Biopsychosocial Model Of Mental Health
The biopsychosocial model is a holistic approach to mental health. This view focuses on not only the
individual's mental condition, but also on the wider factors that interact to influence mental health.
The use of the biopsychosocial model uses both internal and external factors to evaluate mental
health. Internal factors include biological factors such as genetics, response to medication and
physiological response to stress, as well as psychological factors including thoughts, ways of
thinking and personality traits. External factors are also included in the model through social factors,
including interpersonal relationships, access to health care and social support (Grivas & Letch,
2017). It is this interaction of biological,...show more content...
In everyday life, anxiety is an adaptive response to deal with short–term threatening, dangerous or
emergency situations (Grivas & Letch, 2017). This can temporarily activate the sympathetic nervous
system and the fight–flight–freeze response, causing physiological symptoms of dizziness,
trembling, shortness of breath and increased heart rate. Stress and anxiety may be seen in other
mental disorders, such as specific phobia, but are not considered mental disorders. Specific phobia
is a phobia "marked by persistent fear or anticipation of a specific situation in which exposure to the
phobic stimulus almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response" (Grös & Antony,
2006). Specific phobias can be categorised into four main types ,animal type, natural environment
type, blood–injection–injury type and situation type.
Causes of Specific Phobia:
There are several causes of specific phobia, in all biological, psychological and social components.
One social cause of specific phobia is cognitive bias, resulting in catastrophic thinking. A cognitive
bias is a way of thinking that involves errors of judgement and faulty decision making (Grivas &
Letch, 2017). A type of cognitive bias is catastrophic thinking, a thought process where the
individual predicts the worst possible outcome if faced with a phobic stimulus. "Catastrophic
thinking has been demonstrated to play a role in a wide variety of

Biopsychosocial Model Essay
Introduction
The drug epidemic in the United States has been enlightening. Illegal drugs have cost the United
States approximately 600 billion in total costs to the economy including lost wages. The
biopsychosocial model is a combination of biology (body) and social, psychological (mind, and
community (social). The biopsychosocial model provided a holistic approach to medicine. The
biopsychosocial approach systematically considers biological, psychological and social factors and
their complex interactions understanding healthcare, illness and health care delivery.

The brain 's proper functioning ensures our very survival. When our brains functions well, we are
constantly adapting to our environment (our surroundings). Ironically, it is the brain 's ability to be
so adaptive that contributes to the formation of addiction. Alcoholism causes changes to the brain in
at least four fundamental ways: 1. Alcoholism causes changes to the brain 's natural balance
(homeostasis). 2. Alcoholism alters brain chemistry. 3. Alcoholism changes the brain 's
communication patterns. 4. Alcoholism causes changes to brain structures and their functioning

Week one was a great start to the class, I enjoyed learning about stress and how it can impact
every life. It was nice to express the stress I had coping with school and a toddler. I enjoyed
reading my classmate's posts, plus learning about their stressors, helped me to understand who they
are a little better. I enjoyed knowing most of us had similar coping strategies. It gave me a sense of
comaradity, because you always feel you're the only one going through difficulties and no one will
understand. I liked learning about the biopsychosocial approach from a social influence point of
view. I am more aware of each perspective and what role they place in analyzing human behaviour
and why each is valuable to science. Overall week one topic

