Life Science Chapt1 2

 1. 1. Life Science Chapter 1 Spring 06’
 2. 2. Biology The study of living things Science is the study of the universe. Biology is the study of living things. Make a list of ten living things, then get with a partner and come up with a list of twenty. Put your names on the list and turn them in.
 3. 3. ??Questions??

Asking questions is a vital part of science. Without questions there would be no quests for answers.

 4. 4. Experiment- A special kind of test to get information

Experiments come in many forms. People do informal experiments everyday. Have you ever tested to types of gum? Which one keeps its flavor the longest? Which one gives the best bubble?

Scientists use observations and experiments to test their ideas, they collect information and look for answers to questions

 5. 5. Theory-an idea that explains something based on repeated scientific observations and experiments

Scientists test theories to see if they are true or false. When an idea has been tested over and over and still seems to hold true the idea becomes a theory.

The theory of natural selection has proven itself true over and over yet it is still a theory.

 6. 6. Law-a theory that has passed many tests

A law is usually accepted by most scientists as true. The description of how gravity works is an example of scientific law. The Universal Law of Gravitation is an example of a law.

 7. 7. The Scientific Method-a set of steps used to find answers to questions
 8. 8. Hypothesis-a possible answer to a scientific question

An educated guess

Once you have a question you must venture a guess as to what the answer is to that question. You then test your answer for correctness. This is called an educated guess because you use what you know to look for the answer.

 9. 9. Control-the part of the experiment that is kept constant

The control is the part that the scientist compares the experiment outcome to. It is the one part of the experiment that stays the same. It is a part of the experiment that you already know about. Think of it as the average or normal-not manipulated or changed part of the experiment.

 10. 10. Microbiology-The study of living things too small to be seen with the eye Genetics- The study of how genes are passed from one generation to another Zoology- The study of animals Botany- The study of plants Biology Ecology- The study of how all living things relate to one another and their world
 11. 11. Botany

Some botanists may work for local or national parks.

They also may work for nurseries or greenhouses.

Biologists who study botany may work with plants from a certain part of the world such as the Rain Forest

 12. 12. Zoology

Zoologists may study a specific animals or types of animals-exotic such as snakes and elephants, or common such as dogs and cats

Many zoologists work in zoos or aquariums

Some become veterinarians

Some become the Crocodile Hunter!!

 13. 13. Genetics

This is the study of how characteristics are passed down from generation to generation.

Some geneticists work in a lab

Others may work in a hospital or with doctors

Many people are seeing genetic counselors before they have children to see what those children may be like.

 14. 14. Microbiology

Microbiologists usually work in a lab

They can work for hospitals or for private companies

They work with living things that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Micro -means “small”

 15. 15. Ecology

Ecologists work for government agencies or businesses

Ecologists do a lot of their work outside

Ecologists study the relationships between living things and how they interact with the nonliving world.

 16. 16. Review

Biology is the study of all LIVING things

All science starts with questions. Answers to these questions are tested with experiments

Scientists today use the scientific method to study problems and answer questions. A hypothesis is a possible answer to a scientific question

 17. 17. Review Continued

Some scientific ideas have not yet been proven. These ideas are called theories. Scientists test theories to find out how well they explain things. Theories are different from facts.

Most biologists specialize in a specific field. Some fields of biology include-botany, zoology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology

 18. 18. Complete the review on pages 14 & 15 including the critical thinking
