Assertive Discipline
Dayln Germany and Mariah Harvey
Responses to misbehavior
There are three types of responses teachers use with their
students:
1. Nonassertive- The teacher fails to let his or her students
clearly know what they want and what they will not
accept. They fail to back up their words with appropriate,
decisive actions.
2. Hostile-Teachers address their students in an abusive
way. They make derogatory remarks and often lose their
tempers and commonly put down their students.
3. Assertive- Teachers clearly communicate their wants
and feelings to their students and indicate a willingness
to back up their words with actions if necessary.
Roadblocks to becoming more assertive
The common roadblocks for being more assertive is a
teacher’s doubt about their ability to deal with
students’ behavior problems.
✘ They must learn to implement assertive discipline
consistently
✘ It is OKAY to seek help from school administrators
and other teachers if they can’t control a student
with severe behavioral problems. It is better to
seek help sooner than later.
✘ Parents need to be involved! Many children with
behavior problems respond more readily when
parents are involved.
Applying Assertive Discipline
Six steps to follow in applying assertive discipline:
1. Create positive student-teacher relationships
2. Establish rules or expectations
3. Track misbehavior
4. Use punishments to enforce limits
5. Implement a system of positive consequences
6. Establish strong parent support
Some Problems with Punishment or Negative
Consequences
✘ Punishment is not an effective approach to changing student behavior.
○ Can cause more behavioral problems when used heavily.
✘ Punishment does not teach the student how to act appropriately.
✘ Punished students will try to avoid the punisher.
○ Can lead to lying, cheating, skipping school, faking illness, hiding, withdrawing,
doodling, etc.
✘ Punishment can hinder students from developing desired social skills.
○ Spontaneity, cooperativeness, and assertiveness
✘ Punished students tend to lose interest and struggle academically in school.
○ Examples:
■ Students are given extra work as punishment.
■ Student’s grade is lowered as punishment.
✘ How a student responds to punishment one day may not be the case for another day.
Preventing Discipline Problems
✘ Teachers need to be assertive and have control of their classroom
✘ Establish clear, firm rules
✘ Be consistent and timely with consequences
✘ Reward positive behaviors
○ Many students misbehave as a way to gain attention
○ Get positive attention to students for appropriate behavior
Schoolwide Discipline
✘ Schoolwide rules are established for areas that students have in common.
○ Lunchroom, hallways, playground, tardies, etc.
✘ When students violate a rule, they receive a set consequence.
○ Student throws food in the lunchroom.
■ First offense: Student is given a slip to take home and return signed by a
parent or guardian.
■ Second offense: Student loses lunchroom privileges for a week and slip will
again go home with the student for a signature.
■ Third offense: Loss of lunchroom privileges for two weeks and a conference
between the child, parents, and principal.
■ Fourth offense: Student permanently loses lunchroom privileges.
✘ More serious violations require harsher punishments.
○ Such violations include:
■ A student harms another student physically, destroys property, or refuses
to follow instructions

Assertive discipline

  • 2. Responses to misbehavior There are three types of responses teachers use with their students: 1. Nonassertive- The teacher fails to let his or her students clearly know what they want and what they will not accept. They fail to back up their words with appropriate, decisive actions. 2. Hostile-Teachers address their students in an abusive way. They make derogatory remarks and often lose their tempers and commonly put down their students. 3. Assertive- Teachers clearly communicate their wants and feelings to their students and indicate a willingness to back up their words with actions if necessary.
  • 3. Roadblocks to becoming more assertive The common roadblocks for being more assertive is a teacher’s doubt about their ability to deal with students’ behavior problems. ✘ They must learn to implement assertive discipline consistently ✘ It is OKAY to seek help from school administrators and other teachers if they can’t control a student with severe behavioral problems. It is better to seek help sooner than later. ✘ Parents need to be involved! Many children with behavior problems respond more readily when parents are involved.
  • 4. Applying Assertive Discipline Six steps to follow in applying assertive discipline: 1. Create positive student-teacher relationships 2. Establish rules or expectations 3. Track misbehavior 4. Use punishments to enforce limits 5. Implement a system of positive consequences 6. Establish strong parent support
  • 5. Some Problems with Punishment or Negative Consequences ✘ Punishment is not an effective approach to changing student behavior. ○ Can cause more behavioral problems when used heavily. ✘ Punishment does not teach the student how to act appropriately. ✘ Punished students will try to avoid the punisher. ○ Can lead to lying, cheating, skipping school, faking illness, hiding, withdrawing, doodling, etc. ✘ Punishment can hinder students from developing desired social skills. ○ Spontaneity, cooperativeness, and assertiveness ✘ Punished students tend to lose interest and struggle academically in school. ○ Examples: ■ Students are given extra work as punishment. ■ Student’s grade is lowered as punishment. ✘ How a student responds to punishment one day may not be the case for another day.
  • 6. Preventing Discipline Problems ✘ Teachers need to be assertive and have control of their classroom ✘ Establish clear, firm rules ✘ Be consistent and timely with consequences ✘ Reward positive behaviors ○ Many students misbehave as a way to gain attention ○ Get positive attention to students for appropriate behavior
  • 7.
