Laws relating to IT <ul><li>Legislation governs many aspects of the use of computers; it is the responsibility of organisations to ensure implementation </li></ul><ul><li>Data Protection Act 1984 </li></ul><ul><li>Misuse of Computers Act 1990 </li></ul><ul><li>Copyright Designs and Patents Act of 1988 </li></ul>

The Data Protection Act 1984 <ul><li>Exists to protect the privacy of individuals, its main areas of concerns being: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Data and information should be secure </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Private, personal and other data should be accurate </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Data should be stored and not misused </li></ul></ul>

Misuse of Computers Act 1990 <ul><li>Made three new offences: </li></ul><ul><li>Looking at someone else’s files without permission </li></ul><ul><li>Accessing and altering computer material without permission (hacking into the school exams & improving your grades) </li></ul><ul><li>Writing a virus to destroy other people’s files </li></ul>

Copyright Law 1988 <ul><li>Copyright law gives creators rights to control the ways in which their material may be used. </li></ul><ul><li>Rights cover broadcast and public performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting or lending copies to the public. </li></ul><ul><li>copyright occurs whenever an individual or company creates a work. Interpretation is related to the independent creation rather than the idea behind the creation. </li></ul>
