t eenagers have low self-est eem, t hey oft en perceive t hemselves t o be unable t o
mingle and be approached for who t hey are, and t his affect s t heir body image and
self-percept ion (Wilcox, 2016). The process of addressing self-est eem and body
image-relat ed concerns requires t he development of measures t arget ing t eenagers
and societ y in such a way t hat bot h part ies can embrace and appreciat e t heir inherent
diversit y.
Negat ive body image and low self-est eem are enhanced by a plet hora of ext ernal
st ressors such as body weight , physical appearance, color and t ype of hair, and
int elligence level. For t eenagers, t he percept ion of ot hers about t hese fact ors is

t he basis of t he desire t o compare t hemselves wit h ot hers. It will also be an
opport unit y for ident ifying t he t rigger fact ors (Wilcox, 2016). The process of

such as focus groups and social groups, which will provide an opport unit y for sharing
