Reflection About Identity
In the book Letters from Young Activists, one of the letters by Guadalupe Salcedo, she says "[I]f I
hadn't struggled through my own process of reflection and growth in regards to my identity, I don't
think I would have learned so much about the world and why people are not only against similar
issues but creating bridges between communities to overcome them" (86). The quote resonates so
much with me because of my early stage as a developing young man who wants to be a positive
addition to society. I am here at Brandeis University, an institution that wants to shape my form of
thinking and provide me with innovative and useful skills for a future that I very much ignore at the
moment, but that I am envisioning. The way I can envision is looking at what I think is wrong in the
world, questioning how can I be part of the force that change the thing that is deemed as "wrong,"
and how does my identity fit in all this? Growing up as an immigrant, who for some time was
undocumented, I realized how broken the system in the US was and it still is. When I first started to
hear about the DREAMers, I was still undocumented and I felt pretty much that a cohesive voice
was being raised to speak on behalf of me and many others. Those young child arrivals who never
made the decision to be brought to a strange land, made themselves visible because of the lack of
resources, they felt frustrated for the lack of social mobility. Many of them, after graduating high
school, found themselves

What Is Art?, And Marcel Duchamp 's The Creative Act
Today day, art still is a controversial subject of aesthetics, in discussing whether variety form of
modern visual art is art or not. In Laurie Schneider Adams' article "What is Art?" and Marcel
Duchamp's "The Creative Act", they have own criteria to definite what the nature of art, its meaning
and its function. In evaluation Doris Salcedo's art work Atrabilious, a set of worn shoes encased in
rectangle niches on the wall. I agree with their explanation of art thought the combined in structure
and form to express the truth and beauty of Salcedo's work, the nonfigurative subject catches the
symbolic harrowing moment of the effect of war and violence happened, also a metaphor of her
culture idea and individual meaning, experience her political view to deal with female issue of the
subject matter. The female shoes as the subject of this artwork do not have the beauty and cannot
understand the truth at the first sign, but the form the art clearly indicates the representation meaning
of the truth of the subject. In Adam's views of art, "the works of art are not necessarily narrative, and
they may not represent recognizable figures and objects. " It is a three dimensional or two
dimensional representations contain with style and idea that different from the nature's creation. In
her work, Shoes painted on pieces of flat fabrics that covered by a sheet of semitransparent animal
skin that stitched with surgical thread and held in six different separated niches. Some niches

Example Of Archetypal Criticism In In The Time Of The...
An American poet once stated, "Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the
utmost possible degree" (Pound). Every piece of literature has an impactful underlying meaning and
can be interpreted into universal symbols, motifs, and patterns. Archetypal Criticism is a theory
based off common myths, images, and symbols in literature. The definition of an archetypal can be
defined as a very typical example of a certain person or thing (Davidson). With that being said,
readers can apply Archetypal Criticism to In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Alvarez
uses common character types, like the hero and the villain, and also uses the symbol of butterflies in
her novel.
One way Archetypal Criticism is reflected in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is relating the Mirabal sisters to butterflies. Regina M. Cutter Edwards, an
Entomologist, states, "Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. [...] Around the
world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life" (Edwards). The
term "butterfly" was the sisters' code name for the movement. The butterfly was a symbol for them,
not only because that is what they were called, but also because they symbolized what it meant to be
a butterfly. The Mirabal sisters changed from being little children following their parents, to
individuals leading a revolution and having other people follow them. When Minerva was young,
she stated, "I had thought it was caused by the bandages I had started tying around my chest so my
breasts won't grow" (Alvarez 23). She put bandages around her breast so Trujillo wouldn't take her
to be one of his ladies. Minerva started out as a person that was fearful into a person that was
fearless. Patria and Mate also have the code name Butterfly #1 and Butterfly #2. Mate states, "Then
everyone was beating on the bars, calling out ¡Viva la Mariposa! Tears came to my eyes. Something
big and powerful spread its wings inside me. Courage, I told myself. And this time, I felt it"
(Alvarez 238). Mate changed into having courage and endurance as she grew up in Trujillo's

Immigration Essay
Immigration has a significant impact on today's society. Each year, more and more people from
around the world decide to leave their home countries and move to a different place. Some argue
that immigrants flood across borders, steal jobs, are a burden on taxpayers and threaten indigenous
culture. Others say the opposite: that immigration boosts economic growth, meets skill shortages,
and helps create a more dynamic society. This essay will examine the reasons and the consequences
of immigration.
In my view, the main reason of immigration is a strong desire of better life quality and safe future. A
lot of people from so–called Third World move to developed countries in search of better
employment opportunities, and therefore, higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evidence clearly shows that immigrants provide significant economic benefits. Of the global annual
flow of around 15 million migrants, most fit into one of four categories: economic (6 million),
student (4 million), family (2 million), and refugee/asylum (3 million). Following Goldin, 2016, in
the United State, over a third of documented immigrants are skilled. Similar trends exist in Europe.
These percentages reflect the needs of those economies. Governments that are more open to
immigration assist their country's businesses, which become more agile, adaptive and profitable in
the war for talent. Government in turn receive more revenue and citizens thrive on the dynamism
that highly–skilled migrants bring.
However, sometime immigration causes many problems than it solves, resulting in negative
consequences for both immigrant and their countries of destination. Most of refugees can't find jobs
because of the lack of language skills and difficulties in adaptation. Following the center for
immigration studies, 19.9 percent of immigrants compared to 13.5 percent of natives lived in
poverty in 2010. The higher incidence of poverty among immigrants as a group has

