Responsible Travel
Responsible travel or tourism has been defined
as "a better place to travel and a better place
to live." It means travelers are welcome but
also share concerns about a place they visit -
just like they would at home.
It might seem strange to consider travel that
needs to be titled "responsible." But years of
tourism around the world have often created
unintended havoc on those places. For
example, as travelers we require US standards
like air conditioning and ice that may mean
directing energy resources to tourist zones
rather than a local community, importing
water and costly equipment, and creating
more waste than a community can handle.
Responsible travel takes those limits into
consideration, often proactively working with
a local community to either lessen the
negative impacts or supporting community
efforts and improvements. Responsible travel
is about the attitude you take and the choices
you make when traveling - to respect and
benefit local people, their culture and
economy, as well as the environment.
Local Flavor advocates taking public transport
when possible, staying and eating in small-
scale, local establishments, traveling in small
groups, and spreading the word of sustainable
tourism wherever we can.
Responsible travel is mindful travel.
Conversations
Welcome to the new Experience Local
Flavor quarterly newsletter of responsible
travel. You'll read about travelers exploring
the world respectfully and making local
connections wherever they go.
This issue explores mindfulness and travel.
Travel is a precious thing, often guarded by
time and budgetary constraints, an activity
to treasure and savor to the best of one's
ability. Mindfulness is being wholly present
in the moment. It can help let go of the
problems and anxieties involved in travel
and even create better memories of our
lives.
The Pop Up Museum of Travel
We each bear a personal responsibility for
making our own memories, so please join
Local Flavor for Treasures Behind the
Trinkets: What's Your Story? a pop up
museum of travel March 20th at the Black
Dog Cafe' and Wine Bar in St. Paul. The
pop up museum is curated by the people
who show up. Sign in at 3:30 and the
museum will take place between
4:00-6:00pm. Bring your trinket, we’ll give
you a label for it, and then share your travel
story with other travel curators.
All types of travelers - vagabonds,
trekkers, seekers, adventurers, gypsies,
nomads, day-trippers, drifters and
strangers - are welcome here.
