Hand Colored Photographs
1. Hand-Colored Photographs Photography 3 students revisited hand-coloring techniques but with a twist! Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Four Marilyns , we explored four color relationships (primary, secondary, tertiary, and monochromatic) with Marshalls Oils and theme of emphasis.
2. Hand-Colored Photographs While discussing with the students on the four color relationships, I showed them my example of an abstracted painting of a bass player (above). Dividing a photograph into four sections, Jason used tempera paint to abstract his photograph (right).
3. Hand-Colored Photographs (right) Elle demonstrated how to use Marshall’s Oils colored pencils to blend colors. (left) After students made enlarged quad-color relationship paintings from one of their photographs, I reviewed the hand-coloring process and how emphasis was achieved through color placement.
4. Hand-Colored Photographs Students had three ninety minute class periods to complete their projects, layering and overlapping colors to achieve emphasis.
5. Hand-Colored Photographs Students like Jenn (above) and Kelly (right) layered Marshall’s Oils over the course of three class periods to achieve rich colors and depict the four color relationships.