Doris Salcedo Installation
Doris Salcedo was born in Columbia in 1958 and graduated from NYU in 1984. She creates
incredible artwork ranging from minimalistic work to chaotic installations. It is said that she focuses
her work on giving a voice to victims of violence and the Third World countries. Not only do I love
the message Salcedo is trying to put out, I also think her work is extremely creative. The piece that
stood out the most to me was her Installations at 8th International Istanbul Biennial. This installation
is over 1,500 wooden chairs stacked up in–between two buildings in the middle of the city. This
piece goes very well with her focus on victims of violence. This installation could be seen as a mass
grave for anonymous victims. Each chair is unidentifiable,

The Impact Of Spanish Rule On Puerto Ricans Today
The Impact of Spanish Rule on Puerto Ricans Today
What was Puerto Rico like under Spanish rule, and how important is that rule to the formation of the
Puerto Rican people today? To answer these questions, we must take a look at the history of the
Spanish and their colonization of the island of Puerto Rico.
As we know, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain "found" by Christopher Columbus on November
19, 1493, and remained a colony of Spain for the next 400 years. But the interesting fact remains
that Puerto Rico was not truly settled by the Spaniards until almost fifteen years later! In 1508, Juan
Ponce de Leon came to settle the land of Borinken, and founded the town of Caparra. This was the
start of a proud people that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The few surviving Tainos took off to the mountains for survival. The first two important elements of
whom and what makes up Puerto Rican people, is here. The Taino Indians are 1/3 of the element.
The second element, were the Spaniards.
The Spanish now were the main people of the island, but there was only one problem now. There
was no more gold to be found (which was the original reason most of the Spaniards came), and
Puerto Rico had to be productive to Spain in some fashion.
Facing the fact that there was no more gold, the Spaniards looked to the rich land and soil for the
next way that Puerto Rico could help the Kingdom of Spain. They raised cattle, and they planted
staple crops, but sugarcane was the bread and butter so to speak. The only problem was that they
could only trade with Spain for a long time and Spain grew their own sugarcane, too. But let's not
jump ahead of ourselves here. What was needed was a labor force to work these fields, and the
Taino Indians were living in the Hinterlands. There was no way they were going to work those
fields.
This brings us to the third main element that makes up the Puerto Rican people. This third main
element, were the African slaves that were brought in. In fact, the three main elements were all
together on the island of Puerto Rico in a relatively short time span. The proof of this is

Internet Outweighs the Potential Negatives for Adolescents
Outline Thesis: The potential positive influences offered by the Internet outweigh the potential
negatives for adolescents. I. Online media opens up adolescents to the larger world A. The
international nature of the current online media 1. Twitter: The 'Arab spring' largely began through
'tweets' issued by young people (Singh 2011). 2. Having an online connection exposes young people
to newspapers and other media internationally B. The Internet facilitates communication with others
1. People can connect based upon their similar interests online, like movies and cooking, regardless
of where they live. 2. The Internet can help break down prejudices since people are judged by how
they articulate themselves online, now how they look or what they wear. II. Adolescents can use the
online format to delve into subjects they are embarrassed to discuss in real life. A. Many adolescents
have questions about their sexual health and sexuality. 1. The online format allows them to discuss
concerns anonymously. 2. It allows them to research and speak without fear of censure from their
friends or parents. Even if they have good relationships with these individuals, some teens are too
shy to address sexual concerns out loud. B. Many legitimate sources are using the Internet to
communicate to adolescents, such as the Centers for Disease Control and other government health
agencies around the world to communicate important information to young people (Jiménez–
Pernett, et al, 2011). III.

The Real Heroine
Do you always stand up for what you believe in? Minerva and all of the Mirabal sisters stand up for
what they believe in is right, but Minerva stands up for what she believes in throughout all of her
life, not just a specific time. Minerva is the biggest heroine out of all of the
Mirabal sisters. Minerva wants to go to law school, therefore she asks Trujillo for his permission to
go to law school. Minerva starts liking a young man, mostly because he stands up for what he
believes in. Minerva also ends up marrying the love of her life and they end up starting a revolution
over what they believe is right.

She was a hero to Sinita. Minerva announced, "My hands freed, I saved the day, according to what
Sinita had said later."(Alvarez 22)
Minerva was outspoken at the performance at her school and kept Sinita from getting in a lot of
trouble. Minerva argued, "I'm not interested in admirers until I have my law degree."(Alvarez 66)
Minerva was independent and did not care what anyone else thought. She cared about her education
and was outspoken because she knew what she wanted to do. To be outspoken and stand up you
must also be brave.
Minerva was a heroine because she was the bravest sister. Minerva is hearing
Sinita's story about Trujillo and she can hardly bear it, "I started crying, but I pinched my arms to

their problems no matter how hard it was for her. Minerva explained the story of Trujillo dancing

hand in an endless slow motion rise––––a mind all its own––––and come down on the astonished,
made–up face." (Alvarez 67) Minerva did not like the way Trujillo was treating her, and instead of
bowing down to his authority, she stood up for herself, which took courage.

