Ashford University Assignment Submision Week 2 AssignmentAnalyzing News Media
For assistance completing this assignment, view theMedia Literacy Skills video for an overview of media literacy concepts and tutorial for how to conduct your analysis.
The media’s role as a source of information is one that we are highly dependent on. We depend on the media to tell us about things that are going on in our cities and states, in our nation, and in other countries so that we can make informed decisions. Rarely, however, do we critically think about the creation of the message or the media organizations that deliver those informative messages to us.
For this assignment, you will choose one media entity to analyze the content of news media. You may choose a local, national, or international news source. Choose a time that will allow you to view, read, or listen to the source for a one- to two-hour block of time. Because of the nature of immediate updates in digital media, it will be important to analyze a specific block of time. Here are some suggestions for capturing news that is not in print format:
· Television News: Set your DVR so that you will be able to revisit the recording for the analysis.
· Radio: Find the online component for the broadcast, and useAudacity to record the news talk show of your choice.
· Website: To truly capture the news from a website for a particular time frame, you should save the webpages to your computer so that you will have a record of them to analyze as you have time.
For the analysis, you must:
· Identify the author of the message.
· Explain the creative techniques used to capture the attention of the audience.
· Identify and explain the values and points of view that are contained within the message and those that are omitted from the message.
· Discuss how different audience members may interpret the message.
· Adhere to the News Media Analysis Template.
The analysis must:
· Be a minimum of two pages and no more than three pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and be formatted according to APA style as outlined in theAshford Writing Center.
· Include at least three sources from the reading for the week to support your ideas. The list of sources must be formatted using APA style.
Check It! Your assignment must be submitted throughGrammarly prior to submission.
Saving Your Work: To maintain the formatting of your work, you are strongly encouraged to save your assignment as a PDF file. ViewSaving a Word Document as a PDF for steps on how to do this.

Where Did You Hear That?
Gone are the days of written letters and heart-felt cards that are received in the mail; unless of course it is at Christmas and you get a card from someone with a “selfie” of them and the family on the front. While technology has made it easier for us.

Where Did You Hear That?
Gone are the days of written letters and heart-felt cards that are
received in the mail; unless of course it is at Christmas and you
get a card from someone with a “selfie” of them and the family
on the front. While technology has made it easier for use to
communicate it has also taken away some of the personalization
of the message. This can even be said of journalism. Where you
used to receive a full half-hour of community-focused news on
your local channel, today the time is divided between local
3. happenings and things that are going on all over the world. We
are so connected that often times we can become disconnected.
This week we will:
1. Discuss the information role of media.
2. Write about the advantages and disadvantages associated
with digital and social media use in a simulated blog.
3. Analyze news media’s use of digital and media literacy
concepts.
Information Overload
I can vividly remember the day that we finally got cable
television lines installed in the “country” where I lived. We had
no idea what to expect but we were all excited that we would
have more than three channels to choose from. Of course, before
we knew of cable, those three channels were more than enough.
With it ushered in the 24 hour news format of CNN and that was
a phenomenal thing in our view. The thing that perplexed me
most about the channel was the tickers that ran across the
bottom of the screen wondering how they did that! My local
stations were not offering that at the time probably because of
lack of expertise and lack of funding to make it a reality. That
was my first feeling of information overload! I had the hardest
time trying to listen, watch, and read the news. It was just too
much for me to digest. Little did I or anyone else know that that
was just the tip of the iceberg for what was to come?

What Attracts You?
In the reading Potter (2014) discusses a lot about the
“attraction” of electronic gaming to people and the possible
competitive or cooperative nature that drives people to engage.
I would like to take a moment to examine that in the context of
social media and how we get our information and how we
provide information about ourselves and other things to those
around us using social media.
4. In researching this topic, I discovered an interesting “Top 10”
list that was produced this year that I would like to share with
you. The survey was conducted by Global Web Index and it
sought to find out what were the top reasons that people
provided for using social media.
SOMETHING TO PONDER
1. What form of media do you use to get most of your news?
2. Do you compare the way in which different outlets deliver
news and information?
3. Do you believe that social media is a reliable source of
information or do you believe it leads to confusion about the
real issues?
THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENTS
Through each of your assignments this week, you will explore
more about the information role of media, how we use digital
and social media to send and receive information, and critically
examine messages that we come in contact with. For these
assignments you must really make an effort to tune in to
different forms of media even if, otherwise, you would not. You
will also have to attend to media actively rather than passively,
which is what we do most of the time because of multi-tasking.
So I challenge you to realty make media the forefront as you
consider each assignment this week.