Biopsychosocial Spiritual Framework
In the profession of social work, a social worker will encounter numerous clients who all have
unique and varying degrees of experiences and problems that they either actively are choosing to
work on or are being mandated by a third party to seek help. Because each new client presents
different challenges and issues for the social worker, they must have a foundation on which to rely
to better understand where their client is coming from and what factors may be playing a role in
that client's life. Theory provides frameworks for social workers to begin to understand the depth of
their client's needs. These frameworks help provide a foundation for social work practice.
How Theory Plays a Role in Social Work Practice Theory helps explain...show more content...
This is vitally important when working with victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Many
times, intervention is associated with getting the victim out of the abusive situation, but those
who aim to help often fail to see the multiple factors that may prevent the victim from leaving. By
looking at clients affected by intimate partner violence through a biopsychosocial spiritual
framework, social workers acknowledge and address multiple aspects of the individual's life that
are influencing whether they stay or go. Research by Nurius and Macy shows that "each
individual appraises and copes with the threat of IPV in a unique biopsychosocial [spiritual]
context" (2010, p. 1068). Their research with female victims of IPV in Washington shows that
women who are presented with same or similar stressors may react in a different manner based on
their interpretation of said stressor (Nurius and Macy, 2010, p. 1068). Using this framework, they
found that women who claimed to have strong social support systems showed less incidents of
depression than those who reported having poor social support systems (Nurius and Macy, 2010, p.
1080). The levels and types of violence experienced by these women varied, but the strong social
support was one piece that linked these women together. Similarly, in a study conducted by Drumm

Abstract
Two types of medical interviews are the biomedical approach, involving only biological factors, and
the biopsychosocial approach that includes both psychosocial factors and biological factors.
Because of the psychosocial factors in the latter approach, the medical practitioner can build a bond
with the patient and treat them as a whole. Social factors such as a patient's occupation play a huge
role in mental health. Occupations can cause stress on someone's body and mind, leading to mental
illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Knowing patients on a more personal level can strengthen
the outcome of their diagnosis and treatment.
There are two model approaches to patient interviewing in the medical field. The biomedical
interview approach, and the biopsychosocial interview approach. The biomedical approach focuses
only on the biological effects on health and medicine. This approach is faster and sees a higher
quantity of patients. According to Science The Need for a New Medical Model: A Challenge for
Biomedicine, the biomedical model, "...assumes disease to be fully accounted for by deviations
from the norm of measurable biological (somatic) variables" (Engel 130). The biopsychosocial
approach, on the other hand, focuses not only on the biological effects, but also the psychological
and social effects on health and medicine as well. This approach digs deeper into the patient's
history, uses more variables, and finds the source of the problem and solves it. According to the
article Reflections on a New Medical Cosmology, the biopsychosocial approach "...gives recognition
to the difficulties and distortions involved in framing qualitative issues, whether psychological or
social, in quantitative terms, and so provides a separation between those appropriately..." (Greaves
82). It is often seen that because the biomedical approach does not include psychological and social
factors, much information is left out, and the patient and medical professional cannot fully make a
connection with each other. It is important to form a trustworthy bond with patients so that you

The Biopsychosocial Model Essay
INTRODUCTION
"Don't treat the disease, treat the patient" [9]. The concept of health has seemed to become complex
in definition over the centuries as science improves. "Health is a complete state of physical, mental
and social well–being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity."–World Health Definition
of Health (1948) [9]
In order to understand health, different models or frameworks for thinking have been developed
which have been useful. The Biomedical model which evolved since the 19th century from Galen's
(Greek physician 200AD) concept of pathogen, focused on removing the disease/disability and not
on prevention or general well–being [9]. The Biopsychosocial model however, doesn't merely focus
on the physical state of...show more content...
It is reductionist because it reduces illness to low–level processes such as chemical imbalances,
pathogens, genetic predispositions and disorders. According to this model, individuals are not
responsible for illnesses caused by factors beyond their control and treatment should include
vaccination, surgery and the like which all aim to remove the cause of the illness. In this model of
practice, an individual can either be healthy or ill because there is no continuum. That a
psychological disorder can lead to an illness but there is no in–between. The biomedical view thus
identifies treatment of various parts with the ultimate goal of a cure. If success in this model is
defined as a cure, death is defined as ultimate failure, to be avoided at all cost. Patients whose
diseases cannot be "cured" are deemed as "incurable". [7]
The Biopsychosocial (BPS) model greatly differs because while the biomedical answers the main
question "why do people get sick?" the BPS also answers the question "why else do people get
sick?" [9] According to the BPS model, the human being is complex and must be understood as a
whole. That there is a relationship between body, mind and environment and that one aspect affects
the others. Health and illness are caused by multiple factors and have multiple effects, from the
biological or cellular level

