                                                          exciting new era.

We are proud to present the first
digital edition of The CWR. This is
the first step in the development
of a fantastic digital product that
will look and read just like a printed magazine, and will also be available in print.

Some of the advantages of the digital format include a much less cumbersome
reading experience, the capacity to include more photos, more articles, and more
        features.

Over the course of this year we will expand the contents to include the following
features: How To Succeed In College, CWR Health & Fitness, CWR Business &
Entrepreneurs Guide to Success, CWR Student Empowerment Showcase, S.T.O.P –
Students Taking Over Phenomenally, The College Experience, Music &
Entertainment, Social Networking Forum, an expanded fashion section and much
        more.

As you can see from Dr. Alduan Tartt’s Relationships TNT column, our digital
format allows us to include audio and video content directly into the magazine.
Readers and especially advertisers should enjoy this feature.

We will begin accepting subscriptions for the print version of The New CWR
immediately. Subscribers of the print version will have access to the digital version
for free. Current subscribers of The CWR will also receive the digital version if they
choose, but will need to subscribe for the print version.

     Hampton Institute Memories Thanks to
                 Social Media
                              By Tracey Smith

In March of 2008, a good friend of mine named Chad Dickerson, called me to
inform me of a wonderful site that would link me back to my "Home by the Sea". It
was called the Pirate Roundup which was like walking across campus and being
able to delve back into the past. When he called me, I actually thought by chance
that he was kidding, and that this virtual reunion couldn't exist. He patiently
assisted me through the registration process, and "voila" I was back on the steps
of Ogden Hall, observing the pristine view of Huntington Library, the Holly Tree
Inn, the Stone Building, and the infamous circle that led us back to the female side
of the campus. Those are memories that I don't believe any amount of time will
erase from my mind, I was home.

I immediately hunted for every single person's name that actually
mattered during my extended stay at Hampton Institute. Its
rather interesting when time lapses, names are so difficult to recall,
but the moments, the laughter, and experience will never be
forgotten, and thank goodness for yearbooks for the aging college
          graduates.

When I started searching for my friends, dorm mates, cafeteria
cronies, etc... I was absolutely in awe when I could look at how even
after the quantity of years passing, smiles were familiar, eyes that
glistened still did, gestures remained the same, and people hadn't
changed as much, they actually had metamorphosed into an adult
form of the young adults we professed to be. The people that I
communicate with from this "virtual yard," still have the same tone or
timbre in their voices, the same laughter, the same humor, nothing
          has changed.

Social Media has brought so many people together that mattered in
our lives, that truly meant for something, so there is some good with
aging, the technology. What I will add that has changed, but been
fine tuned, is that these wonderful people all turned out to be exactly
what the Hampton Institute Experience had driven us all to be. They
are successful, tenacious, independent, self-sufficient, articulate,
hardworking individuals that have continued passing the baton of
excellence on to their own children.

I can remember the nervous excitement of
attending my first Convocation, and hearing
Maya Angelou speak a steady but yet heartfelt
speech, I knew then, that this was no ordinary
institution of higher learning, this was a "black
utopia." For once in my life, I felt comfortable
in the skin I was in, and as Ms. Billie Holiday
sings, "Don't Explain." I didn't have to explain.
I didn't have to feel the exclusion and angst of
being the only African-American in my college
prep courses; I was sitting in classes amongst
the black glitterati. These were students who

I learned so many different attributes from
these students who traveled from different
regions of the continent, and what is extremely
poignant, even as a student, you could safely
predict who would be a success and who would
                                               find their niche in society.

It was difficult for me to leave Hampton; I
would never be able to feel that same sense of
comfort and adventure again in my life. I've
always attempted to explore other experiences
that would evoke similar memories, but my
college experience is not one to be
                                               duplicated, and nor are the

say that I am a graduate of the most

Any graduate of Hampton Institute can agree that we had the best
teacher that bestowed upon us gusto to survive, the finesse to
network, and to be shrewd. Dr. William Harvey has always been a
very compelling businessman who continues to run our campus like a
          well oiled machine. He has made significant changes for the better;
there have been enhancements in innovation, to allow for a more
          competitive edge within the mainstream.

view while standing in front of the President's Mansion.

