School-to-work
Transition Challenges

Steps
1. Understood about empathy map generation and interview
questions was prepared.
2. Interviewed a senior chemical engineer about his experience in
handling fresh grads and interns that was put under him.
3. Interview data was processed and put into Empathy Map.
4. Problem statement was crafted.

1. “When entering the workforce, you
should think like engineer, and abandon
your student mindset.”
2. “Make change you want first, and make
friends later.”
3. “Get to know everyone in the workplace
including those from different department
so you won’t feel awkward later.”
4. “All engineers that enters workforce has to
know the three thing to do his work
properly; which is man, machine, and
materials.”
5. “Getting to know of machines and
materials is to make sure you won’t lose
face to your subordinate.”
6. “Have lunch with them.”
7. “Be confident.”
8. “What you learn in class is totally
different than what is practiced in
industry.”
9. “Learn to communicate with people of
different background and expertise.”

1. Graduate need to be articulate.
2. Local graduates are less confident.
3. Engineering graduate in particular
lacks social skills.
4. Need more exposure about working
life in university.
1. Fresh grads spend too much time
in comfort zone.
2. Can be better.
Senior Chemical Engineer who is experienced
in his field who needs his recently employed
fresh grad to start contributing to his
organization with minimal training.
Problem Statement
As a engineering graduate myself, one point that senior engineer
kept bringing out was not the failure of technical expertise in
fresh grads.
Communication failure is main reason fresh grads not finding job
satisfaction in new place, as they unable to make friends and
being felt left out.
Wrong expectation of job scope and demanding life of an
engineer is one the main reason why fresh grads quit their jobs.
From the interview, I have also learned that large percentage
classmates of interviewee now working in different field, and he
seldom finds another working in engineering sector as him.