Biopsychosocial Framework
Biopsychosocial Framework The biopsychosocial framework is a general model or framework
stating that the unavoidable interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, all
play a significant role in human functioning in the context of health. The biopsychosocial
framework is used to organise the biological, psychological, and sociocultural forces on human
development (David, et al., n.d) Middle Adulthood Middle age is the prime of life, many of the
major life events of middle adulthood, such as parenting and work, span several decades of one's
life. During this time, there are significant developmental events, such as changes in reproductive

Stress sometimes has long–term positive effects on well–being, studies differ as to whether this
increases or decreases with age Aldwin & Yancura (2010) The reaction to stress typically begins
when the review of the challenge is deemed to be threating, or an interpretation of loos. When this
review occurs, it can result in negative emotions which activate the sympathetic nervous system to
bring more energy to the body for a fight/flight response. A wide range of stressors can evoke
physiological responses, with implication on health across the life span, and may partially account
for the increase in individual health differences in later life (Almeida, et al. 2005). Research shows
that people who respond negatively to daily stressors are more susceptible to physical health impact
than people who respond positively. Access to elements such as education, income, chronic stressors
limit or enhance the possibilities and choices for managing stress. The reaction to stressors is
therefore influenced by sociodemographic, psychosocial, and other situational factors influence the
reaction to daily stressors. When exposed to daily stressors, older adults may respond differently to
stressors based on previous life experiences (Almeida, et al.

that the parents is asking this and not the client. The clinician would need to assess the client to

addition, trying to appease multiple peer groups, and family's expectations represent socio–cultural

Miss Ng. In this essay, I will be covering about her physical, cognitive, psychological and moral
development stages, myopia, and factors that will affect my clients' wellbeing.
Let me give a brief introduction of my client. She is primary 4 and her favourite hobbies are
playing the computer games, dancing and doing sports. She lives with her parents, grandparents,
younger sister and a maid at a 4 room HDB flat. Both her parents are working and they are
financially stable. It is essential for the family to be aware of Ng's development stages as they have to
know that she is growing up well and not with any obstructions.

The Biopsychosocial Model
Many would not consider the onset of a life threatening or terminal disease an aspect of crisis
intervention. Illness is an interesting topic because unlike drug addiction, if a person is terminal,
there is no cure. In addition, one must consider the dynamic when the person who becomes ill is the
primary earner in the home and the long–term recovery and/or emanate death not only affects the
sick but the family unit as well. Kanal (2011) begins this topic with the notion of the
"Biopsychosocial Model" (p. 267). In sum, this model supports people in crisis based on illness
from both a biological and psychological way. The author contends, that crisis looks different for
those who are sick. As stated, if the person has a number of responsibilities,

I am particularly interested in Biopsychosoical Therapy. (Myers) From what I have learned in
psychology courses in college, I feel like the best way to help people in marriage and family
therapy is to have a good approach to an individual, couple or family in order to have a positive
effect. Combining Biological, Psychological and Social Therapy is the best way to identify external
and internal issues in relationships and approach them with a successful outcome. In order to get to
the root of an unconscious issue, I can practice a form of Psychoanalysis, Psychodynamic,
Humanistic, Behavior or Cognitive Therapy. For example, with Psychoanalysis I can practice free

