A Brief History of Computed Radiography
• 1973, George Luckey of Kodak filed a patent for infrared stimulable phosphor
or thermo-luminescent material.
• 1975, Kodak patent the first scanned storage phosphor system giving rise to
Computed Radiography.
• 1983, Fuji were the first company to produce a commercial CR system. Large
and mainly medical usage.
• 1983 to 2003 sees continual research in the medical advance of CR.
• 2004 Kodak start research into the industrial application of CR for aircraft,
welds, castings, corrosion, pipelines etc.
• 2005 Competitive commercial equipment for CR released into the medical
and industrial sectors.
• Original Image Plates (IP) were flat but now IP coatings are able to flex
meaning they mimic RT film qualities more and bend around pipe.

Why Change?
• Quick process. Film viewing in approx 2 minutes.
• No more ‘Shelf Life’ for chemicals or film.
• Operation at normal light conditions. No dark room.
• Completely mobile.
• Can operate independently of power source.
• High reliability.
• Up to 80% reduction in exposure time.

CR 35 Scanner Technology Simplified
• Scanner does not require darkroom conditions and can be
operated up to 1.000 lux without compromising quality
• Built in erasing unit facilitates handling and saves time
• Mobile or autonomous power supplies available, Lithium battery
• Light weight construction meets conditions for mobility
• Flexibility of IP allows close wrap up of object and reduces
measuring errors

Computed Radiography
Image plates come in Blue and White.
Equivalent to AGFA D4 and D7 respectively.
They can be arranged on a flat support plate.
Or curved round pipe. Dacon operate three
sizes, 14”x17”, 4”x17” and 4”x8”
Dürr NDT Image Plates offer up to 65,000
storable grey scale value data.
In addition to that, they tolerate over-and
under-exposure much better than any other
technology.

CR Image Plates
• No silver based film or chemicals; only a computer.
• Reduced exposure times than typical film.
• Image acquisition is faster; commonly 70% to 80% less than
conventional radiography.
• Reduced exposures time which reduces exposure to
radiographers.
• Images can be stored on disk or transmitted for off-site review.
• Theoretically, IP's may be reused hundreds of times.
• Smaller footprint, environmentally.
• High throughput systems.

Computed Radiography Differences
• No more Film
• No Film Processor
• No more Chemicals
• No Darkroom
• No more special Film viewer, just a PC
• Give the Customer just a DVD and the (for free) Viewer Software
• Easy and simple to Archiving the Images