I am glad to see the faces of yesteryear now on Facebook, to look at
photos of children and see hints of their parent's features, I'm
ultimately glad to be able to say hello to people that I had lost contact
with and never thought I would merge with again. We are very lucky to
have experienced the Hampton Experience, and everything that came
with it; from the CC store, to the Labor Day Beach Parties at Croatan,
The Fraternity and Sorority Cabarets, Convocation and good ol' dorm
          life.
I can even appreciate the arduous task of registration, walking over the
bridge to Safeway Grocery Store, reselling books at the bookstore in
balmy weather and more; all of these experiences and so many more
are what we can safely say are simple but cherished memories, that
are irreplaceable. These instances are different for each student or
class, but gainfully contributed to their character as an adult.

I know there have been many cosmetic changes to the school, and I
must admit, I'm not sure I'll be ready to try to piece all of the missing
landmarks in my mind, but memories are what sustains me, and I'll
always remember 302 Kelsey Hall and learning a lot about people and
          life at Hampton Institute.

This "virtual yard", thanks to social media, has become an addiction
to some of us, but I also believe, its a means of just being able to go
back to a time when life was easy, less complicated, and free. Is there
anything wrong with being able to escape to a place that brought you
infinite happiness in the form of people and scenarios?

Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute was founded in 1868 by
General Samuel Armstrong. He was interested in moral training and
a practical, industrial education for southern blacks. In 1872,
Booker T. Washington-who had born a slave in Virginia-arrived at
the school with fifty cents in his pocket. After graduating,
Washington was given administrative responsibilities at the school,
and in 1881 Armstrong recommended Washington to head
Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. By 1900, that school has numerous
buildings, 100 faculty members, and more than 1,400 students.

10 Tips For Writing A Great Business Plan
                         By Daniel Kehrer
Whether you're looking to turn an entrepreneurial dream into reality
or re-evaluate and expand an existing business, a smart business plan
can make all the difference. Every successful launch starts with a
good business plan. Using business plan software to help you is
a good idea, too. And starting with a good sample business plan
sample will help you write a business plan in record time.

Writing a business plan is the first step in turning an idea into a
thriving business, starting a new division of an existing company, or
simply breathing new life into one that may need a push to get
through a tough time. Not only does writing out your idea force you to
think more clearly about what you want to do, it gives the people you
work with a defined road map as well. An effective plan provides the
navigation chart that you'll use to get where you want to go.

Here are 10 tips and tactics for business plan success:

             1. A good business plan is simple, easy to understand and as
easy as possible to act on.

             2. A good plan is also detailed and specific with concrete and
measurable objectives. Make sure it includes specific actions and
activities -- each with specific dates of completion, specific
                  persons responsible and specific budgets.

             3. A good business plan is realistic, with achievable sales goals,
expense budgets, and milestone dates. Nothing stifles
implementation like a business plan with unrealistic goals.

             4. A good plan is complete. Make sure it includes all the necessary
elements. Have you tapped the right business plan resources,
including free sample business plans and business plan software?
Requirements of a business plan vary, depending on the context.
There is no guarantee, however, that the plan will work if it
                  doesn't cover the main bases.

           5. Take your time and get it right. It's tempting to rush through the
planning process in your excitement to get a venture underway. But
time spent on planning at the outset will save you far more time later
on. Your time will be even more precious once your plan is in action.

           6. Focus on market and competitive research. A good business plan
should be based on more than just your own great ideas. An effective
plan depends on a complete and accurate understanding of your
market, your customers, your financial situation and other factors.
Comprehensive research will get you the answers you need and might
                 even change your plan altogether.

           7. Pick the right team to help build your business. The ultimate
success of your new venture depends on the dedication and
motivation of the people involved. You can't do it all on your own.
Involving your team in the planning process will be a great source of
insight for you as you decide what will work and what won’t.

           8. Turn your dream and your ideas into solid timelines. Most
business plans start with an idea: a dream to do something new,
exciting or different. During those initial planning stages, you have
big ideas, lofty goals, and the possibilities seem endless. It's easy to
get lost in the "someday" of it all and forget that in the beginning,
you have to make actual progress toward sustainable results. Seeing
goals being met and things being crossed off your to-do list helps
                 keep you moving forward.