For example, with depression it's important to know what the symptoms and causes are that way
you can correctly identify and treat it, whether it's with medication or therapy. It's also important to
understand the biological basis of behavior and how it's described and defined to validate theories.
For example, knowing the anatomy of the brain and the purpose of each lobe and effects that they
have on behavior will help in therapy. Like the hypothalamus, it takes part in almost all aspects of
behavior. On the other hand, the Limbic System is involved in emotions, sexual behavior and
memory, etc. Knowing that neurotransmitters play an important part as well in biology and behavior
is crucial. For example, most behaviors are produced by groups of neurons. An example of small
molecule neurotransmitters is serotonin, which is synthesized from food and affects the regulation
of your mood. These are a few examples of the importance of having the knowledge necessary in
Biology that will help with approaches to different clients. (Kolb) Social Therapy is important too
because it includes the nurturing side of humans and how their behaviors and thoughts are
influenced. Is it, the person or their situation or both that cause a certain behavior? The Attribution
Theory explains this as internal dispositions and external situations that cause certain behaviors. For
example,

Knowledge is by no means subordinate when it comes to being a good doctor. There are those
who will say it is more important than anything else, what could possibly be more important? And
while it is true that knowing to perform the Allen's test or knowing that there is a separate
procedure for the anaesthesia of patients suffering from Myasthenia Gravis, could and has saved
many lives, that does not make one a good doctor. If a good doctor was simply defined as
someone who knew Gray's Anatomy from cover to cover then it wouldn't be long before the

This biomedical perspective focuses on the mechanism of a disease or condition and assumes that
the psychological and social factors are not essential to understanding and treating patients. A more
modern form of treatment is the biopsychosocial model. This model encompasses an array of
potential contributing factors to a patient's health problem and recognises that it is not always
simply an anatomical or physiological issue. The biopsychosocial model takes into account the
variable interaction of biological factors, psychological factors and social factors, all of which
must be fully assessed and given time in the treatment of the patient. Therefore, to fully treat a
patient it is not only necessary to have a knowledge of human biology, but also to be able to
comprehend and empathise with the patient's psychological and social state, the be able to visualise
what they are going through and adjust your treatment accordingly. In order to be a good doctor you
mustn't neglect two thirds of your patient's condition, two thirds which I believe cannot be learned

question is what would be the proper approach to her condition? There are two options that this
paper will discuss: The biomedical approach and the biopsychosocial approach. The typical
response in a normal setting is a biomedical model, or otherwise known as the approach that doctors
use. The other option is the biopsychosocial approach which looks at the patient as a whole. This

variety of reasons why a patient may experience Delirium, including the presence of infection within
their body (NHS, 2015a). A main symptom of chest infection can be the feeling of confusion or
disorientation (NHS, 2016).
Over the period of admission Mr Smith was observed to have loss of appetite which can have a
direct impact on his glucose levels as he is diabetic and generally impact the rate of recovery from
the infection as nutrients such as Protein is needed to maintain the individual's health (Snooks,

the patient may not feel like drinking fluids and this can put them at risk of becoming dehydrated,
which can lead to fatigue (BMJ, 2016). An intake of sufficient liquids can promote the lungs to keep
the secretions thin and easy to cough up. Also, sufficient fluid uptake can prevent constipation (NHS

It is generally accepted within healthcare that to understand mental health we must adopt the
biopsychosocial model. This model assumes that an interdependent relationship exists between
biological, psychological and social factors which are involved in all aspects of mental health
(Toates, 2010, p. 14). To be true to the model research must be holistic and not investigate the factors
in isolation.
Key terms will be defined and a review of the research in the literature will be performed to assess
the extent to which it adheres to the biopsychosocial model. The conclusion will take an overview of
these findings and determine that most research is not truly biopsychosocial and attempt to explain
why.

96–98) assessed a computerised CBT treatment for mild depression in an RCT and found a
statistically significant improvement in symptoms measured using the BDI.
We also start to see qualitative research in the investigation of psychological factors. Case studies
such as 'Little Albert' by Watson and Rayner (1920) in McLannahan (2010, pp. 107–108) was
purported to have demonstrated the acquisition of a phobia in a small child through classical
conditioning (although this is not accepted by all psychologists). Although controversial by today's
standards it has had a long–lasting impact. Another case study by the Health Experience Research
Group (2010) examining the role of stress in the development of depression and anxiety in a 43 year
old female is reported in Datta (2010, pp.35–36).
Clinical interviews were used to assess neurosis and mental illness in the population e.g. Adult
Psychiatric Morbidity in England, 2007: results of a household survey (McManus et al., 2009) in
Datta (2010, pp. 30–31). The Clinical Interview Schedule – Revised scale (CIS–R) measures the
symptoms of mental illness and maps them onto recognised illnesses.
The social dimension appears to be less thoroughly researched. Various studies have shown the
benefits of strong social relationships to well–being such as Argyle (2001), Larson (1990), Wheeler
et al. (1983) and Diener and Seligman (2002) in Boniwell and Rostron (2010, p. 130).

