Case Study
1. CASE STUDIES
Project: CountyCouncil Highway Repairs
The problem:
Thisroad, edgedbya streamto one side, wasbeingerodedasa result
of the streambankhavingbeenundercutbywinterhighwaterlevels.
The resultingdamage wasvarioussectionsof the bankbeingwashed
away,takingthe road surface withit.
The road was graduallybecomingnarrower,forcingvehiclestouse the
otherside of the road, makingitincreasinglydangeroustouse.
Local residents,farmersandheavyservice vehicles,such asmilk
tankersservicingthe farms,were findingitdifficulttouse thissection
of the road.
The area of damage measuredapproximately1mhighby33m long.
The solution:
One solutionwouldhave beengabionbaskets. Howeverthiswasdeemedunsuitableforvarious
reasons,includingthe significantexcavationrequirements,cost,time toconstructandthe fact that
large transportand equipmentwouldbe requiredonsite,wherespace wasalreadylimitedasa
resultof the erosion.
The council heardabout the Deltaloksystemanddecidedthisprojectrepresentedthe ideal
opportunityforthemtotrial this.
Installationand observations:
The firsttwo rowsof DeltalokBagswere laidbelow the normal water
level andthese were filledwithgranularsoil material toaidfiltration
and secure the base of the structure.
The additional rowsof bagswere filledwithasoil/sandmix andgrass
seed.
The structure wasthentoppedoff witha soil roadside verge and
seeded.
The results:
The time it tookfor the Deltalokbuildwas
considerablyquickerthanalternative,conventional
erosioncontrol methods.
The stream hasnow beenreroutedbackonto its
normal course and awayfrom the roadside by
rebuildingthe streambankwiththe Deltaloksystem.
2. The outcome is a green,vegetated,natural-lookingstreambank, restoredtoitsformerglorywithout
any evidence of work havingbeencarriedout. All achieved inaveryshort space of time.
The client, contractor, local residentsandroadusersare all veryhappywiththe endresult.
