The facilitator led art activities with 13 children ages 5-12 at a youth ministry. The goals were to encourage interaction, imagination, and focus. Two activities were done - paper weaving and making a dog face out of leaves. For weaving, children cut paper and wove strips through. For the dog, they arranged leaves and added eyes/buttons. Both were enjoyed, though keeping younger ones focused on weaving was difficult. The facilitator received positive feedback and decided to volunteer regularly at the ministry.
2. WHERE?
I did my facilitation with -------- Youth Ministry.
They endeavour to promote a holistic approach to development of young people,
by providing – Religious, Spiritual, Emotional, Intellectual, physical and Social Needs.
3. WHO?
● I did my facilitation with children from the ages of 5-12.
● Kids varied in nationalities and all came from different backgrounds.
● I had been made aware that some kids have social problems e.g. ADHD,
behavioural problems.
● I did my facilitation with 13 children, with the help of 3 adults who volunteer at the
youth ministry.
4. AIMS OF MY ACTIVITIES
As I had been told that some of the children are quite shy, I wanted all the children to
interact with each other and for all the children to get involved in the activities.
Imagination: To encourage the children to use their imagination and to make their
finished products unique to them. Also to encourage them to be creative throughout
the facilitation by getting them to share ideas of what they think would make the
activities better.
To keep all the children interested and occupied so that there would be no bad
behaviour throughout the facilitation.
6. WHAT WE USED?
Scissors
Glue
Ruler
Coloured Paper
7. METHOD
Have the child choose which colour paper they would like to do the weaving on.
Using proper measurements they had to cut lines down through the piece of paper.
They choose whatever colours strips of paper they wished to weave through the
paper.
With the help of the volunteers, we showed each child individually how to weave the
strings of paper through their original piece of paper.
10. WHAT WE USED?
Sycamore & Beech leaves
Coloured paper
Buttons
Eyes
Glue
Marker
11. METHOD
I gave each of the children 1 sycamore leaf and 3 beech leaves.
After they stuck these on a coloured piece of paper I gave them each a button and
2 eyes.
From looking at the template they completed the task.
I got each of the children to name their dog and to stand up and show the rest of the
children their finished piece and tell them what name they had chose.
13. CHALLENGES/CHANGES
As I had previously organised to divide the group in 2, putting the younger group
doing the dogs face and the older one’s doing the paper weaving but since all the
children wanted to both activities I did both activities with all the group.
I found it difficult to teach the activities to such a wide age range, the younger
children found the paper weaving hard whereas the older ones enjoyed it.
The children really enjoyed adding different aspects to their dogs face so it would
have been nice if I had brought more materials so this would have been possible.
Due to some children having trouble concentrating and sitting for a long period of
time, It was difficult to keep them focused on the tasks.
14. EVALUATION
It was very successful, All end products looked really well.
All the children seemed to enjoy both activities, especially the dogs face as they all
shared stories about their own dogs around the table.
When the younger children struggled with the weaving the older children all took it
upon themselves to help them.
I’m glad I had asked the woman running the ministry for advise on what activities to
do beforehand as it was clear they all shared a love of animals so they loved making
the dog out of leaves and also they loved the challenge of the paper weaving.
15. EVALUATION
I had been told that the children love to bring things home to show their parents so
they all seemed proud showing their parents when they came to collect them.
Although there was a few occasions where some children became restless and
started to distract the other children but between myself and the volunteers we
managed to settle them again.
I got really good feedback from the woman running the youth ministry saying the
children seemed to really enjoy the activities.
I really enjoyed the whole activity and love the work that the youth ministry do so I
have decided to start volunteering there.
