Water Pollution in Lake Huron
Water Pollution on Lake Huron
Water Pollution on Lake Huron
Introduction
Pollution is the presence of dangerous and unwanted substances in the ecosystem that causes
imbalance and health hazards to the living. Water pollution is the presence of unwanted substances
or particles in water, which causes imbalance in water systems. Lake Huron is among the largest
fresh water sources in the States located in North America. Lake Huron is one of the most polluted
fresh water lakes in America. It covers about 189 000 kilometers squared, and it is a component of
the Lauretian Great Lakes. It drains to the Atlantic Ocean through St. Lawrence River. It receives an
inflow from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, while it drains to Lake Erie. The population
surrounding the lake is about 3 million, which also contribute to its pollution (Ylvisaker 28).
Pollution of Lake Huron has been over the years either through direct point sources or through non–
point indirect sources (Saxena 1116). Direct point sources include sewage treatment firms and
industries, which direct their wastes directly into Lake Huron and its tributaries. Nonpoint sources
indirectly pollute water from the Lake, and majorly caused by man's activities and land policies
applied by the man.
Sources of pollution The major source of pollution in Lake Huron is the sewage. Sewage treatment
firms release their wastes directly into the Lake, and may contain harmful substances such as
mercury, lead and magnesium, if released

The Prospect Park Lake
The Prospect Park lake is the only one of its kind in Brooklyn. It is man–made and roughly 60 acres
(equivalent to 45 football fields!). It is located in the southern section of the park near the Parkside
Avenue entrances and between Prospect Park West and Ocean Avenue.
An intricate system of ponds and ravines keep the lake filled with water. The park's designers,
Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (also designers of Manhattan's Central Park), realized that
there were several natural ponds in the higher mid section of the park.
Consequently, Olmsted and Vaux engineered a ravine that would carry water downhill from these
ponds over a series of mini waterfalls and into the lake.
The lake is about 7 feet deep and is home to 20 species of

Oxygen Levels Lab
Results During this lab the temperature and Oxygen levels were measured at a multitude of depths.
The temperature at 0 meters was 27.26 °C. The temperature reading was then done at 1 meter below
was 27.2 °C. The Temperature than began to drop constantly until about 10 meters down where the
temperature was at 10.09°C. From this point the temperature dropped less dramatically until settling
on 7 degree range. The lowest Temperature was at the bottom of the lake being 22 meters deep with
a temperature at 7.35°C (figure 1). The oxygen levels demonstrated a slightly different graph than
the temperature. The oxtengen levels started at 11.84 mg/L. This saturation level rose for the next 2
meters peaking at 11.6 mg/L. Within a few meters the oxygen level dropped to 5.1 mg/L at 5 meters
deep, at 6 meters the oxygen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the summer, the lake becomes stratified as the surface becomes unequally heated by sun.
The way this works is by heating the surface by the sun. The wind then moves the surface of the
water to recycle the water. During the summer, the colder dense water falls to the bottom of the lake
and does not become apart of the mixing process. Secondly, the heat from the sun can only go so far
down and penetrate only a select few meters of the lake. The total depth of the lake that can be affect
depends on how clear the lake water is. During the spring and fall, the lake will undergo a period of
turnover where there is equal temperature throughout the lake and the water and nutrients move
more freely when the wind blows across the surface of the lake. This is the result of the cooling or
warming of the water to equal temperature, thereby creating a equal density throughout the lake.
This would mean the associated dissolved oxygen would become less stratified as a result of the
moving of

Descriptive Essay About My Small House
Clink! Bang! Crash! The my closet is overflowing once again. My small house is maybe a little too
small. I walked to the kitchen to get something to eat. I see the kitchen closet is overflowing with
pots and pans, again. The kitchen has a polished wooden floor easy to slip on if you're wearing
socks. Our kitchen is small, but big enough to put items on the shining counter. I looked out to our
backyard, I spot some fluffy looking white bunnies hopping along, eating the carrots I left out for
them. I dragged my body down the long hallway to my mother and father's room. I complain, "This
house doesn't have enough space!" My parents look at each other with a depressed look and sigh, "
We need to find a new house." The next morning it was a Saturday, I got dressed in so comfortable
clothes and headed towards the living room. I sat on the light brown colored couch. The couch had
different patterns, including the pillows. I picked up the remote and flicked on some TV shows. I
was in the middle of watching a show, when My mom and dad come to me with an excited look on
their morning faces. The light came in, shining on them like they're on stage. There was a long
silence, you could hear a pin drop. I looked at my mom then dad and did it again. Until my dad
finally spat it out, "We found a house were going today and seeing it!" I felt my excitement was
about to burst. At the end of the car ride, I stepped out the car door. I heard the crunch of the rocks

The Great Lakes, Lake Lakes And Lake Ontario
The Great Lakes, including Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake
Ontario, are the largest freshwater lakes in the world, accounts for about 18% of the world 's fresh
water resources. They are rich in water and other resources and the area of the Great Lakes extend
more than 1200 km. The storage capacity of Great Lakes is about 23000 km3 and the surface area is
around 244000 km2. Nowadays 1/10 of the Americans and a quarter of Canadians live in the lakes.
Some of the world 's largest industrial center is built on here. Almost 25% of total agricultural
production in Canada and 7% in the United States will yield in this area. Although the area of the
lake is large, it could be affected by a wide range of pollutions vulnerably. Lakes pollution sources
include soil runoff, agricultural chemicals, municipal waste, industrial emissions and waste disposal
exudate. It is vulnerable to be affected by the pollutants company with rain, snow and dust in the
atmosphere because of the broad surfaces of the lakes. The outflows from the Great Lakes are less
than the total storage capacity so that the pollutants directly discharged into the lake from the coast
or tributaries of the lake would be retained in the lake in the system. Consequently, the concentration
of pollutants will be increasingly higher as time goes on. Furthermore they will stay in the system
and continue to cycle through the food chain in the ecosystem because of the re–suspended
sediments. Other than

Crater Lake History
"Crater Lake is such a dazzling sight that it's easy to forget its origins" (Howells, 2011). Crater Lake
National Park is located in southwest Oregon. Crater Lake National Park lies in Klamath County
which is also northeast of a city named Medford. Crater Lake National Park is three hours and 43
minutes away from Salem, the capital city of Oregon. Its actual lake is located in the Cascade
Mountains of Oregon. Crater Lake National Park is 2,718 miles from Benton, AR and would take
one day and eight hours of driving to reach.
After the turn of the century, new conservationists came to power. They emerged into a political
party under Gifford Pinchot, the chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Forestry.

