Approaches to Childhood learning – Class activity Record Sheet
After every class Activity write into the record sheet. Add photos throughout the record. 15 records min required for portfolio. Add lots of images to illustrate your understanding.
Name______ A N
Date:
12-11-14
Week number:
9
Attended:
Yes
Name and image of the Activity
Blow painting
Materials used:
Drinking straws, paint, water, paint tray, paint brush, sheets of paper
Time plan:
Set up it took five minutes and the activity itself took between 20 to 30 minutes
Room and/or equipment requirements: four desks and chairs, paint tray
General Aim of activity – What will the final outcome be? ie. ‘To make an aeroplane with cardboard’ box.
To create patterns in your own way and to explore the different colours mixing together.
Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – What will be learned by doing the activity? Ie.
 To use fine motor skills using the straw
 Encourages exploration
 Hand and eye coordination
 A bit of science e.g. using air to make things move
Steps for making or doing activity:
Materials used in activity
Image of blowing through the straw
Using a paint brush to mix the water downed paint
Using different colours
Example of blow painting activity conducted
How will the child/ren benefit from the activity?
 This activity can also be a group activity so the children can work together as a team and learn how to share.
 Learning their colours.
 Using their imagination ( what can they see on the page)
Age group/s: (development level)
All ages e.g. kind of paint suitable for children and the caution about the straw, there’s a trick you can puncture a hole near the top so the paint won’t go into the child’s mouth if the child blew in instead of out.
How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design
 As mentioned above the children can work in groups and they can pick out their own colours.
How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside?
 Outside on a dry day we could make a big square of pieces of paper suck together, big enough for everyone to part take in the activity. This will involve us kneeling/sitting on the ground.
Simplify this activity:
 Prepared the materials
 Gave out a piece of paper and straw to each person.
 Water downed the paint
 Blew through the straw to create an image
 End product patterns and different colours
Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg whites instead’
 Use ink instead of water downed paint.
 Bring the activity outside
 Include extras such as beads and eyes.
The Learning outcomes linked to Aistear
Exploring and thinking Identity and Belonging Well-being Communicating
Eg: Aim 1;4,5,6
Aim 3,5
Aim 4,5
Aim 2,4
Other curriculums: Montessori, HiScope..

Safety concerns? If any
 A child sucking up the paint instead of blowing out.
Could the activity link to an external activity/group/ outing? ‘Visit to a farm/forest to see/do….’
 A visit to the park or forest can give the children an idea or an image of what’s around them such as branches on the trees and put their images and ideas in class when doing blow painting.
Extensions for the activity: Could science, geography, history, culture, literacy, maths etc, be incorporated into to the activity? How? What changes would you make?
 Maybe write their name on the piece of paper and let them blow paint by following the letters which relates to literacy.
Interactions with children:
 By asking questions such as how can I get the paint to move across the paper?
 What are you creating?
 What do you see in your blow painting?
Problem solving element?
 If the children were putting the straw too far away from the paper they may get frustrated because nothing is happening. I would inform them that if you put it close it will work.
 If the children found it hard to blow through the straw there’s a way to solve that is by cutting the straws shorter which helps as not so much effort has to be put into blowing.
 If the paint was too thick and not water downed enough to resolve the problem by adding more water.
Evaluation of activity: What did think of the activity?
I was nervous about doing the activity because I didn’t do before but this activity stood out for me because I thought children would really enjoy this activity and it is fun and encourages their development e.g. hand/eye coordination or learning colours. I was worried about using paint just encase it didn’t spread across the page and it would be too thick but it worked out perfect it was actually cool and colourful to do. It also didn’t require much materials and inexpensive. But overall the girls enjoyed the activity they were surprised with the outcome and it does look nice.

Summary of your personal learning in points (at least 4) from doing the activity;
 Doing the actual activity seeing what it was like to do.
 That you can water down ordinary paint
 It can be done in a group or individually
 Hand coordination is important when doing this activity