Biopsychosocial Essay

  • 1. Biopsychosocial Model Of Mental Health The biopsychosocial model is a holistic approach to mental health. This view focuses on not only the individual's mental condition, but also on the wider factors that interact to influence mental health. The use of the biopsychosocial model uses both internal and external factors to evaluate mental health. Internal factors include biological factors such as genetics, response to medication and physiological response to stress, as well as psychological factors including thoughts, ways of thinking and personality traits. External factors are also included in the model through social factors, including interpersonal relationships, access to health care and social support (Grivas & Letch, 2017). It is this interaction of biological,...show more content... In everyday life, anxiety is an adaptive response to deal with short–term threatening, dangerous or emergency situations (Grivas & Letch, 2017). This can temporarily activate the sympathetic nervous system and the fight–flight–freeze response, causing physiological symptoms of dizziness, trembling, shortness of breath and increased heart rate. Stress and anxiety may be seen in other mental disorders, such as specific phobia, but are not considered mental disorders. Specific phobia is a phobia "marked by persistent fear or anticipation of a specific situation in which exposure to the phobic stimulus almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response" (GrГ¶s & Antony, 2006). Specific phobias can be categorised into four main types ,animal type, natural environment type, blood–injection–injury type and situation type. Causes of Specific Phobia: There are several causes of specific phobia, in all biological, psychological and social components. One social cause of specific phobia is cognitive bias, resulting in catastrophic thinking. A cognitive bias is a way of thinking that involves errors of judgement and faulty decision making (Grivas & Letch, 2017). A type of cognitive bias is catastrophic thinking, a thought process where the individual predicts the worst possible outcome if faced with a phobic stimulus. Illegal drugs have cost the United States approximately 600 billion in total costs to the economy including lost wages. The biopsychosocial model is a combination of biology (body) and social, psychological (mind, and community (social). The biopsychosocial model provided a holistic approach to medicine. The biopsychosocial approach systematically considers biological, psychological and social factors and their complex interactions understanding healthcare, illness and health care delivery. It was nice to express the stress I had coping with school and a toddler. I enjoyed reading my classmate's posts, plus learning about their stressors, helped me to understand who they are a little better. I enjoyed knowing most of us had similar coping strategies. It gave me a sense of comaradity, because you always feel you're the only one going through difficulties and no one will understand. I liked learning about the biopsychosocial approach from a social influence point of view. I am more aware of each perspective and what role they place in analyzing human behaviour and why each is valuable to science. Overall week one topic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Biopsychosocial Spiritual Framework In the profession of social work, a social worker will encounter numerous clients who all have unique and varying degrees of experiences and problems that they either actively are choosing to work on or are being mandated by a third party to seek help. Because each new client presents different challenges and issues for the social worker, they must have a foundation on which to rely to better understand where their client is coming from and what factors may be playing a role in that client's life. Theory provides frameworks for social workers to begin to understand the depth of their client's needs. These frameworks help provide a foundation for social work practice. How Theory Plays a Role in Social Work Practice Theory helps explain...show more content... This is vitally important when working with victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Many times, intervention is associated with getting the victim out of the abusive situation, but those who aim to help often fail to see the multiple factors that may prevent the victim from leaving. By looking at clients affected by intimate partner violence through a biopsychosocial spiritual framework, social workers acknowledge and address multiple aspects of the individual's life that are influencing