Steel, the founder of Crater Lake National Park, made the first recorded attempts in 1888 to stock
the lake with fish. Steel just wanted to stock the lake for recreational value. He originally placed six
species of fish in the lake. The stockings continued through the turn of the century until researchers
finally saw that the fish were reproducing. Out of the six species introduced, there are only two
types of fish still living in Crater Lake today which are the Kokanee Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)
and the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The Kokanee Salmon is a dwarf fish. These types
of fish are the best fish in the lake. The last recorded stockings were silver salmon in 1937 and
rainbow trout in 1941. Today there are thousands of fish in Crater Lake. An average Kokanee
Salmon is eight inches, but the record is 18 inches. The Rainbow Trout are way longer than the
Kokanee. The record breaker at Crater Lake was 6 ½ pounds and 26 inches. An average Rainbow
Trout is 10 to 14 inches long. (Fish of Crater Lake National Park) The long harsh winters at Crater
Lake make it difficult for animals to survive. Mother Nature has given these animals a hard time.
The main animal that can survive here are amphibians. There are eight types of amphibians that live
in and around Crater Lake. Amphibians are cold–blooded animals with soft wet skin. Most of the
amphibians live in the lake. Amphibians eat insects, worms, spiders, and other little creatures. One

Berkeley Pit Disaster
Introduction
When one hears someone say the word "Berkeley", there are many different ideas that come to one's
mind, such as Berkeley as in a girl's name, the famous Berkeley University, and much more;
however, of the many Berkeley's in this world, it is evident that the Berkeley Pit is of the most
serious environmental problem. A former open pit copper mine, Berkeley Pit, is now one of the most
closely observed disaster in our nature today.
The cause of the development of the chemical disaster traces back to the 1950s. As the Industrial
Revolution took place, mining took a significant role in city life. According to the Berkeley Pit
Public Education Committee, "in 1955, copper prices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, about 1,000,000,000 tons of material were mined from the Berkeley Pit" (Wikipedia,
2015). Therefore, the local problem of specifically finding an alternative to underground mining was
solved successfully. Although this original problem was solved, this brought about another serious
issue that still continues today. No longer being able to extract a good amount from the mines
anymore, the mines of Berkeley Pit were finally closed. Now, until this point of time, the Berkeley
Pit was just a gigantic hole in the ground, but soon enough the pit started to fill with groundwater.
To keep the pit from flooding, the Anaconda Company had to install water pumps in which inhibited
the rapid rate of the filling of water. By 1983, however, they eventually shut down all the water
pumps and left the pit unattended. The metals and minerals still in the presence of the mine
dissolved into the groundwater and rain and created a body of water that is as toxic as lemon juice.
No fish or organisms, except for algae, could survive such extreme toxicity.
How Science was applied To be more specific, one must learn more about the relationship between
the process in which this disaster with chemicals happened and the toxicology. As stated by
Pellicori, Gammons, and Poulson in 2005, the Berkley Pit when they analyzed the sample mine
water from the acidic pit, they looked into geochemical and stable isotopic

My Summer Vacation Essay
My summer vacation this year if you even call it a vacation has been insane. My summer started out
normal until the day I to went visit my dad. My parents had recently gotten a divorce so they no
longer lived together. It all started with the secret that my dad had no idea about. Just before I got in
the plane my mom gave me a hatchet, which I had no idea what I would ever use it for. I was getting
there on a bush plane with a very friendly pilot. He even let me drive for a while, every thing was
fine until he started having problems, big problems. Seconds later he was silent. Silent. That's when
everything went wrong. It took me awhile to figure out what's happening but I made somewhat of a
plan to ¨land¨ the plane. Once the plane ran out of gas I crash land into a lake somewhere in the
Canadian forest. Insane.
As soon as the plane hit the water it was a race to surface before my lungs filled with lake water.
The journey to the shore was tiring and bye the time I finally woke up from who knows how long
my face was fried and mosquitoes were eating me alive. Millions of things were flying through my
mind at that time, the pilot, where am, what do I do, food, and shelter. I didn't even know where to
start. Food. I knew I needed food before I could do anything. I grabbed a sip of water from the lake
hesitant at first. The pilot. I decided I needed the water so I got some anyways trying not to think of
the pilot. As I stumbled up the hill trying to keep the lake in sight at all times I found some sort of
berries and started shoving my mouth full of whatever those berries were. Once I got back to the
lake I realized eating too many of those berries made me feel like my stomach was tied in knots and
was being chewed by those berries and spit back out. Gut cherries. After that I knew I could not live
off those gut cherries,so I went in search for more food. About a hundred yard past the gut cherry
bushes were Raspberries. Then I really stuffed my face and didn't even realize that there was also
someone eating the berries as well, it wasn't a person; but a bear. Insane.
Since the food part was taken care of I needed shelter. I was thinking of making a lean–to until I
found a cavish like shelter that went a

Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake
Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001).
Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate
drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic
stratification of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that
is terminally stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body.
This water remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun
becomes clearer than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would be
ubicated beneath. This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly decreases.
In this phase, the temperature decreases 1 °C for every single meter that descends. Hypolimnion
would be the last stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air. (Korstad 2017)
Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the
quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists
between these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad
2017). A lake has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. The levels high
oxygen is necessary to maintain the necessary nutrients inside the water, and at the same time
providing a source food to all fishes. It is common to see

The Effects Of Water On Our Human Lives
Introduction: Water is not only a necessity to our everyday lives, but it also serves as an important
component when it comes to recreation. Knowing how to manage a lake or reservoir for these
different aspects is a key ingredient to satisfying our human needs; for survival as well as leisure.
Because less than 1% of all water on Earth is safe for humans to drink, it is crucial that these waters
be carefully managed to sustain current and future generations. Water–based recreation, such as
fishing, is important to millions of individuals throughout the world, thus it also has a large
economic impact. These types of lentic ecosystems are directly and indirectly related to their lotic
ecosystem counterparts. Because lentic ecosystems are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cultural eutrophication involves the artificial influx of nutrients into an aquatic ecosystem and can
have severe effects on the organisms that live within the ecosystem (Anders and Ashley 2007). The
most common source of these influxes of nutrients comes in the form of surrounding terrestrial
runoff and atmospheric input, thus being very sensitive to seasonal inputs (Guildford and Hecky
2000). Within the last few decades there has been a new process arise from the other end of the
spectrum, termed cultural oligotrophication, which is actually the opposite of eutrophication; it is
the result of a human induced reduction of the naturally occurring nutrients that occur in an aquatic
system (Anders and Ashley 2007). Waters affected by this type of oligotrophication tend to be very
clear and lack the nutrients that they would have had they not been altered to be aesthetically
pleasing to the human eye, thus having poor biological productivity (Anders and Ashley 2007).
Understanding that we need to manage lakes in a way that is in the best interest of the lake, and not
so that it is aesthetically pleasing, is vital to keeping these lakes healthy for years to come.
The objective of this study was to compare the nutrient (phosphate and nitrate) loads of two
reservoirs constructed for different purposes (one for drinking water and the other for recreation),
determine if the lakes were in a stable state for each of their purposes, and propose a

