2. Sarah: This is our main protagonist within the descent
as we follow her from the beginning where we see her
as a motherly figure as she has good relations with her
partner and children but then she goes through a
traumatic experience with the car crash. We see a
change in her character after this as her family was
important to her and now she is left alone.
Beth: Beth is Sarah’s best friend and also an
English teacher which links into the idea she
is one of the more intellectual within the
group. She is very supportive of Sarah after
the accident which shows she is very
dedicated.
Juno: She is another protagonist within the
film that portrays strength and independence
as when they are lost within the cave she
begins to take control of the situation advising
where they should go and what they should
do.
Rebecca: She is Sam’s older sister and because
off this she is very over protective. This is
shown through the fact she will often argue
with other members of the group regarding
her and eventually dies whilst exploring the
cave with her.
Sam: This is the youngest character in the
group and as so she is seen as not necessary
weak, but needs protecting and this is mainly
done by her sister Rebbeca which also links
into the idea of family unity.
Holly: She is seen as the daredevil of the
group as she is very passionate about
extreme sports and tends to get involved
before thinking about the consequences and
this can be seen through when she falls down
a hole and breaks her leg
3. This image shows the group
together sleeping in a cabin the
night before they plan to explore
the cave. The image gives of a
warmth and friendly vibe as they
all seem very comfortable and at
ease with each other. It is
something stereotypical for
women as they are having a
sleepover in their pajamas.
This image gives the complete
opposite vibe. The dark color scheme
gives a distressed and hardened feel
and it is clear to see they have gone
through a change from the last image
as they have to adapt, improvise and
survive within a new situation which
has changed them.
4. This image shows Paul and Juno within close proximity to each other
with an awkward tension. This gives us an early indication that they
have had an affair with each other. This is something that causes
conflict during the latter part of the film when Sarah finds out about
it. The idea of sex equals death is a common theme in horror films and
this could be foreshadowing towards Juno’s death.