           9. Don't forget about your financial forms. If you want to get
results with your plan, make sure your financial forms look
professional and have the correct information. The U.S. Small
Business Administration (SBA) offers helpful advice on preparing
your finances. Look under "Starting & Managing a Business" at
                 SBA.gov.

           10. Write a plan that people will read. Don't get carried away with
big words and fancy formulas. A business plan works only if people
use it, so you need to create a plan that is concise, complete, and
readable. Don't weight it down with jargon, buzzwords, unfamiliar
terminology, or overly-lofty goals. Inevitably, the only person that
will impress is you. It will be much more impressive if you can
construct a plan that people are interested in and that motivates
them to want to be involved.

5 TIPS FOR BETTER FRESHMAN YEAR SURVIVAL:

       1. Attend orientations - This is the most important tip that I suggest to all
new students going into college. Attend your orientations over the summer.
This gives you the opportunity to meet your future class-mates and know
more about them. Attending orientations also gives you the golden
opportunity to start getting comfortable with the campus.

       2. Get involved in college activities - One more way of surviving your
freshman year in college is to keep yourself mentally active. The best and
most healthy way of implementing this is to actively participate in your
college club activities, sororities or sports teams. Apart from other
advantages, this will keep you constantly engaged and will lessen the
             moments of your home sickness.

       3. Be disciplined - Discipline in your life takes you to greater heights. So try
to bring in a certain amount of discipline in your everyday activity. Get
yourself into an orderly style of living your day-to-day routine (like wake up
hours, preparation time everyday, extra-curricular activity on a regular basis
and so on). Your main aim at this point of time is to work hard and get the
best possible grades. Devote your energy and resources towards this
             end.

       4. Get Organized - College life needs to be taken a lot more seriously than
your school life. It is here that you are building a strong foundation for a
successful future. Be more organized in your approach towards studying.

       5. Learn to seek help - You must get to know your academic advisor in a
proper manner. This person happens to be the most precious resource at
your hand. With the able guidance of the academic advisor, all your issues
pertaining to your course conflicts, changing course, deciding on your
subject of specialization etc can be handled in an amazingly easy manner to
the best of your interests. Never hesitate to go for professional help when
you think you are in need of it.

You are at college as a result of your hard work at school and the efforts and
prayers of your loved ones. Do not leave any stone unturned in laying your
groundwork for a successful college career. Try to survive your freshman year in
       the best possible manner.

Have fun as well as learn as much as you can and get the most from your college
life and you will be able to look back at your freshman year with a smile later in
       life...

          Resume Essentials: Gather The Data
                  By Tara Goodfellow, MBA

On a regular basis, clients tell me they wish they had kept
track of their accomplishments along the way. This comes
from CEO's, upper level sales managers, directors, and
professionals spanning several industries. Things seem
routine when you're doing them daily as part of your
job. It's when you're looking for a new one that it becomes
challenging to recall all the fantastic improvements you
made for the company. So, start gathering the data and
                  details now!

Keep education and employment related data in a format
that's comfortable for you. It can be in a file folder, excel
application, or on your phone. What exactly is meant by
                  data?

                  • Education. You'll need your correct degree listed,
college name, town, and graduation date. That's
pretty basic, but you can also consider listing your
GPA (if it's strong, of course), major GPA, honors,
awards, recognitions, and activities which are
                      education related.

                  • Courses. Please don't list every course you've
taken since your first semester. Do keep a list of
major related course titles so you can highlight them
should a job requisition mention that skill/field of
study is required or strongly desired.

                  • Internships. You'll need the employer's name, city,
state, and dates (month/year to month/year). For
some, internships are required. For others, it's
optional and not always appealing since many are
unpaid. Consider it. It can strongly enhance your
experience section as an internship shows valuable
skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and hands on
field experience. It can be a struggle to gain
experience and often your competition has it. So, do
what it takes, ask for feedback, and a job
                      description.

           • Part time employment. You'll need the company's name, your
official title, city, state, and dates of employment. Students are
sometimes advised to leave off non-industry related work
experience. I agree with this statement only if you have a solid
amount of industry related work experience. However, if you
don't, list it. It shows many of those transferrable skills that
employers are looking for. It absolutely requires strong time
management skills to juggle working part time and attending
college full time! Be sure to make note of any promotions or
additional responsibilities you earn along the way.