Preservation Restoration Of Degraded Or Low Quality Lakes
The majority of the world freshwater is shallow and confined to lowland areas (Beklioglu et al.,
2011). These shallow polymictic lakes usually with a depth of less than three meters are an
important natural resource and facilitate numerous services, as result having a crucial economical
and conservation value (Beklioglu et al., 2011). High quality of these lakes has become a political
obligation with initiatives such as the European commission's water frame work directive
implemented both locally and internationally. Therefore in order to maintain this value the
management restoration of degraded or low quality lakes is a widespread and key process. However
understanding the fundamental physical, biological and chemical aspects of the ecosystem is a
crucial starting block in these restoration process.
Shallow lakes have become the archetypical example of ecosystems with alternative stable states, a
clear state dominated by and submerged flora, and a turbid state with high phytoplankton biomass
(Scheffer et al., 1993; Scheffer and Jeppesen, 1998). Unlike turbid lakes, clear shallow lakes are
often dominated by submerged macrophytes which facilitate high biodiversity, high water quality
and provide higher lake aesthetic qualities, they are thus considered a crucial element of a healthy
clear shallow lake ecosystem. As a result from a conservation and economic standpoint the clear
state is the 'ideal' that is aimed for during restoration and management. Shallow lakes often

discovered the lake after following Lake Huron, which is relatively lower than Lake Superior.
Decades later, the French and Indian occurred, and as the British forces became victor, they

Minnesota's Glaciers
The Wisconsin Glaciation of Minnesota
A glacier is a large body of ice that moves slowly across land and are formed by there being a higher
snow gain rather than a snow melt. Glaciers move by a small amount of ice melting and the glacier
sliding. Glaciers can help and destroy the landscape in front of them but they can also shape the land
into something amazing. Glaciers were once present in Minnesota thousands of years ago and
played a massive role on the landscape we live on today, and as they melted they left behind large
amounts of water and formations. The glaciation is very confusing to those who don't know about
glaciers so here is some background information. The last glacial advance started about 75,000 years
ago and the last ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Outwash and till are similar but different at the same time and this is why they are both deposited by
glaciers, but the way they are deposited is what makes them different. Till is simply the sediment
left by the ice, outwash is deposited by the running water coming off of the melting glacier. Because
water can sort sediment, and ice cannot, that is why the till is unsorted. Sorting just means when the
rocks are sorted by size, bigger pieces together on the bottom, smaller pieces together on top.
Glaciers are constructive and deconstructive they are deconstructive because they tear up land and
the glacier does not stop for anything but it is easy to avoid. Glaciers erode the land and create
landforms such as kames, eskers, and drumlins those terms will be explained a little bit later.
Glaciers create valleys by shearing away the mountainside and moving it away. Some of the
landforms that glaciers produce are drumlins, terminal moraine, outwash plain, and an erratic.
Drumlins are elongated, teardrop–shaped hills of rock, sand, and gravel that formed under moving
glacier ice. A terminal moraine is where the glacier reaches its max and starts receding making a
deposit of till. An outwash plain is a flat area made by meltwater carrying outwash from the leading
edge of the glacier. An erratic is a rock or boulder carried from a place where the Rock is common
to an area where the rock is not

Descriptive Essay About Memorial Day
It was that time of the year again. Memorial Day weekend was finally here and that means one thing
in any Hesse's mind– the annual Molacek Fishing tournament! More importantly for me, I was
finally able to spend time up north in Bemidji at the lake with my entire family again. After the
grueling three–hour car ride crammed with my family of six, dog, and what seemed like enough
luggage for the entire summer, I had finally made it to my sanctuary, Beltrami Shores. The moment I
stepped out of the car my world was made of green and blue. As I was listening to the diverse chirps
of the many birds, my nostrils were bombarded by the scents of the pine trees, lake water, and fresh
north air. I have learned over the years to familiarize these smells with relaxing on the lake, eating
savory meals, spending time family, and disconnecting myself from my continuously busy life. All
of these great memories were once again relived on this particular Memorial Day weekend. As I
began fishing with my siblings and grandpa by my side, I felt a sudden surge of freedom. Fishing
has always been one of my favorite activities at my cabin because I am able to go deep into thought
and conversation while enjoying how beautiful the surrounding nature is. After a few minutes of
casting, I felt a sudden tug, pulled my rod, and started reeling in what I thought would be the biggest
catch of the day! I immediately belched "I got one!" to everyone else in the boat. Unfortunately, I

Great Impact Of The Great Lakes
The Great Impact of the Great Lakes
Glaciers are formed in places where there is adequate snowfall and cold temperatures; specifically,
the area needs to have temperatures that are less than 32* F and more snow than is able to melt in
the summer. Present–day, glaciers only form in high latitudes and high elevations. However, 14,000
years ago, during the Pleistocene Ice Age, Michigan was covered by a mile–and–half–mile deep
glacier. Over thousands of years, the temperatures alternated from warm to cool, causing the glaciers
to retreat and advance. As glaciers traveled this way, they took the path of least resistance. This
caused the glaciers to move south from modern–day Canada, along the riverbeds that existed where

In addition to the Great Lakes, the glacier also created kettle lakes in Michigan. These are lakes that
are formed by broken–off pieces of glaciers as they move. These pieces create indents in the land,
known as kettles (Glaciers: The Work of Ice). If these kettles are below the water level, a kettle lake
will form. Kettle lakes can usually be identified by their irregular, wavy edges and depths
(Schaetzl). One example of a kettle lake is Higgins Lake, a lake in Roscommon County, commonly
used for fishing and recreation, pictured here (MSU Hydrogeology). Because much of Michigan's
bedrock is sandstone, glacial erosion led to a large prevalence of sand in Michigan, creating
beaches, dunes, and wetlands. This abundance of sand has also impacted the shores. The glacial
deposits of sand throughout the state are transported by the westerly winds, moving from west to
east, creating dunes on the coast of Lake Michigan, but not Lake Huron. Dunes also exist somewhat
inland on the west coast of Michigan, while Lake Huron's sand is blown into the lake, creating a
sandy bottom (Ettema, 2010). One of the largest dunes on Michigan's east coast is the Sleeping bear
Dunes, pictured here (Sleeping Bear Dunes). In addition to the astounding features created by the
glaciers, their movement and disappearance also created an interesting interaction between the
lithosphere, asthenosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere. Isostasy is the interaction between the stiff
lithosphere and the

