Abstract
Ever since my mother started working at an outpatient rehabilitation center, I have always wanted to be a physical therapist. I chose to right my
paper on this field for the fact that I have seen the ins and outs of the career field. I have spent the majority of my teen life in the gym working out
next to many of the physical therapists as they worked and have become quite close to many of them. I feel as though this field is great for those that
care for their patients and like to see them get better. This is where the "I want to walk again" becomes the "I will walk again". In that gym, I have
seen the rubber meet the road and words become to actions. Thus, I have been driven to become one of them rather than just another onlooker.
The healthcare profession of physical therapist started in the Hippocrates and Greek culture, progressing through to today's day and age where we are
utilizing state of the art equipment to rehabilitate and treat patients so they are able to live a better life for themselves and their loved ones. The Greek
culture is where physical therapy started. It was the basis here that gave life to treating diseases and injuries through exercises. It continued to progress
through the centuries adding to its "toolbox" the use of temperature change and electricity as well as other

Physical Therapy Is The Health Profession
Physical therapy is the health profession that provides treatment and management of physical disability, malfunction, or pain via various modalities,
and without the use of medicines, surgery, or radiation [1]. An individual who practices physical therapy is known as a physical therapist. Physical
therapists are experts of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems, and they evaluate and treat patients for issues that involve those systems [2].
The role of a physical therapist is to evaluate patients, and to provide treatment to patients that focus primarily on movement. This includes, but is not
limited to, restoration of movement as well as improving movement, reducing pain levels, returning function that may have been lost, and improving
function.[2] "The most predominant clinical setting where physical therapists... provide care include hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices,
nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, school systems, and sport centers [2]." Typically, to receive access to the services provided by
a physical therapist, a patient has to be referred to a physical therapist by a physician. [2] Therefore, physical therapy is usually a secondary health care.
The profession of physical therapy sounds fantastic, because it is. However, the art of physical therapy wasn't just born a perfect creature; it took some
time to develop as a great profession.

6. The advance in this occupation is saying how that there will be a job growth for physical therapists which means that new jobs will be added in
healthcare segments but it also states in Jobs.net that not every healthcare segment will have a job growth. (Jobs.net). There is a strategy for this and
it's by achieving details offered by the crystal career ball. 7. Time for the work schedule. Some physical therapists work normal business hours, 8 a.m.–
5 p.m., but also some may work in the evenings or even on the weekends. I would prefer the normal business hours and some hours on the weekend
just because if someone had missed their appointment during the week and they cannot make it up, they can come on the weekend.

multiple body parts, bending, stooping, squatting, and even standing. A PT's constant movement is extremely taxing and heightens the risk of getting

The House of Delegates elected a Board of Directors, to manage the association. In the 1960s the association had reached almost 15,000 members and
the programs across the nation had reached 52. The program was growing gradually and steady.
The association is now headquartered in Alexander, Virginia. The association now represents more than 85,000 members throughout the country. The
American Physical Therapy Association goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practices, education and research. There are currently 209
institutions offer physical therapy education programs and 309 institutions offer physical therapist assistant education programs in the United States.

work management, and job injuries to also develop. The program is very upscale in a lot of institutions and they are very competitive when you are

Occupational therapy profession began in 1917. Eleanor Clark Slagle is known as the "mother of Occupational Therapy." She attended Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, MD in 1912. She was the first to open the first professional school of occupational therapy. Dr. William Rush Dunton Jr. is
known as the "father of OT." He was a psychiatrist and educator who published the first account of the Occupational Therapy profession, who attended

If you look at any company or organization, you are bound to find a list of values, things that others view as positive qualities in a person. These could
be things such as honesty, knowledge, diligence, and compassion. Values set up a foundation for the organization, something for their employees to
follow and exemplify in their service to the general public. Employees can use their organization's values to see what their strengths are and where they
need to improve. Values also provide a reference point when hiring new employees, helping employers to see which individuals are already living the

