Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in South Africa and was given the name Nelson by his teacher when he started school. He became a lawyer and fought against the apartheid system in South Africa as a member of the African National Congress. In 1964, Mandela was sentenced to life in prison for trying to undermine the government but was released in 1990. He then became the first black President of South Africa in 1994.