Several native fish to Lake Michigan include; Lake Trout, Sea Lamprey, Deepwater Sculpin, Yellow
Perch and Burbot (Tsehaye et al., 2014). However, these fish live in very different areas of the water
and prefer different water temperature. Per the Michigan Department of Natural Resources,
Menominee, White Sucker, and Longnose Sucker fish are all bottom feeders. They prey on aquatic
insects, fish eggs, small clams and crayfish. White Suckers prefer warm, shallow waters, but
Longnose Suckers prefer cold, deeper waters. There are various fish that cannot be found deeper
than 20–30 feet such as Largemouth Bass and Yellow Perch. Largemouth Bass are significantly
larger in size and will often grow longer than 20 inches, while Yellow Perch are much smaller. On
average, Yellow Perch grow to be between 4 and 10 inches long. The Largemouth Bass will prey on
aquatic insects, but also eat minnows and other small fish. Within the Great Lakes, there are some
species of fish that live in rocky areas. Brook Trout and Rock Bass are two fish that can be found in
shallow, rocky water. Both Brook Trout and Rock Bass mostly feed on aquatic insects and can

The Observation Of Five Years
Results and discussion The observation of five years (From January, 2007 to December, 2011) of the
biomanipulation work done in the lake Nainital for its ecosystem restoration is presented in this
paper. In this approach we attempted to manipulate various levels of the food chain, assuming that
the nutrient input is stable and cannot be reduced to limit the primary production. At the start of the
work important physico– chemical and biological parameters were measured to know the present
scenario of the lake. Among physico– chemical parameters the water temperature, transparency,
total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, pH, nitrate and phosphate were taken into

Descriptive Narrative
First time? No. Last time? Possibly. The rays of July sun pound down, scorching my pale flesh, but I
don't feel it. Fear augments inside me; unsure my limits, I persist.
The lake gleamed in the bright mountain sunshine, which would have been warm if not for the
breeze, yet all the campers are still full of joy. All except me. I stripp off my towel, revealing my
pale, goose–bump ridden skin and a thin black bathing suit.
My mom is staring out at the lake, the shining sun hitting her sunscreen smudged face, looking
chipper, she reaches down, to pet the dorkus, fuzzy not so white miniature poodle, Totoro, who
reflects the same emotion.
I look to my dad, desperately trying to hide the fear that was spewn across my face; he looks at me
and smiles, a confident smile, obviously not reading the terror I managed to hide.
"Ready, kiddo?" he queries.
"Yes" I lie, for I could never prepare me for the daunting task that lay ahead of me.
I fumbled to peel my shoes away from my feet, the warm, sunbaked sand creeping through each
crevice in every toe, filling them with warmth.
I stick my hand in the snow melt that makes up the lake known as Gerel Creek. Immediately, I
remove it, then soon replace it with my foot. One after the next, my feet carry me deeper and deeper
in the frigid water. At this point, I am waist deep in it, shivering, though the cold has numbed all
parts of me, from my waist down. Suddenly and unexpectedly, I plunge, kicking my feet against the
rock, and begin to

Persuasive Essay On Cedar Lake Dnr
Cedar Lake has been known for years to be a swamp of pestilence that many are afraid to touch, and
for good reason. The Factories that surround the lake used to dispose of their waste directly into the
water. Most of the chemicals are no longer in the water system, and the water quality is now good
enough to harvest fish from the lake. The problems faced now are sedimentation that has made the
lake shallow, and people's perception of the lake. The Iowa DNR working alongside the Friends of
Cedar Lake have a plan to deal with those issues, and make the lake a healthy center of outdoor
recreation for the city. Restoring, and improving the lake will give the people what they need.
People want to enjoy the outdoors, but many don't have the time or money to travel to rural
recreation areas. In The Hamburg Case Study, results showed that people felt recreation areas within
the city were more important (Boll, et al 5). There are many variables, but driving for hours is not
what most people want to do on their day off. That is if all of the people can drive. Children would
benefit most from having a place they can go to enjoy the outdoors. If a nice lake is within walking
distance, a Kid can ask to go to the lake as easy as asking to go to the park after school. The people
will be motivated to get outside, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing these people should see is a run down industrial area with some water by it that
doesn't look like much. In an article by Tim Smedley he discusses how being by a body of water has
a great impact on mental health, even more so than places like woodlands or gardens. This means
that the people who live here, and see that body of water every day will show improved mental
health even without using the lake directly. Then when people drive through the city, they will not
only see a beautiful lake that makes them think highly of the city, but they will also have improved

Negative Effects On Animals In Their Environment
Both countries have experienced polluted waters which have had negative effects on animals in their
environment. For example, in 2007, multiple sea otters were found dead in the Pacific Ocean and a
marine–wildlife veterinarian, Melissa Miller, determined that these otters were poisoned by a toxin
called microcystin, which is produced by blue–green algae. When fertilizers and human sewage run
into rivers and lakes, these toxins start to appear because nutrients are added that cause the growth
of algae known as "super blooms". However, sea otters don't go to the areas these blooms occur in
like polluted rivers and lakes. Miller then did some research and found that super blooms occurred
frequently in a lake, Pinto Lake, that eventually drains into the area of the Pacific Ocean where the
dead otters were found. The toxins were also found to be in shellfish which in a part of the otters'
main diet, so after this Miller concluded that the toxin travelled downstream in the ocean from
polluted lakes, where they found their way into shellfish, and eventually ended up killing the otters.
A similar event occurred in South Africa around the same time frame, but this involved crocodiles.
Toward the end of 2008, rangers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) reported that around 170
crocodiles were found dead in the Olifants river with a similar estimate a year later in 2009.
Veterinarians who performed the autopsies for these crocodiles determined the cause of death to be
pansteatitis which is a disease based on nutrients that paralyzes animals leaving them to drown or
starve to death, but it rarely affects animals in the wild. After some of the veterinarians did more
research and analyzed the crocodiles' fat tissue, they discovered that phytoplankton was the source
of the high intake of fats in these crocodiles. However, the crocodiles don't feed on it directly; so
they did more research and found that downstream of the Olifants was Lake Massingir which is
known for plankton blooms because of eutrophication. In the end, the veterinarians came to the
conclusion that the silver carp, a fish that was purposely introduced into Lake Massingir, accidently
escaped and found their way to where these crocodiles