Effects Of Stretching Mediated Tension On Ventricular...
EFFECTS OF STRETCHING–MEDIATED TENSION ON VENTRICULAR CONTRACTION OF
TOAD HEART
INTRODUCTION
Heart contraction is produced by stretching of sarcomere units, which produces strokes between
myosin head and actin monomers located in the thin filament of sarcomere (Robinson, Dong et al.
2004). Changes in the resting tension of heart muscle affect the range of heart contraction. The heart
has the capacity to adjust its contraction force as result of variations in ventricular filling (end–
diastole), this effect is known as the Frank–Starling Law (Sequeira and van der Velden 2015). An
increased systolic contraction is the results of the ventricle stretching due to greater end–diastolic

Three ECG leads were attached in the toad body. A thin wire attached to the alligator clip of the
positive lead was inserted through the muscle wall of the ventricle, far enough to avoid touching the
bend pin. The negative lead was attached to right collar bone. Finally, the earth lead as attached to
right hind–limb.
Data was recording using the LabChart software. Tension was increased on the heart with the micro
positioner until the signal was strong enough to be read. Data for "Control", also known as "baseline
data" was collected before increasing tension on the heart. In this case, tension of baseline was set at
30 mm. Data was recorded during 2 minutes. After control data was recorded, tension on heart was
increased by 5 mm and data was collected during 2 minutes until 45 mm was reached. A total of 3
replicates were recorder for each condition.
After data was recorder, amplitude of contraction force was calculated for each condition and its
average was calculated. Averages calculated from LabChart was used in Graph prism software to
analyze and compare each condition. Finally, statistical analysis was performed using one–way
ANOVA with multiple comparisons. P–value threshold stablished was 0.05.
RESULTS
As shown in Figure 1, comparison between control group (13.09 ± 2.769 mN) and condition at 35

It would take a lot of nerve to even think about creating a revolution. Even after Minerva got out of
jail, she said "The butterflies were not about to give up, we had suffered a set back but we had not
been beaten," this quote showed that Minerva would do whatever it takes to get the men out of
prison, even if it is risking her life. Though it was not just the men she wanted to get, she wanted to
get everyone's right to have freedom. Minerva was tired of Trujillo making all the rules without
anyone else's opinion. She was at her limit of doing anything it would take. At this point she became
fearless.
Dede was known to hide from her problems that feared her. Dede did her best to protect her family,
no matter what. When Lio gave Dede a note to give Minerva, Dede opened the letter first and saw
what he said about wanting Minerva to go to the asylum with him. She refused, "Dede could not
expose her sister to this danger," right after she read the note, she immediately burned it so Minerva
could not find it or anybody else (Alvarez 83). Allowing Minerva going to the asylum would be a
huge risk because all the recent refugees had been put in prison. Since Minerva is part of the
revolution, there would not be any thoughts about her being locked up in jail. Just thinking about
Minerva being caught scared Dede. Along with that, Dede was a perfect example for the theme

of his expedition arrived in Vigan on June 13, 1572. Forthwith, they made Cabigbigaan (Bigan), the

which eventually gained fame as the "Intramuros of Ilocandia". Salcedo declared the whole
Northern Luzon as an encomienda. Subsequently, he became the encomendero of Vigan and
Lieutenant Governor of the Ylokos until his death in July 1574. Augustinian missionaries joined the
military forces in conquering the region through evangelization. They established parishes and built
churches that still stand today. Three centuries later, Vigan became the seat of the Archdiocese of

Salcedo's Shibboleth: An Analysis
Over the course of time the motivations for creating art has shifted. Artists all have different
intentions when they create a piece of art, depending on the context of the time period and society in
which the work was created. Some artworks are created to provide commentary on a particular
issue, to educate, record history, challenge the status quo, or for ceremonial/celebratory purposes.
The motivations for creating art in the context of modern times is different from those of previous
eras. Throughout modern times, art has been a way for individuals to educate, or in better terms,
raise awareness on particular social issues. This concept is seen in Doris Salcedo's installation,

tragedy, Hamlet is presented with characters and situations that infuriate him creating anger and
hate. Nevertheless, the hate for his mother Gertrude is extreme and above the hate he has for anyone

Hamlet has very high expectations for Gertrude and when he finds out that they have not been met

Narcos is a gritty gangster drama series based on the true story of Colombia's infamously violent
and powerful drug cartels during the 1980's and 1990's. "Good people and bad people" are terms
interchangeably used in this TV show and when deviance is depicted in the Narcos show, it is not
only the criminals departing from the usual or accepted standards from society but also political and
government officials are as much deviant as the Narcos themselves. I will also argue that this show
uplifts toxic masculinity which is socially–constructed attitudes that describe the masculine gender
role as violent, unemotional, sexually aggressive, and how toxic masculinity ruins society and men
through the examples displayed from the show. Pablo Escobar, when speaking on deviance once
said, "[A]ll empires are created of blood and fire". I agree with what Escobar said, because all
empires have their positives, but at the same time many, if not all are built upon bloodshed and do
we critique when great empires take over another country and the way they go about that with
raping, torture or other means of submission? Deviance plays a big role in everything that has to do
with building a great nation or a world–wide cartel. When deviance is depicted on the Narcos show,
some of the deviance is noted by government officials. The Narcos show demonstrates how many
officials of the Colombian police department deviated and departed

Essay about The Heroism of Minerva Mirabal Who was the...
How do the Mirabal sisters compare to colonial patriots? Both fought for freedom. Both risked their
lives to gain their freedom. And even though all of the Mirabal sisters were involved,
I believe that Minerva was the most courageous. She fought for her personal freedom, she fought for
the rights of women, and she even brought her own family into the rebellion to assist her in fighting
against tyranny.. Through this essay I will explain my overall opinion and show that
Minerva was the bravest and most devoted of the Mirabal sisters.
Minerva first began to show her bravery when she wanted to go to a boarding school. She was not
afraid of being away from home, even as a child. She wants to experience the world to free her mind