They used a technique called the Delphi technique, where a panel of experts was selected and the experts responded to questionnaires stating their
concerns with ethics. The experts narrowed their concerns down to three categories: patient rights and welfare, professional issues, and business
factors. The experts chose six patient rights and welfare issues, five professional issues, and five relating to business factors to be the most important.
The first issues addressed, the patients' rights and welfare issues, were the primary concern of the panel of experts. The issues at hand focused on
interactions, confidentiality, sexuality, and consensual issues between doctors and patients. Any interaction between a doctor and patient should be
understood and clear. Sexual activities between doctor and patient should be prohibited, and all interactions should be ensured as confidential.
The second issues faced were professional ones. These issues dealt primarily with policies and relations between health professionals. Some issues listed

Hirai is a the manager at a local rehabilitation hospital. He does management functions such as staffing and budgeting as well as treats patients who

While obtaining this certification, it is good that you start a good solid base for the learning yet to come. It is good to take part in health science
classes or clubs so you can get your feet wet while still learning the rules and occupations of the health field. Upon completion of high school, it is

De bono (1933) quoted ?Effectiveness without values is a tool without a purpose?. Came to my mind when I first read Professionalism in Physical
Therapy: Core Values published byAmerican Physical Therapy Association. I believe that core values play a major role in determining one?s standing
in the society, either as an Individual or an Organization. APTA (2003) stated that in 2002 eighteen physical therapists based on their expertise in
physical therapy practice, education and research were invited by APTA?s Education Division to participate in a consensus based conference to develop
consensus based document on professionalism that include Core values of the profession and its indicators that are fully consistent with core values
and professional education matrix that includes educational outcomes, examples of terminal behavioral objectives, and examples of instructional
objectives for classroom and clinical practice.
Seven core values have been identified to incorporate many values and attributes that are part of physical therapist professionalism. APTA developed a
core value self–assessment tool for physical therapist behaviors and how they reflect professionalism in their daily practice.

Physical Therapy Career Field
When considering the physical therapy career field, I concluded that my interests and skills are compatible with the career requirements in this
field. My sisters friend whom I chose to interview for this paper, contributed to my interest in physical therapy. By doing this research I would like
to learn the average pay for a physical therapist. Also, what are suggested classes for a physical therapist while in college? This research will help me
better understand what a physical therapist does and will either help me lean towards or away from a career in this field. Physical therapy has a long and
changing history. As a medical treatment, physical therapy goes back as far as cave dwellers, but was not considered a profession until World War
I. During ancient times many places, worshiped the sun for its healing powers. Places such as Germany who worshiped and also set up fields where
people lay in the sun to get well. Different therapies that were used throughout history contributed to physical therapy as a profession, hyper therapy,
cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, and electrotherapy. As a polio epidemic swept the United States from 1915 through 1917, many therapists services were
requested to help victims recover from the effects of this devastating illness. By the end of World War II, physical therapy was a widely accepted
therapeutic practice. Near the 19th century in Britain, physical therapy was established, and all of the people being trained were women. The first

My area of interest in the field of exercise science is physical therapy. Consequently, the National Organization that I researched was the American
Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This organization uses the guiding principles of identity, quality, collaboration, value, innovation,
consumer–centricity, access/equality, and advocacy to work toward and achieve their vision of "[t]ransforming society by optimizing movement to
improve the human experience" (American – Vision). In addition to this mission, further research led me to discover the perks that this organization
offers and the connections that it forms. This organization is one that can I can utilize and greatly benefit from in the future. The American Physical
Therapy Association is an accredited National Organization that offers membership to students, employers, and employees in the field of physical
therapy from all across the country. As a student, I could benefit from being a member through discounts, aid, insurance, employment resources,
evidence and research resources, and involvement opportunities (American – Membership Benefits for Students). After completing my education and

These prices range from $60 for PT and PTA life members to $295 for physical therapists (American– Dues & Payments). New graduate members are
offered discounted dues, which cuts their payment in half. For two to four years after graduation, students may still be eligible to save 20–40%
(American – Dues & Payments). The APTA offers an Easy Pay Plan in which members pay their dues in four installments over six months (American,
Dues & Payments). There is also an Auto Renew Plan that automatically renews membership every year (American– Dues & Payments). Being a
member of the APTA would be incredibly beneficial, and I will most definitely be utilizing this organization in the