Shoreline Assessment And Lake Management
Shoreline Assessment and Lake Management
Lakes face several problems, however, some of which stand out include Eutrophication as well as
Shoreline development, which happens in consequence to eroision. Both of these processes are
constantly at work, these problems are created by either natural forces or even by humans.
Eutrophication is the addition of minerals into lake water, these minerals include Nitrogen, as well
as Phosphorous. It is said that warmth and light both affect the overall process of eutrophication.
The process of eutrophication occurs only in certain lakes, however the perfect chemistry must be
present. It can be said that several lakes around developed areas go through "cultural eutrophication"

Shorelines, the narrow strips of land located along body of water. These areas are also transition
zones where land and water meet to create unique and highly efficient ecosystems. Shorelines are
valuable resources that provide numerous social, economic and environmental aid. For example,
shoreline ecosystems help purify water by filtering out sediment and trapping pollutants, including
fertilizer and pesticide residues and absorbing excess nutrients from both natural and human sources
that increase by human interaction . Shorelines also stabilize and protect the shores from erosion
through presence of vegetation and limit flooding by absorbing water by creating buffer sediments.
The littoral zone, extends from the depth to which sunlight can penetrate all the way on shore to a
distance from 10–20 meters, depending on the slope. This zone supports and contains up to 90% of
the life in a water body.( Schelenz, 2002)
Shoreline development, and other aspects (FIX THIS)
To further understand shoreline one must first understand the different types of shorelines. Shoreline
classified in to four categories; however, in doing so we must consider both human and natural
impacts.
Ornamental shorelines are areas that have been developed to focus on the shore's aesthetical look
and industrial value, with little attention to ecological consequences. There

Chemicals and Pesticides Found in the Great Lakes Essay
The chemicals found in water can be dangerous toward our health. We live near the Great Lakes
which supplies 20% of the World's fresh water. It also has chemicals that threaten the life evolving
around the fresh water. There are medical drugs that are being introduced to the fresh water lakes.
Stuff like antibiotics and steroids. These pharmaceuticals are posing danger for the environment.
This could affect the lake life,s growth. Pesticides are also found in the Great Lakes. These
pesticides are made up of dangerous chemicals like toxaphene and chlordane. The rain transports the
pesticides from crops to bodies of water like the Great Lakes. They are then absorbed by
phytoplankton and it moves up the food chain from there. Pesticides ... Show more content on

Alkylphenols can disrupt sexual growth. Perfluorinated compounds can lower sperm percentages in

Utah Lake Speech
I am writing to you today to talk about the state of Utah Lake and how to clean it up. Utah Lake is
the only lake that is easy to access without going on an hour or longer car trip from Utah Valley.
Because of that we should try and make Utah Lake more tourist friendly and better looking. This
would bring more people there and make it a better experience to be there. In its current state Utah
Lake isn't a very attractive destination. Utah Lake got 134,000 visits in 2017 which is pretty high
compared to other parks in Utah but it isn't that much compared the more visited state parks. When
most people think of Utah they probably think of Southern Utah. You could have more tourists come
to more places in Utah other than Southern Utah by giving more natural options in Central and
Northern Utah. Utah lake is already a pretty nice place to go and fish but other than that there is not
much else to do. You could make it a nice place to go swimming which would bring a lot more
people than just fishers. The three main causes for Utah Lake not being an attractive place are its
high phosphorus levels, the lake being shallow, and the non–native carp living there. All of these
factors work together to make Utah Lake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The solution to the carp problem is easy. You can either reward people for turning in carp to
incentivise people to not put the carp back and or you could send boats onto the lake that fish
specifically carp. The phosphorus is also pretty easy. What you will need to do is stop all dumping
into the lake to stop the phosphorus from going up, and then adding or breeding more fish into the
lake to naturally get rid of the phosphorus. But with adding fish you will have to make sure that it
doesn't upset the balance. In conclusion the solutions are pretty easy to pull off so it you shouldn't
need to put too much energy into

The Dictionary States That Fracking Is A Method Used For
The dictionary states that fracking is a method used for getting oil and gas from underground rocks
by injecting liquid into the rocks so that they can break apart (Merriam–Webster). Fracking can be a
controversial topic in numerous people's eyes due to the side effects that coincide with this
procedure. Fracking has evolved over the years and made a comeback around 2010. Lately, the
United States has heard tremendous news regarding this procedure and the drawbacks from fracking
natural gases and oil. Fracking can be beneficial; sadly, the side effects greatly outweigh the
benefits. The environmental risks, pollution, and the overall risk factors prove to not worth the risk
of fracking. Fracking is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The environmental risks that accompany fracking are potentially hazardous. In order to frack,
thousands of acres of forests need destroyed to allow roadways the space they need to exist (Lampe
38). However, these roadways allow erosion to occur due to the lack of vegetation (Lampe 38).
Along with erosion, siltation occurs and sand, soil, and mud sink to the bottom of rivers, and ponds
(Lampe 38). Therefore, the animals living in these habitats may migrate, or simply just die. Trees
situated on the acres of land for hundreds of years would have to be chopped down to make way for
roadways. In some cases, depending on where the oil reservoir is located, the state declares eminent
domain on houses and pays the landowners. Consequently, the houses will be destroyed and the oil
reservoirs will be fracked.
The greatest common concern on the subject today is water contamination. Individuals grew worried
that the chemicals used to gather these natural resources will seep into the water and contaminate the
United States. The water necessary to frack is gathered from rivers, lakes, ponds, and even aquifers.
This is then combined with chemicals and pumped into the ground. Fracking was exempted from the
Federal Safe Drinking Water Act and the chemicals used to frack are not tested frequently in our
water (Lampe 34). Bordering on 20 to 40 percent of the water used to frack rises back up to the
surface and is stored on site (Lampe 34). An

I Read Is Hatchet Book Report
Hatchet Book Report The book I read is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It is about a thirteen–year–old
boy named Brian. This story takes place in the Canadian wilderness without a specified time. I think
this book is both interesting and helpful because of its contents.
To summarize the story, Brain was the sole passenger on the tiny Cessna 406 bush plane. He was
flying from the U.S. to Canada to spend summer break with his father after his parents divorced.
The pilot has a heart attack and the plane ends up crashing in a lake after Brain controlling it for a
few hours. Brain survived. He is now alone in the wilderness. Al he has there are himself and a
hatchet that his mom has given him.

