many causes of suicide. Remembering my friend Mark Anthony Dennis
Cunanan Plunder made me think of the endless cycle of cruelty that led
him into taking his own life still hurts me. It felt like I’ve lost something so
precious.
Three years ago, Mark Anthony Dennis Cunanan Plunder was still alive. He
was simply “Den Den” to me. But during that time, something changed –the
den den who became so dear to me was strong and brave; a person who is
so secure of himself. Remembering those times made me wonder how
other people deal with what my friend had gone through. How was it that
they were able to endure the hurts that my friend could not?
He had been bullied for as long as I could remember. Back then he could
still pass it off as child’s play. Having Plunder as a family name is weird
after all, especially when your name and your personality don’t match. If he
were as bad as his bad name connoted, then trouble would really come in.
Unfortunately, den den’s family name was dragged into a really bad
situation. He became the town’s treasurer, and was framed for something
he did not really do. By virtue of his last name alone, he was accused of
plundering the town’s finances. Since he was the treasurer, the blame was

2. mostly on him. The issue became much more intense on my dear friend’s
part because people somehow connected the situation to his last name.
This issue spread all throughout the town, and even reached the nearby
towns. Even people who benefited from my friend’s charity events turned
on him. As the issue worsened, I had not realized that the worry and hurt
from my then strong den den had been corrupting his very heart and mind,
slowly breaking his once-strong soul. It was then that he totally gave up.
That same year, I lost a dear friend; I lost a then role model. Three years
have passed, but I could still feel the ache deep within my very core,
especially lately after hearing a news that had struck my ears –the antibullying law has already been passed. I have conflicting emotions
regarding this. On the one hand this will be good for the people presently
experiencing different types of bullying acts; but for me, this is kind of
unfair. Why wasn’t it passed three years ago?
Well, I know that even if I ranted, he wouldn’t return. Just for this time,
hopefully, this law would take a stance on the bullying issues. No more
lives will be taken away just because of so much self-grief. Yes, hopefully,
there would be no more Mark Anthony Dennis Cunanan Plunder suicide
cases after this. Maybe, just maybe, the anti bullying law is not that late
after all. Well, let’s see…