           • High School. Once you graduate college, remove your high
school information and related activities. To present a resume
while you're in college, say for a part time job, some high school
information is okay. It should be impressive and relevant though.

Didn't realize you've accomplished so much, did you? Next month
we'll detail a suggested format for your resume. However, you'll save
yourself a lot of time by keeping track of related accomplishments
during your college years instead of having to search for job
descriptions, course titles, and dates once you're in need of a full time
           job as a college graduate.

This allows the professor to inform you are on the right track.
Approaching the professor in this manner demonstrates that you have
carefully considered the question, instead of simply looking for an
answer that you would simply write about, without much thought.

Assume that your explanation to the professor is correct; there may still
be concerns about where to begin. Refer back to the instructions and
create an outline, or headers in your paper that you will discuss. Here is
an acceptable outline for this assignment.

              I. Introduction
             II. Personal Adventure
            III. Obstacle and Solution
            IV. Conclusion

In the introduction section, discuss the purpose of the paper and tell the
reader what the essay contains. For example, this section could contain
         the following:

The purpose of this essay is to present an understanding
of critical thinking and problem solving. This paper
discusses a personal, challenging encounter that
occurred within the past 10 years, an obstacle and the
solution that was applied to overcome this obstacle.

Your reader clearly understands the purpose and forthcoming content.

In the personal adventure section, clearly discuss the adventure, so the
reader has a clear understanding of who, what, when, where, why and
how. Assume the reader does not know anything about the subject
matter. For example, this section could contain the following:

In July 2007, my family and I traveled to Paris, France.
                        Additional details can be discussed.

In the obstacle and solution section, the essay could include:

When we arrived at a famous French restaurant and had
a scrumptious meal, my father discovered that his
wallet was not in his pocket. No one had cash or credit
cards. Just then, a restaurant associated asked my dad
to come to the front counter and said his name had
been drawn for a free meal. Although, this had a happy

ending, this could have been a major obstacle. If we
had not won a free meal, then we would have had to
take a cab back to the hotel to retrieve my father's
wallet, or called my aunt, who stayed behind and ask
                      her to bring the wallet.

In the conclusion section, you want to recap the paper's content. A
simple way of doing this is to copy the introduction and write it in the
past tense, adding a little "golden nugget." For example, the conclusion
        could include:

Critical thinking and problem solving is essential in
life. This paper discussed a personal encounter that
occurred within the past 10 years, which was my
family's visit to Paris, France. It presented a happy
ending to a potentially devastating issue. The paper also
discussed a possible obstacle, along with a potential
                        solution to overcome this matter.

As you can see, essay writing does not have to be a daunting task. By
addressing the requirements and providing the necessary details, you
produce a quality essay. Plan ahead and avoid procrastination. If your
professor has a word or page count (minimum or maximum), make sure
you comply. If you have too much content, review and see what "fluff"
can be eliminated. If there is not enough content, add more details or an
additional possible solution. Remember, the professor is looking for
precision and clear synthesis. Therefore, this should be your goal when
composing a written compilation. Happy essay writing!

              Pulling Your Image Package Together
                     By Natalie Jobity, MBA

Last month we talked about the Last month's article examined key
importance of thinking of your image business accessories for
as a package. In a professional professionals and this month we
context, your image package want to go a little deeper with that
includes your clothing, your topic. When you research the word
accessories, your level of "accessory" it means: "an addition
professionalism, your communication to enhance performance". Working
skills, your confidence, your energy- with this definition, doesn't it make
anything that impacts perceptions sense that an accessory could
about your ability to get the job include any and everything that
done. Many professionals think of enhances the way you look, your
their image mostly in terms of their professional presentation and how
clothing and accessories, but it truly you are perceived? Let's take a look
is every aspect of yourself that at a few additional accessories you
others can see, feel, and experience. may be taking for granted.

             • Your wallet. We take our wallet out of our handbags or back
pockets repeatedly in a business context. Imagine you pulled out a
wallet that was ripped and torn. What message do you think that
would convey about your professional presence?