He kept telling himself "There, keep it that way. Short thoughts."(44) he did that in order to organize
his thoughts and not freak out. I admire that part about him because there won't be someone always
there to help you. Sometimes you are the one who has to comfort yourself.
Brain went through so much alone in the wilderness. He had faced wild animals such as a bear, a
skunk, and foxes. He knew how to deal with them for the most part. When the foxes were near him,
he knew to keep calm, not move, and wait until they leave. When the bear entered his home, he
scared it with fire so it won't come back. The skunk had attacked him without a warning but Brian
knew how to deal with the aftermath. He ran to the lake, took off his clothes, and jumped in. If it
wasn't for this story, I wouldn't have know how to act when there is a dangerous animal in me, how
to build a home, or catch fish and food.
His first attempt to get food was search for fruit. He walked around keeping the lake in his sight so
he won 't get lost. That was a smart move because I would have wandered around forgetting about
the lake. He wanted to stay by the lake not only for the water but because when people come to
rescue him, they will notice him by the water rather than between trees. Which, again, I would have
never thought about.
I also learned how to make fire, home, and catch fish thanks to him. When making a fire, he needed
fuel, so he got bark. He also needed oxygen, so he was

Reflection Paper
During the summer of 2017 I worked on two different internships or projects. Both of the
internships were completely different from the other. in one I work at a computer all day and the
other I would spend out in the field working hands on with different equipment. I got to experience
both ends of the spectrum of natural resource science. Both internships were helpful in helping me
figure out which fields of natural resources that I was interested in, and which I might be interested
in pursuing for future study and possible future job fields.
The first internship that I worked on was a grant that was contracted to the Central Lakes College,
and more specifically to Kent Montgomery, by the S.W.C.D. (the Soil Water Conservation District).
In this project / grant I worked with Kevin Gohman and we were asked to go to a set list of lakes in
Crow Wing County, and one river in Aitkin county, to take samples of the water and to record data
from the lake including: Phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and the amount of dissolved
oxygen in the water. We were also asked to record the clarity of the lake using a secchi disk, as well
as record the appearance of the water judged by the unaided eye and a list of colors they provided.
The scale of the appearance was 1A) Clear, meaning it was crystal clear transparent water. 1B) Tea
colored, meaning transparent water which has been colored by dissolved organic matter from
upstream bogs or wetlands. 2) Cloudy, not quite crystal

Pros And Cons Of Tulare Lake
Can This Lake Be Restored?
Now known as the 'phantom' lake, the Tulare Lake is a perfect example of one of all environmental
casualties that have occured because of mining and farming. This once incredibly rich in wildlife
lake is located in the San Joaquin Valley. West of the Mississippi, the Tulare Lake was once so big it
could stretch over 690 square miles across the Central Valley.
Fed by four major rivers and a handful of smaller ones with headwaters in the Sierra Nevada, the
lake was once 60 miles from tip to tip and 36 miles wide in the center. Thousands of Yokut Indians
and other tribes lived in this rich environment (The Tribune). For many centuries, these Native
Americans lived peacefully along its great shores and abundant waters full of fish and waterfowl
(San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center). However in the 1930s, the Tulare Lake
became dry due to dams that were installed by farmers. When these farmers installed these dams,
they choked of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The real question here however is why these dams were installed. Well you see, it all goes back to
the Gold Rush. Most accounts of the environmental damage caused by the Gold Rush focus on the
direct effects of mining. During the gold rush, many farmers saw the open opportunity to take
advantage of miners that had traveled from across the world. They increased the value of their food
to outrageous prices. Eggs were being sold for a dollar. A slice of bread was another dollar, two
dollars if you wanted it buttered. Today, adjusted for inflation, that one dollar egg would cost $30.30
(An Eccentric Culinary History). A skilled mason back then would have earned about $1.75 for a
day of hard labor. How does this connect to the reason why Tulare Lake is now dry? Well back then,
the Tulare Basin was full of wildlife. It was filled with fish, mollusks, waterfowl, turtles and sea
mammals. This was

The Low Water Levels in Lake Bridgeport
Lake Bridgeport was built in 1930 for flood control, water storage and recreation. Tarrant County
owns the land and water that makes the lake. There is a spillway that takes water through the Trinity
River to Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth. This year has been a rough year for Lake Bridgeport
with three digit temperatures and draining water to the other lakes. Since one of the purposes to
build Lake Bridgeport was for storage, The Tarrant County water district approved to let out 20,000
acre feet of water from Lake Bridgeport to prevent the other lakes to be low. "But 2013 is anything
but a normal year. Today, what once was a scenic lake is covered in chest–high weeds. " Boaters and
fisherman enjoy going to Lake Bridgeport during the summer. But in the summer of 2013 the boat
ramps were unusable so the number of residents going to the lake dropped. There are dead fish
floating to the shoreline as well as many other wildlife animals. The lake tested positive for Zebra
Mussel larva, which is shell like creatures that are very sharp and stick to boats, anchors and docks.
The Mussels are very dangerous for the lake environment, but they also eat bacteria so they could
help the lake water clear up. If no water is drained out of Lake Bridgeport then the residents of
Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth could possibly run out of drinking water.
Problem: The Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day, but how is it supposed to be any fun
when the lake is drying up each day.

The best moments were playing tag like a psycho maniac on crack with all of my friends. At the
time adrenaline had taken place that running on lumpy acorns barefoot couldn't even stop me
playing the game. The second place would be on my blue and yellow water trampoline, where we
play the violent game of king of the hill. One game had turned into a blood battle and that led me to
be pushed off the side. The next spot would be laying on the gray and silver dock during the fourth
of July. The exploding colors are similar to the colorful powders of india being thrown overhead.
Another place would be on the hot dog tube and holding on for dear life like a high politician
holding on to his good reputation. One time I had flung off and skipped across the lake like a stone
being thrown. The last spot is in the orange and blue colored kayaks racing to see who can get to the
beautiful small glistening bay first. At one moment racing lead to one of the kayaks tipping over and
getting filled with lake water. The three never collide but the beautiful scenery wraps it all

The Influence Of The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are surrounded by the northern United states, and southern Canada. Both countries
own the Great Lakes except for Michigan which is only owned by United States. The Great Lakes
include Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario. The Great Lakes are connected together by rivers.
The Great Lakes are also connected to the Atlantic Ocean with the St. Lawrence River.
During the 1970s the Great Lakes were polluted by many things. For example, oils, factory's waste,
mercury, and fertilizer. The water was filled with so much pollution that it didn't even look like
water. The water was filled with so much mercury and other toxic chemicals that it would dangers

