The first building on the site was a 13th century fortress that grew into Tre Kronor Palace. In the late 16th century, work transformed it into a Renaissance style palace. In 1690, it was decided to rebuild in Baroque style after a fire destroyed much of it in 1697. Reconstruction and additions continued for over 60 more years, with the royal family moving in once the southwest, southeast, and northeast wings were finished in the 1740s. Today the palace is guarded by the royal guard Högvakten, which dates back to the early 16th century.