This was at the formal dance when Trujillo began to dance with her and they began to talk. Minerva
thought to use the opportunity to her advantage and requests that Trujillo allow her into law school.
Despite her attempts, Trujillo ignores her pleas responding with "The university is no place for a
woman these days," and he then continues to attempt to fondle her. Trujillo continue to try to seduce
Minerva, who quickly stands against Trujillo and states, "I'm afraid I'm not for conquest."
responding to Trujillo saying that Minerva would make a nice conquest. She realizes that she has
failed to persuade Trujillo and attempts to leave, but Trujillo holds her against him. When she
attempts to pull away a second time, Trujillo becomes quite vulgar. The third time that she attempts
to leave and fails, Minerva slaps Trujillo without contemplating the consequences. This obviously
angers Trujillo. The Mirabals depart from the party to avoid any punishment. Over the next few
days, the Mirabals attempt to apologize for leaving the party earlier, but are eventually called in by
Trujillo. Trujillo begins to make small talk about his dice and of the Mirabals breaking the law and
leaving the part early. Minerva then raises a question about the dice and of her request to be allowed
to go to law school. Trujillo expands this when he states, "I'll tell you what. I'll let you toss for the
privilege. You win, you get your wish. I win, I get mine.", Trujillo's wish being to bed Minerva.

Who Do You Consider a Hero in In the Time of Butterflies...
Who do you consider a hero?, a doctor, firemen, policemen, parents, guardians, or maybe someone
that dies for what they believes in, for example Martin Luther King jr. , soldiers , and even the
Mirabal sisters. In the book "In the Time of Butterflies" Julia Alvarez not only tells the story of the
girls, but how they fought for what they believed in and became the heroes we know today. She
paints a vivid picture of their lives, and the struggles they all had to face brought on by Trujillo. Out
of all these girls I believe Minerva was the most heroic, because she was passionate,a wanderlust ,

pg12. In this quote Minerva compares herself to a rabbit, just wanting to be free, wanting to know
what's really out there in the world, dreaming about want freedom actually looks like. Another
amazing quality about Minerva is that she always looked at the whole picture, a wide–range
perspective of things. As I read In the Time of the Butterflies I noticed that Minerva seemed to have
a wide–range perspective of things, stepping back to see the whole picture. "Sinita's story spilled out
like blood from a cut.", Minerva stated pg 16. As you can see Minerva describes Sinita's story as a.
It because it seemed very deep and never ending, very painful to her like a cut or wound. " I turned
into the dirt path and crashed into the ford, making the bumper curl up and shattering the window in
the back. Then I came down on that horn until he appeared, shirtless and furious in the doorway.",
Minerva stated pg 59. In this quote you can tell that Minvera is quite upset, as she describes in detail
how she crashed into the ford. Minerva's qualities make her who she truly is, a hero. she was
passionate, a wanderlust, and she had a wide–range perspective. She fought for what she believed
in, never giving up, dying for her beliefs, making her a hero to me and other young ladies like her or
in her position. She also seemed to be the only sister who challenged Trujillo, she wasn't afraid of
him. Now the question is , do you consider Minerva a hero or just a girl who believed

The Social Significance And The Effect Of Malls
When hearing the word 'mall' the most common examples that will come to people's mind are York
dale, Scarborough Town Center or Vaughan Mills. They picture these huge supercenters mini– well
known stores such as Garage, Le Chateau, H & M, Best Buy even Wal–Mart, etc. These places will
be filled with large amounts of people shopping. Food courts with a huge line up and a mini kiosks
asking people if you want to try a free sample. The way people view malls are different depending
on their point of view. I hope by the end of this report to show the social significance and the effect
the malls has on us. Describing the Object: Malls can vary from small regional malls (they contain a
cluster of retail stores) and to "megamalls offering a combination of shopping and carnival like
diversions to the festival malls specializing in recreational shopping to the intensely fortified ghetto
malls observed by Mike Davis" and even too neighborhood malls (the purpose to is to serve
consumers within a radius of two miles) (source 2). According to BLANK 2 all malls would love to
think that they are distinct and can offer something new to consumers yet they all tend to share
common features in terms of aesthetics, architecture, and design. BLANK 2 states the reason for this
is "that a high percentage of malls are planned and built by a few transnational architectural and
design firms" (source 2). HE/SHE 2 refers to this as the appropriation of local symbols within the

Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth: An Analysis
Doris Salcedo, a Colombian–born artist, challenges her audience to question their preconceived
notions about immigrants in the 21st century through metaphorically structured representations of
separation, pain, and unnecessary trauma. Salcedo's Shibboleth, in particular, encapsulates the very
essence of her politically–fueled practice. Exhibited in the prestigious Tate Modern in 2007,
Shibboleth starts out as an "extremely thin line, a crack made by the means of a dentist's drill" (Bal
1) and gradually widens throughout the year long exhibition. The actual crack in the infrastructure
of the Tate takes on an organic form; however, the composition of the large–scale piece with its stark
concrete and mesh wire indicates otherwise. Salcedo has described Shibboleth as a literal borderline
between Westerners and immigrants (Alzate). Salcedo, an outsider herself, strives to physically
show the segregation of immigrants in society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, this piece critiques the stagnant discussion about immigrants in white–driven media
and Westerner's persistent demand for a solution, or in other words, an expulsion plan. The media
commonly portrays immigrants as criminally inclined nuisances taking over predominantly white
countries. Shibboleth is ardently in conflict with this stereotype. The piece sheds light on the
emotional whirlwind of immigration: the actual fleeing of a home country under siege and
immigrants' futile assimilation into a country that so clearly sees them as an infestation. Shibboleth,
without a doubt, refers to Europe's current disapproval of immigrants, but I believe Shibboleth is a
piece for everyone that has ever felt persecuted or belittled in their life because of their religion,
color of skin, situation, etc. It is a piece that celebrates the