Water Pollution In Lake Huron

  • 1. Water Pollution in Lake Huron Water Pollution on Lake Huron Water Pollution on Lake Huron Introduction Pollution is the presence of dangerous and unwanted substances in the ecosystem that causes imbalance and health hazards to the living. Water pollution is the presence of unwanted substances or particles in water, which causes imbalance in water systems. Lake Huron is among the largest fresh water sources in the States located in North America. Lake Huron is one of the most polluted fresh water lakes in America. It covers about 189 000 kilometers squared, and it is a component of the Lauretian Great Lakes. It drains to the Atlantic Ocean through St. Lawrence River. It receives an inflow from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, while it drains to Lake Erie. The population surrounding the lake is about 3 million, which also contribute to its pollution (Ylvisaker 28). Pollution of Lake Huron has been over the years either through direct point sources or through non– point indirect sources (Saxena 1116). Direct point sources include sewage treatment firms and industries, which direct their wastes directly into Lake Huron and its tributaries. Nonpoint sources indirectly pollute water from the Lake, and majorly caused by man's activities and land policies applied by the man. Sources of pollution The major source of pollution in Lake Huron is the sewage. Sewage treatment firms release their wastes directly into the Lake, and may contain harmful substances such as mercury, lead and magnesium, if released ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Prospect Park Lake The Prospect Park lake is the only one of its kind in Brooklyn. It is man–made and roughly 60 acres (equivalent to 45 football fields!). It is located in the southern section of the park near the Parkside Avenue entrances and between Prospect Park West and Ocean Avenue. An intricate system of ponds and ravines keep the lake filled with water. The park's designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (also designers of Manhattan's Central Park), realized that there were several natural ponds in the higher mid section of the park. Consequently, Olmsted and Vaux engineered a ravine that would carry water downhill from these ponds over a series of mini waterfalls and into the lake. The lake is about 7 feet deep and is home to 20 species of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The temperature reading was then done at 1 meter below was 27.2 °C. The Temperature than began to drop constantly until about 10 meters down where the temperature was at 10.09°C. From this point the temperature dropped less dramatically until settling on 7 degree range. The lowest Temperature was at the bottom of the lake being 22 meters deep with a temperature at 7.35°C (figure 1). The oxygen levels demonstrated a slightly different graph than the temperature. The oxtengen levels started at 11.84 mg/L. This saturation level rose for the next 2 meters peaking at 11.6 mg/L. Within a few meters the oxygen level dropped to 5.1 mg/L at 5 meters deep, at 6 meters the oxygen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the summer, the lake becomes stratified as the surface becomes unequally heated by sun. The way this works is by heating the surface by the sun. The wind then moves the surface of the water to recycle the water. During the summer, the colder dense water falls to the bottom of the lake and does not become apart of the mixing process. Secondly, the heat from the sun can only go so far down and penetrate only a select few meters of the lake. The total depth of the lake that can be affect depends on how clear the lake water is. During the spring and fall, the lake will undergo a period of turnover where there is equal temperature throughout the lake and the water and nutrients move more freely when the wind blows across the surface of the lake. This is the result of the cooling or warming of the water to equal temperature, thereby creating a equal density throughout the lake. This would mean the associated dissolved oxygen would become less stratified as a result of the moving of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Descriptive Essay About My Small House Clink! Bang! Crash! The my closet is overflowing once again. My small house is maybe a little too small. I walked to the kitchen to get something to eat. I see the kitchen closet is overflowing with pots and pans, again. The kitchen has a polished wooden floor easy to slip on if you're wearing socks. Our kitchen is small, but big enough to put items on the shining counter. I looked out to our backyard, I spot some fluffy looking white bunnies hopping along, eating the carrots I left out for them. I dragged my body down the long hallway to my mother and father's room. I complain, "This house doesn't have enough space!" My parents look at each other with a depressed look and sigh, " We need to find a new house." The next morning it was a Saturday, I got dressed in so comfortable clothes and headed towards the living room. I sat on the light brown colored couch. The couch had different patterns, including the pillows. I picked up the remote and flicked on some TV shows. I was in the middle of watching a show, when My mom and dad come to me with an excited look on their morning faces. The light came in, shining on them like they're on stage. There was a long silence, you could hear a pin drop. I looked at my mom then dad and did it again. Until my dad finally spat it out, "We found a house were going today and seeing it!" I felt my excitement was about to burst. At the end of the car ride, I stepped out the car door. I heard the crunch of the rocks as I stepped ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Great Lakes, Lake Lakes And Lake Ontario The Great Lakes, including Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, are the largest freshwater lakes in the world, accounts for about 18% of the world 's fresh water resources. They are rich in water and other resources and the area of the Great Lakes extend more than 1200 km. The storage capacity of Great Lakes is about 23000 km3 and the surface area is around 244000 km2. Nowadays 1/10 of the Americans and a quarter of Canadians live in the lakes. Some of the world 's largest industrial center is built on here. Almost 25% of total agricultural production in Canada and 7% in the United States will yield in this area. Although the area of the lake is large, it could be affected by a wide range of pollutions vulnerably. Lakes pollution sources include soil runoff, agricultural chemicals, municipal waste, industrial emissions and waste disposal exudate. It is vulnerable to be affected by the pollutants company with rain, snow and dust in the atmosphere because of the broad surfaces of the lakes. The outflows from the Great Lakes are less than the total storage capacity so that the pollutants directly discharged into the lake from the coast or tributaries of the lake would be retained in the lake in the system. Consequently, the concentration of pollutants will be increasingly higher as time goes on. Furthermore they will stay in the system and continue to cycle through the food chain in the ecosystem because of the re–suspended sediments. Other than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Crater Lake National Park lies in Klamath County which is also northeast of a city named Medford. Crater Lake National Park is three hours and 43 minutes away from Salem, the capital city of Oregon. Its actual lake is located in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. Crater Lake National Park is 2,718 miles from Benton, AR and would take one day and eight hours of driving to reach. Steel just wanted to stock the lake for recreational value. He originally placed six species of fish in the lake. The stockings continued through the turn of the century until researchers finally saw that the fish were reproducing. Out of the six species introduced, there are only two types of fish still living in Crater Lake today which are the Kokanee Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The Kokanee Salmon is a dwarf fish. These types of fish are the best fish in the lake. The last recorded stockings were silver salmon in 1937 and rainbow trout in 1941. Today there are thousands of fish in Crater Lake. An average Kokanee Salmon is eight inches, but the record is 18 inches. The Rainbow Trout are way longer than the Kokanee. The record breaker at Crater Lake was 6 ½ pounds and 26 inches. An average Rainbow Trout is 10 to 14 inches long. • 13. A Brief Note On The California Pit Disaster Hannah Park Period 6 Mrs. Suto Berkeley Pit Disaster Introduction When one hears someone say the word "Berkeley", there are many different ideas that come to one's mind, such as Berkeley as in a girl's name, the famous Berkeley University, and much more; however, of the many Berkeley's in this world, it is evident that the Berkeley Pit is of the most serious environmental problem. A former open pit copper mine, Berkeley Pit, is now one of the most