1. Cyanotypes The Photo II students explored the theme of preservation through cyanotypes, or sunprints. This alternative process combined the use of high contrast negatives and non-traditional surfaces like fabric and pages from old books.
2. Cyanotypes Using their research notes on cyanotypes as well as historical and contemporary examples of this alternative process, the students worked in teams while playing Photo Feud , a photography review game in the similar vein as the game show Family Feud.
3. Cyanotypes Students like Lauren used pages from journals to research cyanotype artists, and create sketches for their cyanotype project.
4. Cyanotypes After I demonstrated how to prepare a surface with light-sensitive cyanotype chemicals, Sarah and Kelly (left) made a photogram-style cyanotype. Getting comfortable with the process of exposing their coated surface, Emily (below) used her ortho-litho negatives to make her cyanotypes.
5. Cyanotypes Exposing their cyanotypes in the sun, Taylor and Olivia (left) washed their cloths in the sink, revealing the high -contrast image. To enhance the blues on the canvas surface, Erin (right) agitated the tray filled with water and hydrogen peroxide.
6. Cyanotypes Heather (left) and Lawson (right) worked diligently on affixing their cyanotype fabrics onto their frames through sewing and hammering.
7. Cyanotypes Sarah (left) created a stencil for a photogram-style cyanotype on a shirt while Kagan (right) used a page from a book and an ortho-litho negative for her project.