Occupational Therapists : An Occupational Therapist
I've always wanted to become an occupational therapist but I never had any the opportunity to
shadow one or even interview one, until now. This essay prompted me to ask my family if they
knew any occupational therapist whom I could conduct an interview with. Fortunately, my uncle,
Justin Corpuz, went to school with a friend who became an occupational therapist in the Philippines.
I was truly ecstatic to be able to finally interview an occupational therapist. The occupational
therapist's name is Ferdinand Salcedo. I conducted a very straight–to–the–point interview with Mr.
Salcedo–the interview was conducted in our native language Tagalog that made the conversation
more intimate and easy going. He works for Ultimate Skills Philippines, Inc. He gave me plenty of
insight of what it is like to be an occupational therapist. Occupational therapists have to live very
flexible lives where they need to settle into a friendly environment, treat different kinds of patients,
and prepare for any medical case awaiting them.
Mr. Salcedo emphasized that the key to a successful day is maintaining a friendly environment for
patients. He also emphasized that maintaining a friendly environment with your coworkers is just as
important, "Everyday should be a joyful day where you look forward to working together with your
friends and patients". It is important to note that Mr. Salcedo's team consists of another occupational

Examples Of Archetypal Criticism In In The Time Of The...
An American poet once stated, "Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the
utmost possible degree" (Pound). Every piece of literature has a impactful underlying meaning and
can be interpreted into universal symbols, motifs, and patterns. Archetypal Criticism is a theory
based off common myths, images, and symbols in literature. The definition of archetypal can be
defined as a very typical example of a certain person or thing (Davidson). With that said, Archetypal
Criticism can be applied to In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Alvarez uses common
character types, like the hero and the villian, and also uses the symbol of butterflies in her novel.

An example of this ia relating the Mirabal sisters to butterflies. Regina M. Cutter Edwards, an
Entomologist, states, "Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. [...] Around the
world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life" (Edwards). The
term "butterfly" was the sisters code name for the movement. The butterfly was a symbol for them,
not only because that is what they were called, but also because they symbolized what it meant to be
a butterfly. The Mirabal sisters changed from being little children, following their parents, to
individuals leading a revolution and having other people follow them. When Minerva was young she
stated, "I had thought it was caused by the bandages I had stated tying around my chest so my

to be one of his ladies. Minerva started out as a person that was fearful into a person that was

For ELL getting ahold of these tools is not as straightforward as it would be for students whose
primary language is English. Martinez–Roldan and Newcomer (2011) discuss how to evoke students
literacy skills in book clubs. Book clubs can be troublesome for ELL students because not only do
they have to understand the language, they also must be able to comprehend, process and respond.
To combat those difficulties Mrs. McDonald (a pseudonym) uses a wordless picture book called The
Arrival to get students to be able to partake in a book club. After the book was used students, who
were ELL, were able to discuss, create pictures based off the text, and create a comic strip story
(Martinez–Roldan & Newcomer, 2011, p. 190). Allowing ELL students to develop these literacy
skills in a way that does not immediately force them to read and do basic book reports and
discussions allows them to have more creativity with a language they are not quite comfortable with.
It also gives them an experience they can enjoy instead of dread.

Reasons: Six Stages And Levels Of Morality
As we move through life we learn and develop our moral reasoning. According to Kohlberg
morality and moral reasoning is the process of "six stages" and "levels" of development that start
from an early age to adulthood (Williams & Arrigo, 2011, p. 122). In addition, Kohlberg believed
that moral choices and behavior are established by cognitive thinking and reasoning like
imagination (Williams & Arrigo, 2011, p.122). Consequently, Kohlberg produces those six stages
which are grouped into three levels, first level is Preconventional Morality with stage one
punishment and obedience, and stage two instrumental purpose and exchange (Martinez, Salcedo,

In The Time Of The Butterflies And Antigone
In the Time of the Butterflies Essay
The novel In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez and the play Antigone by Sophocles, both
include similar characters, situations, and actions that react to the idea of a dangerous growing
authority. The characters Dede from the Time of the Butterflies and Ismene from Antigone both
strive to stay out of trouble with the government; however Dede's approach is more effective as she
becomes an oracle character by the end of the novel, for she lives to tell the story of the Mirabal
sisters. Dede uses her relationship with her sisters and her own family to survive through the
dangerous reign of Trujillo. When facing a regime such as Trujillo's regime, the survivors who live
to tell their story, like Dede, are crucial to understanding and analyzing important historical
moments. These survivors live through real tragedies, so they are primary resources with personal
opinions and experiences.
To begin, Dede's ability to support and stay in contact with her sisters without getting too involved
with the dangers of the government allow her to stay safe, as well as tell accurate stories from the
time of Trujillo's reign. Through all the struggles her sisters undergo, Dede still supports and cares
for them. Even after her sisters are freed from jail, Dede still finds herself in the habit "of staying
over the nights before our visits. She said she had to be at Mama's early the next day anyhow to help
with all of the children once we left"

The Path to Having Fate
Fate determines each person's will that believe it is meant to happen. In the book, In the
Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the four Mirabal sisters lived under Trujillo's rule before
they were killed after joining the revolution. The death of the three sisters was caused by fate
because their lives were being controlled by another's human hand, which was Trujillo, to have
fewer choices for them to choose their own path.
The three sisters had live with no freedom but to suffer in pain because a person with no freedom
can't have the power to speak for their rights. For example, "I'm not interested in admires until I

And we are rudely woken up. No chance of mistaking–even for a minute–where I am. I hide my

suffers her life by being in jail because of joining the revolution. Since Trujillo controls the three

this path because since she's against Trujillo, she wants her to take the blame and not her family.
Therefore, her fate determines her life in which she has limited of choices to choose for her path.

