Memorising pictures in your head may help you to remember 2.3
                     Funny phrases, sentences or
                                                 French words
some French words. Here are some examples:
                                                                                   Feuille
                                                                                                        Expo 1

                     • Saying ‘15 cans of beans’ helps me to remember that 15 is quinze.
                     • Saying ‘Five boats sank’ helps me to remember that 5 is cinq.
                     • Singing ‘Frère Jacques’ helps me to remember that frère means ‘brother’.

A
Work in a group. Think about the sound of the words. Can you think of a funny
                          way of remembering that ...
                          1 seize means ‘sixteen’?
                          2 où means ‘where’?
                          3 dos means ‘back’?
                          4 qui means ‘who’?
                          5 lit means ‘bed’?
                          6 août means ‘August’?

Another way to remember the meaning of words is by linking the word to another
                     word in your mind:
e.g. hiver is ‘winter’, because animals hibernate.
printemps is ‘spring’: put s in front of it, and you get Sprin-temps.

B
Can you think of ways to remember that ...

                          1 dix means ‘ten’?
                          2 bibliothèque means ‘library’?
                          3 médecin means ‘doctor’?
                          4 enfant means ‘child’?
                          5 sur means ‘on’?

C
Sometimes you will learn to spell a list of words for homework. In a group,
brainstorm different ways of learning to spell words. Think about work you’ve
done in English or Literacy lessons. List your ideas here:

You can help yourself remember the
‘Look, say, cover, write, check’ is gender of words by e.g. noting masculine
a very useful strategy for learning nouns in blue and feminine ones in red, or
to spell new words. highlighting them in different colours when
                                                                 you note them down.