             • Your business card holder. Networking will be a big part of a
college student's life, especially once you start getting internships.
You may want to consider having a simple business card made
with your contact information to hand out to people you meet. But
where do you put these cards? In a business card holder worthy of
the soon to be super successful professional you are being
                  groomed to be. Right?

             • Your outerwear. Coats, raincoats and trenches are clothing that
can be categorized as business accessories. In the cooler months
the first thing people are going to see is your coat. If your coat is
drab, old, otherwise tattered or simply too casual for a business
environment it is not going to cut it. Your coat/trench can be an
image maker or breaker. Make sure yours is the former!

           • Ladies your makeup and nail polish are absolutely accessories.
Your makeup needs to be polished and subtle for work. No
shimmery eye shadow, no loud colors, no smoky eyes.
Seriously. The same goes for your nail polish. Keep it classic and
understated when in doubt. You can never go wrong with a
                French manicure.

           • Perfume/cologne is what I like to call an "invisible" accessory but
it definitely makes a statement. Wear too much and you risk
offending someone's sensibilities or allergies. It is actually quite
unprofessional to wear a really strong scent in a business
situation. So less is definitely more.

           • An audible accessory is your cell phone ring. While having your
favorite hip hop jam as your ring tone is perfectly fine for most
of your college life, when you need to present a professional
image, you have to tone everything down accordingly, and in
this case I mean quite literally your cell phone ring tone. Have a
special one just for those occasions when more decorum is
called for. Sticking to the classics or generic ring tones is always
                 a safe bet.

           • Other accessories of note: your umbrella, hat (if you wear one),
the pen you write with, your cell phone case, sunglasses, hair
accessories. All of these are part of your image package. Are
you confident these accessories are working FOR you?

By now you should have a clear very good idea of the clothing and
picture of the point of this article. accessories that are appropriate for
In a nutshell, everything counts! business situations. Next month,

