NHTSA 4, 432

reported to be killed
in traffic accidents in
the U.S.
● A survey done by the
NHTSA showed that
60% of pedestrians
expect drivers who
have the right- of-way
to stop if they are on
the crosswalk● 88% of pedestrian
related deaths
occurred during
normal weather
conditions

3. The ProblemThe Problem
● The 3-minute wait time at the traffic lights at the 4-
way intersection result in pedestrians experiencing
a longer wait time to cross the street as they have
to walk through two crosswalks. This also causes
for pedestrians to cross in dangerous ways such as
● Ignoring the crosswalk signal and jaywalking
● Crossing behind moving traffic
● Crossing into the median and waiting until traffic is
clear

4. The SolutionThe Solution
● The solution to this problem would be to have
another crosswalk built.
● The plan to achieve this goal will be to
● send a petition from the community to get another
crosswalk
● Call the transportation department and request a
crosswalk to be built

● Before presenting a case to the transportation department it is
always good to have valid points.
● These are the factors that are in the decision making towards
building pedestrian crossings according to the NACTO:
● Pedestrian compliance
● Speed
● Safety
● Demand
● Crash History

6. The ProcessThe Process
● To get a crosswalk built in your neighborhood is not really
complicated. You simply just:
● Call the transportation department and politely present
your case to the transportation department.
● If the transportation department does decide in your favor
then a contractor is usually hired to do the job
● Painting the crosswalk usually take about two days during
which the a lane may have to be closed

7. CostCost
● These are the cost involved in the building of a
crosswalk according to Amer Gilani of Traffic Signal
Management:
$2000-5000 for pavement marking- cost depends on
size of the crosswalk and quality of the paint
– $300-800 each for the walk signs

8. ConclusionConclusion
● Another crosswalk should be built on Grissom Rd and
Timberpath due to pedestrians frequently crossing the
road unsafely
● This can be made possible because there is:
– Support from the community
– There are valid points for the necessity of a
crosswalk
