article "Selling Out Not Worth the Risk" by Darrius Johnson, advertising deals could potentially decrease the artists' popularity. For example the successful rock band U2 did an advertising deal with Apple to advertise their new album Song of Innocence in 2014. This deal put their album into 500 million iTunes subscribers' libraries for free, but what they thought was an intelligent advertising move, ended with catastrophic results for their career. The band faced thousands of fans sending negative feedback on the fact that the album was being forced into their playlists. It was then labeled as "musical spam" and the reputation of both Apple and U2 was forever damaged. This one brand deal they made in 2014 damaged their image indefinitely, further showing that advertising deals can cause more harm than good. While it is proven that advertising deals have the potential to damage an artist's image, it also has the possibility of being over–used and causing the public to stop listening to their ... • 40. WhatВґs behind MusicianВґs Dystonia? Thousand of musicians across the world suffer from Focal Dystonia. Not always correctly diagnosed or understood, it attacks what the musicians love the most: the music and what they most need: their hands, arms or voice. Facing life ahead with such a condition can become unbelievably difficult and challenging. Dystonia is a neurological condition that affects a muscle or a group of them, causing involuntary movements and contractions. ItВґs called Focal Dystonia when itВґs very focused on a specific area of the body. In the case of MusicianВґs Dystonia it appears in the parts of the body that they mostly use: Vocal cords for singers, hands for guitar, violin players, etc. MusicianВґs dystonia is in almost all the cases Focal, not affecting a wide range of parts of the body. There are two main classifications for Focal Dystonia based on the causes: Primary and secondary. The first one is not caused by any external reason and is probably caused by a genetic component. The second one is occasioned by an external trauma or any other cause that can trigger the issue. In the case of musicians, the most of the subjects seem to fall under the second category: the repetitive movements of the same muscles would cause The Dystonia, even if there could be a genetic predisposition for it. There is not a clear cure for this problem and only some partial solutions as Neurological re–training or Botox injections seem to alleviate the problem, but not fix it totally.