We are proud to present the first digital edition of The CWR. This is the first step in the development of a fantastic digital product that will look and read just like a printed magazine, and will also be available in print. Over the course of this year we will expand the contents to include the following features: How To Succeed In College, CWR Health & Fitness, CWR Business & Entrepreneurs Guide to Success, CWR Student Empowerment Showcase, S.T.O.P – Students Taking Over Phenomenally, The College Experience, Music & Entertainment, Social Networking Forum, an expanded fashion section and much more. As you can see from Dr. Alduan Tartt’s Relationships TNT column, our digital format allows us to include audio and video content directly into the magazine. Readers and especially advertisers should enjoy this feature. We will begin accepting subscriptions for the print version of The New CWR immediately. Subscribers of the print version will have access to the digital version for free. • 10. Feature Story Hampton Institute Memories Thanks to Social Media By Tracey Smith In March of 2008, a good friend of mine named Chad Dickerson, called me to inform me of a wonderful site that would link me back to my "Home by the Sea". It was called the Pirate Roundup which was like walking across campus and being able to delve back into the past. When he called me, I actually thought by chance that he was kidding, and that this virtual reunion couldn't exist. He patiently assisted me through the registration process, and "voila" I was back on the steps of Ogden Hall, observing the pristine view of Huntington Library, the Holly Tree Inn, the Stone Building, and the infamous circle that led us back to the female side of the campus. Those are memories that I don't believe any amount of time will erase from my mind, I was home. The Pan-Hellenic Council in front of Ogden Hall. The CWR | April 2011 10
  • 11. Feature Story I immediately hunted for every single person's name that actually mattered during my extended stay at Hampton Institute. Its rather interesting when time lapses, names are so difficult to recall, but the moments, the laughter, and experience will never be forgotten, and thank goodness for yearbooks for the aging college graduates. When I started searching for my friends, dorm mates, cafeteria cronies, etc... I was absolutely in awe when I could look at how even after the quantity of years passing, smiles were familiar, eyes that glistened still did, gestures remained the same, and people hadn't changed as much, they actually had metamorphosed into an adult form of the young adults we professed to be. The people that I communicate with from this "virtual yard," still have the same tone or timbre in their voices, the same laughter, the same humor, nothing has changed. Social Media has brought so many people together that mattered in our lives, that truly meant for something, so there is some good with aging, the technology. What I will add that has changed, but been fine tuned, is that these wonderful people all turned out to be exactly what the Hampton Institute Experience had driven us all to be. They are successful, tenacious, independent, self-sufficient, articulate, hardworking individuals that have continued passing the baton of excellence on to their own children. Richard Wilson, Tracey Smith, and Charlie Taylor on the waterfront during summer session of '83. The CWR | April 2011 11
  • 12. Feature Story I can remember the nervous excitement of attending my first Convocation, and hearing Maya Angelou speak a steady but yet heartfelt speech, I knew then, that this was no ordinary institution of higher learning, this was a "black utopia." For once in my life, I felt comfortable in the skin I was in, and as Ms. Billie Holiday sings, "Don't Explain." I didn't have to explain. I didn't have to feel the exclusion and angst of being the only African-American in my college prep courses; I was sitting in classes amongst the black glitterati. These were students who The Scrollers of Kappa Alpha Psi were third generation Hamptonians, and had Fraternity during the pledging an ancestry that was as rich as churned butter. process...Beta Chi Chapter Spring '81. I learned so many different attributes from these students who traveled from different regions of the continent, and what is extremely poignant, even as a student, you could safely predict who would be a success and who would find their niche in society. It was difficult for me to leave Hampton; I would never be able to feel that same sense of comfort and adventure again in my life. I've always attempted to explore other experiences that would evoke similar memories, but my college experience is not one to be duplicated, and nor are the friends I encountered. I am proud to be able to say that I am a graduate of the most prestigious HBCU in the country. The Ivy Pledgees of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. • 14. Feature Story Any graduate of Hampton Institute can agree that we had the best teacher that bestowed upon us gusto to survive, the finesse to network, and to be shrewd. Dr. William Harvey has always been a very compelling businessman who continues to run our campus like a well oiled machine. He has made significant changes for the better; there have been enhancements in innovation, to allow for a more competitive edge within the mainstream. Hampton University President, Dr. William Harvey, enjoying the view while standing in front of the President's Mansion. I am glad to see the faces of yesteryear now on Facebook, to look at photos of children and see hints of their parent's features, I'm ultimately glad to be able to say hello to people that I had lost contact with and never thought I would merge with again. We are very lucky to have experienced the Hampton Experience, and everything that came with it; from the CC store, to the Labor Day Beach Parties at Croatan, The Fraternity and Sorority Cabarets, Convocation and good ol' dorm life. I can even appreciate the arduous task of registration, walking over the bridge to Safeway Grocery Store, reselling books at the bookstore in balmy weather and more; all of these experiences and so many more are what we can safely say are simple but cherished memories, that are irreplaceable. These instances are different for each student or class, but gainfully contributed to their character as an adult. The CWR | April 2011 14
  • 15. Feature Story I know there have been many cosmetic changes to the school, and I must admit, I'm not sure I'll be ready to try to piece all of the missing landmarks in my mind, but memories are what sustains me, and I'll always remember 302 Kelsey Hall and learning a lot about people and life at Hampton Institute. This "virtual yard", thanks to social media, has become an addiction to some of us, but I also believe, its a means of just being able to go back to a time when life was easy, less complicated, and free. Is there anything wrong with being able to escape to a place that brought you infinite happiness in the form of people and scenarios? Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute was founded in 1868 by General Samuel Armstrong. He was interested in moral training and a practical, industrial education for southern blacks. In 1872, Booker T. Washington-who had born a slave in Virginia-arrived at the school with fifty cents in his pocket. After graduating, Washington was given administrative responsibilities at the school, and in 1881 Armstrong recommended Washington to head Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. By 1900, that school has numerous buildings, 100 faculty members, and more than 1,400 students. The CWR | April 2011 15

