3. Evolution
• The concept of Internet was originated in 1969 and has undergone several
technological & Infrastructural changes as discussed below:
• The origin of Internet devised from the concept of Advanced Research Project Agency
Network (ARPANET).
• ARPANET was developed by United States Department of Defense.
• Basic purpose of ARPANET was to provide communication among the various bodies
of government.
• Initially, there were only four nodes, formally called Hosts.
• In 1972, the ARPANET spread over the globe with 23 nodes located at different
countries and thus became known as Internet.
• By the time, with invention of new technologies such as TCP/IP protocols, DNS,
WWW, browsers, scripting languages etc.,Internet provided a medium to publish and
access information over the web.

5. The Difference Between an Intranet and Internet
• An intranet is designed to allow a company to share information and resources with
others in the company, for group projects and teleconferencing. This is in contrast to
the Internet, which is public access.
• There's one major distinction between an intranet and the Internet: The Internet is
an open, public space, while an intranet is designed to be a private space. An
intranet may be accessible from the Internet, but as a rule it's protected by a
password and accessible only to employees or other authorized users.
6. Difference
Intranet Internet
Localized Network. Worldwide Network
Doesn't have access to Intranet Have access to Internet.
More Expensive Less Expensive
More Safe Less Safe
More Reliability Less Reliability
9. Intranet services
• The services may include the following:
Mail Services
File Transfers
Web Services
Video Services
10. Essential Components of an intranet:
• A network
• TCP/IP on servers and clients
• Hardware for hosting intranet services
• Mail servers
• Web server for hosting Web pages
• Browsers
11. Benefits of An Intranet
• Scalability. Most intranets are built to conform to the needs of the company. It can be
scaled down or scaled up when needed.
• Reduce cost. An intranet can reduce cost by minimizing paper work, fewer elevator trips
and quicker and easier communication.
• Improved productivity. Since an intranet features various useful apps like collaboration
tools, interactive tools, social platforms, content repositories, employees can gain help as
well as improve their working process. This increases productivity and at the same time
benefits company profit.
• Increased security. Since an intranet revolves in an internal network, the chances of
getting hacked are minimized. In the internet, the security of the organization’s website
and dealings are usually lowered.
12. • Better customer service. An intranet organizes everything within the company, it
eases information searching and it provides tools to make work quicker. This helps in
servicing customers faster. Some intranets and companies may even open a part of an
intranet to outside people due to business reasons but with the right security and
access control of course.
• Access to internal and external information. An intranet gives the company
employees access to limitless information from the outside and organization specific
information from the inside.
• Increases collaboration and coordination. Easy communication opens ways to easy
coordination of projects.