The Importance Of Music Education
In the high level education, foreign language requirement becomes more prominent and harder for
students to learn if they only speak English at home. With music it makes learning "second language
pronunciation accuracy" (Miendlarzewka and Trost) easier for an English speaking brain to
understand. When learning music there are very specific pronunciation requirements for vowels
from the world's most common root language, Latin. Considering this, music itself sets up a basic
understanding of different languages and sets the foundation of learning multiple languages.
In addition to the benefits on a child education wise, music education can also bring in many
cognitive skills that would not necessarily be introduced any other way. Some of these cognitive
skills that children learn from musical education; "verbal memory, second language pronunciation
accuracy, reading ability and executive functions" (Miendlarzewka and Trost). A basic skills that are
notably different with musically trained children and untrained children is most definitely listening
skills. Musically trained children are more inclined to hear the emotions and pitch meanings in an
individual's speech more than a non musically trained child would be. Similarly, those involved in
music pick up more than more in–depth listening skills; "Mastery of memorization, increased
quality of work, increased coordination, emotional development, pattern recognition, higher testing

speaking, single mother raised me in a foreign land that did not yet feel like home. The years flew
by and my mother and I grew together; we learned from each other and shared each other's load. I
became accustomed to the day to day battles she encountered to feed and clothe me; there was no
doubt in my mind that I would never wish this life upon anyone. The roots she managed to plant
through all her sweat and tears have become my garden. A place where we have both been able to
flourish into beautiful beings. At the age of six I learned how to speak English and served as my
mother's translator, a role I still carry to this day. At such a young age, I was stripped of a childhood
and exposed to the struggles of the working class.
Every flower planted is meant to bloom. Like a flower, we are placed on this earth with a purpose.
Fortunately, I have found mine in helping others. Unexpected challenges have risen and contributed
to my growth and understanding of individuals who faced battles in the face of adversity. ... Show

Many of the children whom I befriended also had mothers like mine, who wished nothing but the
best for us. As my mother's first child, she was not sure what it was that I needed in order to
succeed. The LBGC taught me what my mother did not have the time to do. I was enlightened and
provided with a voice, an opportunity to say what I had to say freely. I learned about the importance
of education, which would serve as my liberation. I began to appreciate each and every aspect of my
life. It takes a village to raise a child; the club happens to be my

The Deeper Meaning
An American poet once stated, "Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the
utmost possible degree" (Pound). Every piece of literature has an impactful underlying meaning and
can be interpreted into universal symbols, motifs, and patterns. Archetypal Criticism is a theory
based off common myths, images, and symbols in literature. The definition of an archetype can be
defined as a very typical example of a certain person or thing (Davidson). With that being said,

M. Cutter Edwards, an Entomologist, states, "Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of
life. [...] Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and

was a symbol for them, not only because that is what they were called, but also because they
symbolized what it meant to be a butterfly. The Mirabal sisters changed from being little children
following their parents, to individuals leading a revolution and having other people follow them.
When Minerva was young, she stated, "I had thought it was caused by the bandages I had started