  • 22. Business 10 Tips For Writing A Great Business Plan By Daniel Kehrer Whether you're looking to turn an entrepreneurial dream into reality or re-evaluate and expand an existing business, a smart business plan can make all the difference. Every successful launch starts with a good business plan. Using business plan software to help you is a good idea, too. And starting with a good sample business plan sample will help you write a business plan in record time. Writing a business plan is the first step in turning an idea into a thriving business, starting a new division of an existing company, or simply breathing new life into one that may need a push to get through a tough time. Not only does writing out your idea force you to think more clearly about what you want to do, it gives the people you work with a defined road map as well. An effective plan provides the navigation chart that you'll use to get where you want to go. Here are 10 tips and tactics for business plan success: 1. A good business plan is simple, easy to understand and as easy as possible to act on. 2. A good plan is also detailed and specific with concrete and measurable objectives. Make sure it includes specific actions and activities -- each with specific dates of completion, specific persons responsible and specific budgets. 3. A good business plan is realistic, with achievable sales goals, expense budgets, and milestone dates. Nothing stifles implementation like a business plan with unrealistic goals. 4. A good plan is complete. Make sure it includes all the necessary elements. Have you tapped the right business plan resources, including free sample business plans and business plan software? Requirements of a business plan vary, depending on the context. There is no guarantee, however, that the plan will work if it doesn't cover the main bases. The CWR | April 2011 22
  • 23. Business 5. Take your time and get it right. It's tempting to rush through the planning process in your excitement to get a venture underway. But time spent on planning at the outset will save you far more time later on. Your time will be even more precious once your plan is in action. 6. Focus on market and competitive research. A good business plan should be based on more than just your own great ideas. An effective plan depends on a complete and accurate understanding of your market, your customers, your financial situation and other factors. Comprehensive research will get you the answers you need and might even change your plan altogether. 7. Pick the right team to help build your business. The ultimate success of your new venture depends on the dedication and motivation of the people involved. You can't do it all on your own. Involving your team in the planning process will be a great source of insight for you as you decide what will work and what won’t. 8. Turn your dream and your ideas into solid timelines. Most business plans start with an idea: a dream to do something new, exciting or different. During those initial planning stages, you have big ideas, lofty goals, and the possibilities seem endless. It's easy to get lost in the "someday" of it all and forget that in the beginning, you have to make actual progress toward sustainable results. Seeing goals being met and things being crossed off your to-do list helps keep you moving forward. 9. Don't forget about your financial forms. If you want to get results with your plan, make sure your financial forms look professional and have the correct information. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offers helpful advice on preparing your finances. Look under "Starting & Managing a Business" at SBA.gov. 10. Write a plan that people will read. Don't get carried away with big words and fancy formulas. A business plan works only if people use it, so you need to create a plan that is concise, complete, and readable. Don't weight it down with jargon, buzzwords, unfamiliar terminology, or overly-lofty goals. Inevitably, the only person that will impress is you. It will be much more impressive if you can construct a plan that people are interested in and that motivates them to want to be involved. Copyright © 2000-2011 BizBest Media Corp. • 30. Student Loans 5 TIPS FOR BETTER FRESHMAN YEAR SURVIVAL: 1. Attend orientations - This is the most important tip that I suggest to all new students going into college. Attend your orientations over the summer. This gives you the opportunity to meet your future class-mates and know more about them. Attending orientations also gives you the golden opportunity to start getting comfortable with the campus. 2. Get involved in college activities - One more way of surviving your freshman year in college is to keep yourself mentally active. The best and most healthy way of implementing this is to actively participate in your college club activities, sororities or sports teams. Apart from other advantages, this will keep you constantly engaged and will lessen the moments of your home sickness. 3. Be disciplined - Discipline in your life takes you to greater heights. So try to bring in a certain amount of discipline in your everyday activity. Get yourself into an orderly style of living your day-to-day routine (like wake up hours, preparation time everyday, extra-curricular activity on a regular basis and so on). Your main aim at this point of time is to work hard and get the best possible grades. Devote your energy and resources towards this end. 4. Get Organized - College life needs to be taken a lot more seriously than your school life. It is here that you are building a strong foundation for a successful future. Be more organized in your approach towards studying. 