whether they stay or go. Research by Nurius and Macy shows that "each individual appraises and copes with the threat of IPV in a unique biopsychosocial [spiritual] context" (2010, p. 1068). Their research with female victims of IPV in Washington shows that women who are presented with same or similar stressors may react in a different manner based on their interpretation of said stressor (Nurius and Macy, 2010, p. 1068). Using this framework, they found that women who claimed to have strong social support systems showed less incidents of depression than those who reported having poor social support systems (Nurius and Macy, 2010, p. 1080). The levels and types of violence experienced by these women varied, but the strong social support was one piece that linked these women together. Similarly, in a study conducted by Drumm et al (2013), the researchers found that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Mental Health and Occupations Aspasia Manettas Mercy College October 2017 Abstract Two types of medical interviews are the biomedical approach, involving only biological factors, and the biopsychosocial approach that includes both psychosocial factors and biological factors. Because of the psychosocial factors in the latter approach, the medical practitioner can build a bond with the patient and treat them as a whole. Social factors such as a patient's occupation play a huge role in mental health. Occupations can cause stress on someone's body and mind, leading to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Knowing patients on a more personal level can strengthen the outcome of their diagnosis and treatment. There are two model approaches to patient interviewing in the medical field. The biomedical interview approach, and the biopsychosocial interview approach. The biomedical approach focuses only on the biological effects on health and medicine. This approach is faster and sees a higher quantity of patients. According to Science The Need for a New Medical Model: A Challenge for Biomedicine, the biomedical model, "...assumes disease to be fully accounted for by deviations from the norm of measurable biological (somatic) variables" (Engel 130). The biopsychosocial approach, on the other hand, focuses not only on the biological effects, but also the psychological and social effects on health and medicine as well. This approach digs deeper into the patient's history, uses more variables, and finds the source of the problem and solves it. According to the article Reflections on a New Medical Cosmology, the biopsychosocial approach "...gives recognition to the difficulties and distortions involved in framing qualitative issues, whether psychological or social, in quantitative terms, and so provides a separation between those appropriately..." (Greaves 82). It is often seen that because the biomedical approach does not include psychological and social factors, much information is left out, and the patient and medical professional cannot fully make a connection with each other. It is important to form a trustworthy bond with patients so that you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Biopsychosocial Model Essay INTRODUCTION "Don't treat the disease, treat the patient" [9]. The concept of health has seemed to become complex in definition over the centuries as science improves. "Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well–being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity."–World Health Definition of Health (1948) [9] In order to understand health, different models or frameworks for thinking have been developed which have been useful. The Biomedical model which evolved since the 19th century from Galen's (Greek physician 200AD) concept of pathogen, focused on removing the disease/disability and not on prevention or general well–being [9]. The Biopsychosocial model however, doesn't merely focus on the physical state of...show more content... It is reductionist because it reduces illness to low–level processes such as chemical imbalances, pathogens, genetic predispositions and disorders. According to this model, individuals are not responsible for illnesses caused by factors beyond their control and treatment should include vaccination, surgery and the like which all aim to remove the cause of the illness. In this model of practice, an individual can either be healthy or ill because there is no continuum. That a psychological disorder can lead to an illness but there is no in–between. The biomedical view thus identifies treatment of various parts with the ultimate goal of a cure. If success in this model is defined as a cure, death is