Reflection About Identity

  • 1. Reflection About Identity In the book Letters from Young Activists, one of the letters by Guadalupe Salcedo, she says "[I]f I hadn't struggled through my own process of reflection and growth in regards to my identity, I don't think I would have learned so much about the world and why people are not only against similar issues but creating bridges between communities to overcome them" (86). The quote resonates so much with me because of my early stage as a developing young man who wants to be a positive addition to society. I am here at Brandeis University, an institution that wants to shape my form of thinking and provide me with innovative and useful skills for a future that I very much ignore at the moment, but that I am envisioning. The way I can envision is looking at what I think is wrong in the world, questioning how can I be part of the force that change the thing that is deemed as "wrong," and how does my identity fit in all this? Growing up as an immigrant, who for some time was undocumented, I realized how broken the system in the US was and it still is. When I first started to hear about the DREAMers, I was still undocumented and I felt pretty much that a cohesive voice was being raised to speak on behalf of me and many others. Those young child arrivals who never made the decision to be brought to a strange land, made themselves visible because of the lack of resources, they felt frustrated for the lack of social mobility. In Laurie Schneider Adams' article "What is Art?" and Marcel Duchamp's "The Creative Act", they have own criteria to definite what the nature of art, its meaning and its function. In evaluation Doris Salcedo's art work Atrabilious, a set of worn shoes encased in rectangle niches on the wall. Each year, more and more people from around the world decide to leave their home countries and move to a different place. Some argue that immigrants flood across borders, steal jobs, are a burden on taxpayers and threaten indigenous culture. Others say the opposite: that immigration boosts economic growth, meets skill shortages, and helps create a more dynamic society. This essay will examine the reasons and the consequences of immigration. In my view, the main reason of immigration is a strong desire of better life quality and safe future. Evidence clearly shows that immigrants provide significant economic benefits. Of the global annual flow of around 15 million migrants, most fit into one of four categories: economic (6 million), student (4 million), family (2 million), and refugee/asylum (3 million). Following Goldin, 2016, in the United State, over a third of documented immigrants are skilled. Similar trends exist in Europe. These percentages reflect the needs of those economies. Governments that are more open to immigration assist their country's businesses, which become more agile, adaptive and profitable in the war for talent. Government in turn receive more revenue and citizens thrive on the dynamism that highly–skilled migrants bring. However, sometime immigration causes many problems than it solves, resulting in negative consequences for both immigrant and their countries of destination. Most of refugees can't find jobs because of the lack of language skills and difficulties in adaptation. It is said that she focuses her work on giving a voice to victims of violence and the Third World countries. The Impact Of Spanish Rule On Puerto Ricans Today The Impact of Spanish Rule on Puerto Ricans Today What was Puerto Rico like under Spanish rule, and how important is that rule to the formation of the Puerto Rican people today? To answer these questions, we must take a look at the history of the Spanish and their colonization of the island of Puerto Rico. As we know, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain "found" by Christopher Columbus on November 19, 1493, and remained a colony of Spain for the next 400 years. But the interesting fact remains that Puerto Rico was not truly settled by the Spaniards until almost fifteen years later! The few surviving Tainos took off to the mountains for survival. The first two important elements of whom and what makes up Puerto Rican people, is here. The Taino Indians are 1/3 of the element. The second element, were the Spaniards. The Spanish now were the main people of the island, but there was only one problem now. There was no more gold to be found (which was the original reason most of the Spaniards came), and Puerto Rico had to be productive to Spain in some fashion. Facing the fact that there was no more gold, the Spaniards looked to the rich land and soil for the next way that Puerto Rico could help the Kingdom of Spain. They raised cattle, and they planted staple crops, but sugarcane was the bread and butter so to speak. The only problem was that they could only trade with Spain for a long time and Spain grew their own sugarcane, too. But let's not jump ahead of ourselves here. What was needed was a labor force to work these fields, and the Taino Indians were living in the Hinterlands. There was no way they were going to work those fields. This brings us to the third main element that makes up the Puerto Rican people. This third main element, were the African slaves that were brought in. In fact, the three main elements were all together on the island of Puerto Rico in a relatively short time span. The proof of this is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I had to be brave for Sinita."(Alvarez 17) She tried to be there for other people and listen to their problems no matter how hard it was for her. Minerva explained the story of Trujillo dancing with her, "He yanks me by the wrist, thrusting his pelvis at me in a vulgar way, and I can see my hand in an endless slow motion rise––––a mind all its own––––and come down on the astonished, made–up face." (Alvarez 67) Minerva did not like the way Trujillo was treating her, and instead of bowing down to his authority, she stood up for herself, which took courage. Minerva convinced herself to take a risk, "But I'm so sure I can beat him now that I know his secret. "I'll toss," I say, my voice shaking."(Alvarez 76) Minerva took risks to get ... Informative Speech How To Annotate Passage Properly Specific Purpose: To teach the audience how to annotate a passage properly Introduction Attention Material: Back in 8th grade, I wasn't great at reading passages and interpreting them. As you can see, this caused certain roadblocks for me as I would not be able to talk much in discussions regarding about passages. This problem was not really solved until my English teacher then, which was Mrs. Salcedo, teached me how to annotate passages. EFFECTS OF STRETCHING–MEDIATED TENSION ON VENTRICULAR CONTRACTION OF TOAD HEART INTRODUCTION Heart contraction is produced by stretching of sarcomere units, which produces strokes between myosin head and actin monomers located in the thin filament of sarcomere (Robinson, Dong et al. 2004). Changes in the resting tension of heart muscle affect the range of heart contraction. The heart has the capacity to adjust its contraction force as result of variations in ventricular filling (end– diastole), this effect is known as the Frank–Starling Law (Sequeira and van der Velden 2015). An increased systolic contraction is the results of the ventricle stretching due to greater end–diastolic volume happens (Schneider, Shimayoshi et al. 2006). However, ... Within the novel, "In the Time of the Butterflies," Mate, Minerva, Dede, and Patria had to create decisions to overcome obstacles that would transform each of their lives. Throughout the book, all of the sisters changed somehow. They all grew up, matured, and saw things how they never viewed before. While looking at these things at a different perception, they learned to make decisions that were sometimes brave and sometimes cowardly. Each of the Mirabal sisters had to choose whether or not to be fearful and give up, or be courageous and stand her ground, or make sacrifices to show her strength throughout the novel. It would take a lot of nerve to even think about creating a revolution. Even after Minerva got out of jail, she said "The butterflies were not about to give up, we had suffered a set back but we had not been beaten," this quote showed that Minerva would do whatever it takes to get the men out of prison, even if it is risking her life. Though it was not just the men she wanted to get, she wanted to get everyone's right to have freedom. Minerva was tired of Trujillo making all the rules without anyone else's opinion. She was at her limit of doing anything it would take. At this point she became fearless. Dede was known to hide from her problems that feared her. Dede did her best to protect her family, no matter what. When Lio gave Dede a note to give Minerva, Dede opened the letter first and saw what he said about wanting Minerva to go to the asylum with him. She refused, "Dede could not expose her sister to this danger," right after she read the note, she immediately burned it so Minerva could not find it or anybody else (Alvarez 83). Allowing Minerva going to the asylum