2. FROM FRINGE TO MAINSTREAM:
THE SEVEN STAGES OF ACCEPTANCE
THE SEVEN STAGES OF ACCEPTANCE
Throughout history, our reactions to
innovations have followed a
consistent pattern of acceptance as
they moved into the mainstream:
3. 1st STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I’ve never heard of it.
Why would I try it / legalize it?
Why should I care?
4. 2nd STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I’ve heard of it, but I think it’s
dangerous / unethical / will never work.
It will never scale.
5. 3rd STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I understand what it is, but
I don’t think it’s useful / beneficial / helpful
for me, my customers.
6. 4th STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I think it’s potentially useful /
beneficial / helpful.
I’d like to start gathering data, to see
what traction there is in the marketplace.
7. 5th STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I’ve started to accept it as useful /
beneficial / helpful, but
I still think of it as a novelty rather than a
necessity.
I’d like to see some research on how
early adopters are using it.
8. 6th STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
I now use it all the time; it’s part of my
daily routine!
I’m looking for ways to introduce more
of my customers to it!
9. 7th STAGE OF ACCEPTANCE
It’s indispensable. How did I ever
manage without it?
Damn— why didn’t I think of that
sooner?
24. - Non-traditional marketing – RV shows, retirement/healthy living shows, health and wellness fairs, rotary
groups, optimist groups, demos at farmer’s markets…all these are key, because if you get people on it, you get
the ‘aha’ moment and they envision themselves the bike with a ‘I can ride this’ attitude.
- The best magic is when 1) a broad product selection (to meet the diverse needs, styles, wants) meets
2) expertise/knowledge given in a low-tech basic way meets 3) a great test ride experience
Thanks for the opportunity to revisit and reaffirm what we’ve done and need to keep doing!
Looking forward to a super fun 2017 with more smiles than ever!

May name is David Cabanban, I would like to speak with you about the Electric Bicycle and what I have learned over the past 20 years. How it can get more of your people on ebikes and help you make eBikes your most profitable category in your store. I am going to talk a little about some of the things we have learned form the past, whats happening in the present and think is coming in the future for this category.
Before I do that, I would like to share with you something that I discovered about technology adoption called the 7 STAGES of Adoption that will help you understand why now is the time to invest in this category in order to be able to make more money as the ebike moves closer to mainstream.
almost all innovations have followed a consistent pattern of acceptance as they moved into the mainstream:
As I go through these 7 Stages, think about some of the technologies that this would apply to like the Cell Phone, Face Book, Uber/Lift, Bike Share
1st Stage
I’ve never heard of it. Why should I care?
That is stupid, who would buy a bike like that.
2nd Stage
I’ve heard of it, but I think it will never sell.
There is a guy at the bar who rides one who has a DWI.
I understand what it is, but I don’t think it’s useful I have a coworker who is legally blind who can’t get a drivers license that bought one last year and loves it.
4th Stage
I think is has potential, I am interested but, the guys that I ride with would make fun of me.
5th Stage
I’ve started to accept that it’s useful
1) because my new job is only 15 miles from home and I would like to get rid of my car.
2) My wife and I would like to get out on the bikes more.
6th
I now use it all the time.
1) We bought one for the shop and we use it all the time for our coffee runs.
2) One guy at our shop has one and he rides 20 miles each way to the shop.
7th Stage
It’s indispensable, How did I ever manage without it?
I sold my car last year. Between the ebike and uber I am able to get every where I need to.
We are somewhere between Stage 6 and 7 and we are bering to see the ebike tip.
This is
This is what I consider to be the beginning of the modern aria of the electric bicycle