defined as ultimate failure, to be avoided at all cost. Patients whose diseases cannot be "cured" are deemed as "incurable". [7] The Biopsychosocial (BPS) model greatly differs because while the biomedical answers the main question "why do people get sick?" the BPS also answers the question "why else do people get sick?" [9] According to the BPS model, the human being is complex and must be understood as a whole. That there is a relationship between body, mind and environment and that one aspect affects the others. Health and illness are caused by multiple factors and have multiple effects, from the biological or cellular level Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Biopsychosocial Framework Biopsychosocial Framework The biopsychosocial framework is a general model or framework stating that the unavoidable interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of health. The biopsychosocial framework is used to organise the biological, psychological, and sociocultural forces on human development (David, et al., n.d) Middle Adulthood Middle age is the prime of life, many of the major life events of middle adulthood, such as parenting and work, span several decades of one's life. During this time, there are significant developmental events, such as changes in reproductive capacity, developing expertise in well–exercised areas, and transitions in family...show more content... Stress sometimes has long–term positive effects on well–being, studies differ as to whether this increases or decreases with age Aldwin & Yancura (2010) The reaction to stress typically begins when the review of the challenge is deemed to be threating, or an interpretation of loos. When this review occurs, it can result in negative emotions which activate the sympathetic nervous system to bring more energy to the body for a fight/flight response. A wide range of stressors can evoke physiological responses, with implication on health across the life span, and may partially account for the increase in individual health differences in later life (Almeida, et al. 2005). Research shows that people who respond negatively to daily stressors are more susceptible to physical health impact than people who respond positively. Access to elements such as education, income, chronic stressors limit or enhance the possibilities and choices for managing stress. The reaction to stressors is therefore influenced by sociodemographic, psychosocial, and other situational factors influence the reaction to daily stressors. When exposed to daily stressors, older adults may respond differently to stressors based on previous life experiences (Almeida, et al. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Biopsychosocial Assessment: A Case Study This counselor sees that the areas of multicultural competence would be looking at the child's background and family dynamics through the biopsychosocial assessment. Then this counselor sees that the parents is asking this and not the client. The clinician would need to assess the client to make sure this is his choice and not the parents' choice. Then the clinician would need to address the religion aspect not to the client or the parents, just to himself to find out more about that type of religion. The clinician would need cultural training on the customs in Central Africa, especially the part that the client is from. Let me give a brief introduction of my client. She is primary 4 and her favourite hobbies are playing the computer games, dancing and doing sports. She lives with her parents, grandparents, younger sister and a maid at a 4 room HDB flat. Both her parents are working and they are financially stable. We asked our client whether she would take drugs if her friends persuaded her and her answer was that she would not as it is very bad for health. • 13. The Biopsychosocial Model Many would not consider the onset of a life threatening or terminal disease an aspect of crisis intervention. Illness is an interesting topic because unlike drug addiction, if a person is terminal, there is no cure. In addition, one must consider the dynamic when the person who becomes ill is the primary earner in the home and the long–term recovery and/or emanate death not only affects the sick but the family unit as well. Kanal (2011) begins this topic with the notion of the "Biopsychosocial Model" (p. 267). In sum, this model supports people in crisis based on illness from both a biological and psychological way. The author contends, that crisis looks different for those who are sick. As stated, if the person has a number of responsibilities, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