would be a huge risk because all the recent refugees had been put in prison. Forthwith, they made Cabigbigaan (Bigan), the heart of the Ylokos settlement their headquarters which Salcedo called "Villa Fernandina" and which eventually gained fame as the "Intramuros of Ilocandia". The year 2018 was no exception, the streets were filled with excitement and the world celebrated and welcomed the New Year with fireworks, parties, dancing, delicious foods and parades. However, before welcoming the New Year many people took the time to observe "El Año Viejo." "El Año Viejo" is a very popular year–end tradition, which is celebrated in Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Puerto Rico and other countries in Latin America. This particular tradition calls for members of the community to come together and celebrate their many accomplishments as well as to reflecting and letting go of their "failures." The tradition of the "Año Viejo" is very particular in that members of the community are required to reflect on their accomplishments and failures throughout the year and are called to set "obligatory resolutions for change." The obligatory resolutions are therefore set and made public on the eve of December 31st before the welcoming of the New Year. Moreover, the "Año Viejo" tradition calls for members of society to be thankful for all the blessings acquired throughout the year. "Good people and bad people" are terms interchangeably used in this TV show and when deviance is depicted in the Narcos show, it is not only the criminals departing from the usual or accepted standards from society but also political and government officials are as much deviant as the Narcos themselves. I will also argue that this show uplifts toxic masculinity which is socially–constructed attitudes that describe the masculine gender role as violent, unemotional, sexually aggressive, and how toxic masculinity ruins society and men through the examples displayed from the show. Pablo Escobar, when speaking on deviance once said, "[A]ll empires are created of blood and fire". I agree with what Escobar said, because all empires have their positives, but at the same time many, if not all are built upon bloodshed and do we critique when great empires take over another country and the way they go about that with raping, torture or other means of submission? Deviance plays a big role in everything that has to do with building a great nation or a world–wide cartel. Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth: An Analysis Doris Salcedo, a Colombian–born artist, challenges her audience to question their preconceived notions about immigrants in the 21st century through metaphorically structured representations of separation, pain, and unnecessary trauma. Salcedo's Shibboleth, in particular, encapsulates the very essence of her politically–fueled practice. Exhibited in the prestigious Tate Modern in 2007, Shibboleth starts out as an "extremely thin line, a crack made by the means of a dentist's drill" (Bal 1) and gradually widens throughout the year long exhibition. The actual crack in the infrastructure of the Tate takes on an organic form; however, the composition of the large–scale piece with its stark concrete and mesh wire indicates otherwise. The piece sheds light on the emotional whirlwind of immigration: the actual fleeing of a home country under siege and immigrants' futile assimilation into a country that so clearly sees them as an infestation. The Mirabal sisters changed from being little children, following their parents, to individuals leading a revolution and having other people follow them. English Language Learners b. demonstrates an understanding of the types and benefits of bilingualism and bilingual programs and the importance of viewing use of the primary language as a right and as an asset for English Language Learners After doing fieldwork at Horizon on the Hudson's for two semesters I have worked with students whose primary language is Spanish. When working with ELL students, it is important to make sure their primary language does not feel like a burden to them. Cummins, Bismilla, Chow, Cohen, Giampapa, Leoni, Sandhu, and Sastri (2005) say that "English language learners will engage academically to the extent that instruction affirms their identities and enables them to invest their identities in learning" (p. 40). Martinez–Roldan and Newcomer (2011) discuss how to evoke students literacy skills in book clubs. Book clubs can be troublesome for ELL students because not only do they have to understand the language, they also must be able to comprehend, process and respond. To combat those difficulties Mrs. McDonald (a pseudonym) uses a wordless picture book called The Arrival to get students to be able to partake in a book club. After the book was used students, who were ELL, were able to discuss, create pictures based off the text, and create a comic strip story (Martinez–Roldan & Newcomer, 2011, p. 190). Allowing ELL students to develop these literacy skills in a way that does not immediately force them to read and do basic book reports and discussions allows them to have more creativity with a language they are not quite comfortable with. It also gives them an experience they can enjoy instead of dread. h. applies knowledge of criteria and procedures for evaluating, selecting, creating, and adjusting instructional materials and strategies and assessment systems and practices to meet the learning needs of English Language Learners and to promote their achievement of learning standards in all content ... According to Kohlberg morality and moral reasoning is the process of "six stages" and "levels" of development that start from an early age to adulthood (Williams & Arrigo, 2011, p. 122). In addition, Kohlberg believed that moral choices and behavior are established by cognitive thinking and reasoning like imagination (Williams & Arrigo, 2011, p.122). Consequently, Kohlberg produces those six stages which are grouped into three levels, first level is Preconventional Morality with stage one punishment and obedience, and stage two instrumental purpose and exchange (Martinez, Salcedo, Sailva, & Vanden–Berghen, 2018, p. 144). In The Time Of The Butterflies And Antigone In the Time of the Butterflies Essay The novel In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez and the play Antigone by Sophocles, both include similar characters, situations, and actions that react to the idea of a dangerous growing authority. The characters Dede from the Time of the Butterflies and Ismene from Antigone both strive to stay out of trouble with the government; however Dede's approach is more effective as she becomes an oracle character by the end of the novel, for she lives to tell the story of the Mirabal sisters. Dede uses her relationship with her sisters and her own family to survive through the dangerous reign of Trujillo. When facing a regime such as Trujillo's regime, the survivors who live to tell their story, like Dede, are crucial to understanding and analyzing important historical moments. These survivors live through real tragedies, so they are primary resources with personal opinions and experiences. To begin, Dede's ability to support and stay in contact with her sisters without getting too involved with the dangers of the government allow her to stay safe, as well as tell accurate stories from the time of Trujillo's reign. Through all the struggles her sisters undergo, Dede still supports and cares for them. Even after her sisters are freed from jail, Dede still finds herself in the habit "of staying over the nights before our visits. She said she had to be at Mama's early the next day anyhow to help with all of the children once we left" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With music it makes learning "second language pronunciation accuracy" (Miendlarzewka and Trost) easier for an English speaking brain to understand. When learning music there are very specific pronunciation requirements for vowels from the world's most common root language, Latin. Considering this, music itself sets up a basic understanding of different languages and sets the foundation of learning multiple languages. In addition to the benefits on a child education wise, music education can also bring in many cognitive skills that would not necessarily be introduced any other way. Some of these cognitive skills that children learn from musical education; "verbal memory, second language pronunciation accuracy, reading ability and executive functions" (Miendlarzewka and Trost). A basic skills that are notably different with musically trained children and untrained children is most definitely listening skills. Musically trained children are more inclined to hear the emotions and pitch meanings in an individual's speech more than a non musically trained child would be. Similarly, those involved in music pick up more than more in–depth listening skills; "Mastery of memorization, increased quality of work, increased coordination, emotional development, pattern recognition, higher testing skills, creative thinking, teamwork, and ...