5. Learn to seek help - You must get to know your academic advisor in a proper manner. This person happens to be the most precious resource at your hand. With the able guidance of the academic advisor, all your issues pertaining to your course conflicts, changing course, deciding on your subject of specialization etc can be handled in an amazingly easy manner to the best of your interests. Never hesitate to go for professional help when you think you are in need of it. You are at college as a result of your hard work at school and the efforts and prayers of your loved ones. Do not leave any stone unturned in laying your groundwork for a successful college career. Try to survive your freshman year in the best possible manner. Have fun as well as learn as much as you can and get the most from your college life and you will be able to look back at your freshman year with a smile later in life... © Copyright Donell Edwards Media, 2008 -2010. • 35. Career Planning Resume Essentials: Gather The Data By Tara Goodfellow, MBA On a regular basis, clients tell me they wish they had kept track of their accomplishments along the way. This comes from CEO's, upper level sales managers, directors, and professionals spanning several industries. Things seem routine when you're doing them daily as part of your job. It's when you're looking for a new one that it becomes challenging to recall all the fantastic improvements you made for the company. So, start gathering the data and details now! Keep education and employment related data in a format that's comfortable for you. It can be in a file folder, excel application, or on your phone. What exactly is meant by data? • Education. You'll need your correct degree listed, college name, town, and graduation date. That's pretty basic, but you can also consider listing your GPA (if it's strong, of course), major GPA, honors, awards, recognitions, and activities which are education related. • Courses. Please don't list every course you've taken since your first semester. Do keep a list of major related course titles so you can highlight them should a job requisition mention that skill/field of study is required or strongly desired. • Internships. You'll need the employer's name, city, state, and dates (month/year to month/year). For some, internships are required. For others, it's optional and not always appealing since many are unpaid. Consider it. It can strongly enhance your experience section as an internship shows valuable skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and hands on field experience. It can be a struggle to gain experience and often your competition has it. So, do what it takes, ask for feedback, and a job description. The CWR | April 2011 35
  • 36. Career Planning • Part time employment. You'll need the company's name, your official title, city, state, and dates of employment. Students are sometimes advised to leave off non-industry related work experience. I agree with this statement only if you have a solid amount of industry related work experience. However, if you don't, list it. It shows many of those transferrable skills that employers are looking for. It absolutely requires strong time management skills to juggle working part time and attending college full time! Be sure to make note of any promotions or additional responsibilities you earn along the way. • High School. Once you graduate college, remove your high school information and related activities. To present a resume while you're in college, say for a part time job, some high school information is okay. It should be impressive and relevant though. Didn't realize you've accomplished so much, did you? Next month we'll detail a suggested format for your resume. However, you'll save yourself a lot of time by keeping track of related accomplishments during your college years instead of having to search for job descriptions, course titles, and dates once you're in need of a full time job as a college graduate. This paper discusses a personal, challenging encounter that occurred within the past 10 years, an obstacle and the solution that was applied to overcome this obstacle. Your reader clearly understands the purpose and forthcoming content. In the personal adventure section, clearly discuss the adventure, so the reader has a clear understanding of who, what, when, where, why and how. Assume the reader does not know anything about the subject matter. For example, this section could contain the following: In July 2007, my family and I traveled to Paris, France. Additional details can be discussed. In the obstacle and solution section, the essay could include: When we arrived at a famous French restaurant and had a scrumptious meal, my father discovered that his wallet was not in his pocket. If we had not won a free meal, then we would have had to take a cab back to the hotel to retrieve my father's wallet, or called my aunt, who stayed behind and ask her to bring the wallet. In the conclusion section, you want to recap the paper's content. A simple way of doing this is to copy the introduction and write it in the past tense, adding a little "golden nugget." For example, the conclusion could include: Critical thinking and problem solving is essential in life. This paper discussed a personal encounter that occurred within the past 10 years, which was my family's visit to Paris, France. It presented a happy ending to a potentially devastating issue. The paper also discussed a possible obstacle, along with a potential solution to overcome this matter. As you can see, essay writing does not have to be a daunting task. By addressing the requirements and providing the necessary details, you produce a quality essay. Plan ahead and avoid procrastination. If your professor has a word or page count (minimum or maximum), make sure you comply. If you have too much content, review and see what "fluff" can be eliminated. If there is not enough content, add more details or an additional possible solution. Remember, the professor is looking for precision and clear synthesis. Therefore, this should be your goal when composing a written compilation. Happy essay writing! © Copyright Donell Edwards Media, 2008 -2010. All rights reserved. The CWR | April 2011 39