(Myers) From what I have learned in psychology courses in college, I feel like the best way to help people in marriage and family therapy is to have a good approach to an individual, couple or family in order to have a positive effect. Combining Biological, Psychological and Social Therapy is the best way to identify external and internal issues in relationships and approach them with a successful outcome. In order to get to the root of an unconscious issue, I can practice a form of Psychoanalysis, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Behavior or Cognitive Therapy. For example, with Psychoanalysis I can practice free association, where the client can open up about past events if they're...show more content... For example, with depression it's important to know what the symptoms and causes are that way you can correctly identify and treat it, whether it's with medication or therapy. It's also important to understand the biological basis of behavior and how it's described and defined to validate theories. For example, knowing the anatomy of the brain and the purpose of each lobe and effects that they have on behavior will help in therapy. Like the hypothalamus, it takes part in almost all aspects of behavior. On the other hand, the Limbic System is involved in emotions, sexual behavior and memory, etc. Knowing that neurotransmitters play an important part as well in biology and behavior is crucial. For example, most behaviors are produced by groups of neurons. An example of small molecule neurotransmitters is serotonin, which is synthesized from food and affects the regulation of your mood. These are a few examples of the importance of having the knowledge necessary in Biology that will help with approaches to different clients. (Kolb) Social Therapy is important too because it includes the nurturing side of humans and how their behaviors and thoughts are influenced. Is it, the person or their situation or both that cause a certain behavior? The Attribution Theory explains this as internal dispositions and external situations that cause certain behaviors. There are those who will say it is more important than anything else, what could possibly be more important? And while it is true that knowing to perform the Allen's test or knowing that there is a separate procedure for the anaesthesia of patients suffering from Myasthenia Gravis, could and has saved many lives, that does not make one a good doctor. If a good doctor was simply defined as someone who knew Gray's Anatomy from cover to cover then it wouldn't be long before the industry was automated. This biomedical perspective focuses on the mechanism of a disease or condition and assumes that the psychological and social factors are not essential to understanding and treating patients. A more modern form of treatment is the biopsychosocial model. This model encompasses an array of potential contributing factors to a patient's health problem and recognises that it is not always simply an anatomical or physiological issue. The biopsychosocial model takes into account the variable interaction of biological factors, psychological factors and social factors, all of which must be fully assessed and given time in the treatment of the patient. Therefore, to fully treat a patient it is not only necessary to have a knowledge of human biology, but also to be able to comprehend and empathise with the patient's psychological and social state, the be able to visualise what they are going through and adjust your treatment accordingly. Now imagine this woman with a life altering disease. Now the question is what would be the proper approach to her condition? There are two options that this paper will discuss: The biomedical approach and the biopsychosocial approach. The typical response in a normal setting is a biomedical model, or otherwise known as the approach that doctors use. According to records Mr Smith displayed signs of confusion when he was admitted and continues to show signs of it .He was reviewed by Psychiatric In–reach Liaison Service (PRILS) at the ward, it was reported that Mr Smith sees people in the walls of the hospital ward and his home .There are a variety of reasons why a patient may experience Delirium, including the presence of infection within their body (NHS, 2015a). A main symptom of chest infection can be the feeling of confusion or disorientation (NHS, 2016). Over the period of admission Mr Smith was observed to have loss of appetite which can have a direct impact on his glucose levels as he is diabetic and generally impact the rate of recovery from the infection as nutrients such as Protein is needed to maintain the individual's health (Snooks, 2009). Furthermore, malnutrition can put an elderly patient at higher risk of Pneumonia. Similarly, the patient may not feel like drinking fluids and this can put them at risk of becoming dehydrated, which can lead to fatigue (BMJ, 2016). This model assumes that an interdependent relationship exists between biological, psychological and social factors which are involved in all aspects of mental health (Toates, 2010, p. 14). To be true to the model research must be holistic and not investigate the factors in isolation. We also start to see qualitative research in the investigation of psychological factors. Case studies such as 'Little Albert' by Watson and Rayner (1920) in McLannahan (2010, pp. 107–108) was purported to have demonstrated the acquisition of a phobia in a small child through classical conditioning (although this is not accepted by all psychologists). Although controversial by today's standards it has had a long–lasting impact. Another case study by the Health Experience Research Group (2010) examining the role of stress in the development of depression and anxiety in a 43 year old female is reported in Datta (2010, pp.35–36). Clinical interviews were used to assess neurosis and mental illness in the population e.g. Adult Psychiatric Morbidity in England, 2007: results of a household survey (McManus et al., 2009) in Datta (2010, pp. 30–31). The Clinical Interview Schedule – Revised scale (CIS–R) measures the symptoms of mental illness and maps them onto recognised illnesses. The social dimension appears to be less thoroughly researched. Various studies have shown the benefits of strong social relationships to well–being such as Argyle (2001), Larson (1990), Wheeler et al. (1983) and Diener and Seligman (2002) in Boniwell and Rostron (2010, p. 130). The psychosocial consequences of childhood Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Urbina (2014) discussed the benefits of using psychological testing to help create a treatment plan for a client. The biopsychosocial and psychological testing is beneficial to completing a successful treatment plan for Mr. Jones.