closely observed disaster in our nature today. The cause of the development of the chemical disaster traces back to the 1950s. As the Industrial Revolution took place, mining took a significant role in city life. According to the Berkeley Pit Public Education Committee, "in 1955, copper prices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, about 1,000,000,000 tons of material were mined from the Berkeley Pit" (Wikipedia, 2015). Therefore, the local problem of specifically finding an alternative to underground mining was solved successfully. Although this original problem was solved, this brought about another serious issue that still continues today. No longer being able to extract a good amount from the mines anymore, the mines of Berkeley Pit were finally closed. Now, until this point of time, the Berkeley Pit was just a gigantic hole in the ground, but soon enough the pit started to fill with groundwater. To keep the pit from flooding, the Anaconda Company had to install water pumps in which inhibited the rapid rate of the filling of water. By 1983, however, they eventually shut down all the water pumps and left the pit unattended. The metals and minerals still in the presence of the mine dissolved into the groundwater and rain and created a body of water that is as toxic as lemon juice. No fish or organisms, except for algae, could survive such extreme toxicity. How Science was applied To be more specific, one must learn more about the relationship between the process in which this disaster with chemicals happened and the toxicology. As stated by Pellicori, Gammons, and Poulson in 2005, the Berkley Pit when they analyzed the sample mine water from the acidic pit, they looked into geochemical and stable isotopic ... • 15. My Summer Vacation Essay My summer vacation this year if you even call it a vacation has been insane. My summer started out normal until the day I to went visit my dad. My parents had recently gotten a divorce so they no longer lived together. It all started with the secret that my dad had no idea about. Just before I got in the plane my mom gave me a hatchet, which I had no idea what I would ever use it for. I was getting there on a bush plane with a very friendly pilot. He even let me drive for a while, every thing was fine until he started having problems, big problems. Seconds later he was silent. Silent. That's when everything went wrong. It took me awhile to figure out what's happening but I made somewhat of a plan to ¨land¨ the plane. Once the plane ran out of gas I crash land into a lake somewhere in the Canadian forest. Insane. As soon as the plane hit the water it was a race to surface before my lungs filled with lake water. The journey to the shore was tiring and bye the time I finally woke up from who knows how long my face was fried and mosquitoes were eating me alive. Millions of things were flying through my mind at that time, the pilot, where am, what do I do, food, and shelter. I didn't even know where to start. Food. I knew I needed food before I could do anything. I grabbed a sip of water from the lake hesitant at first. The pilot. I decided I needed the water so I got some anyways trying not to think of the pilot. As I stumbled up the hill trying to keep the lake in sight at all times I found some sort of berries and started shoving my mouth full of whatever those berries were. Once I got back to the lake I realized eating too many of those berries made me feel like my stomach was tied in knots and was being chewed by those berries and spit back out. Gut cherries. After that I knew I could not live off those gut cherries,so I went in search for more food. About a hundred yard past the gut cherry bushes were Raspberries. Then I really stuffed my face and didn't even realize that there was also someone eating the berries as well, it wasn't a person; but a bear. Insane. • 17. Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001). Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic stratification of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that is terminally stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body. This water remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun becomes clearer than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would be ubicated beneath. This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly decreases. In this phase, the temperature decreases 1 °C for every single meter that descends. Hypolimnion would be the last stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air. (Korstad 2017) Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists between these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad 2017). A lake has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. The levels high oxygen is necessary to maintain the necessary nutrients inside the water, and at the same time providing a source food to all fishes. It is common to see ... • 23. The Effects Of Water On Our Human Lives Introduction: Water is not only a necessity to our everyday lives, but it also serves as an important component when it comes to recreation. Knowing how to manage a lake or reservoir for these different aspects is a key ingredient to satisfying our human needs; for survival as well as leisure. Because less than 1% of all water on Earth is safe for humans to drink, it is crucial that these waters be carefully managed to sustain current and future generations. Water–based recreation, such as fishing, is important to millions of individuals throughout the world, thus it also has a large economic impact. These types of lentic ecosystems are directly and indirectly related to their lotic ecosystem counterparts. Because lentic ecosystems are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cultural eutrophication involves the artificial influx of nutrients into an aquatic ecosystem and can have severe effects on the organisms that live within the ecosystem (Anders and Ashley 2007). The most common source of these influxes of nutrients comes in the form of surrounding terrestrial runoff and atmospheric input, thus being very sensitive to seasonal inputs (Guildford and Hecky 2000). Within the last few decades there has been a new process arise from the other end of the spectrum, termed cultural oligotrophication, which is actually the opposite of eutrophication; it is the result of a human induced reduction of the naturally occurring nutrients that occur in an aquatic system (Anders and Ashley 2007). Waters affected by this type of oligotrophication tend to be very clear and lack the nutrients that they would have had they not been altered to be aesthetically pleasing to the human eye, thus having poor biological productivity (Anders and Ashley 2007). Understanding that we need to manage lakes in a way that is in the best interest of the lake, and not so that it is aesthetically pleasing, is vital to keeping these lakes healthy for years to come. The objective of this study was to compare the nutrient (phosphate and nitrate) loads of two reservoirs constructed for different purposes (one for drinking water and the other for recreation), determine if the lakes were in a stable state for each of their purposes, and propose a ... I've made a lot of old and recent memories in the Minnesota lake country. It is one of my favorite places to go because a lot fun things I do during the year. Out on the lake is one of the best places to relax, especially when the water is as smooth as glass with no wave movement expect when waves are generated by other boat. You hear the quiet crashing of the waves, the humming of the motor, the songs of the birds, and the occasional splash the fish make after jumping for the clouds. Being out on the lake is one of the best places to kick back, relax, and enjoy the majestic view, but the best view is of the sun as it sets for a good night's rest. • 27. Preservation Restoration Of Degraded Or Low Quality Lakes The majority of the world freshwater is shallow and confined to lowland areas (Beklioglu et al., 2011). These shallow polymictic lakes usually with a depth of less than three meters are an important natural resource and facilitate numerous services, as result having a crucial economical and conservation value (Beklioglu et al., 2011). High quality of these lakes has become a political obligation with initiatives such as the European commission's water frame work directive implemented both locally and internationally. Therefore in order to maintain this value the management restoration of degraded or low quality lakes is a widespread and key process. However understanding the fundamental physical, biological and chemical aspects of the ecosystem is a crucial starting block in these restoration process. Shallow lakes have become the archetypical example of ecosystems with alternative stable states, a clear state dominated by and submerged flora, and a turbid state with high phytoplankton biomass (Scheffer et al., 1993; Scheffer and Jeppesen, 1998). Unlike turbid lakes, clear shallow lakes are often dominated by submerged macrophytes which facilitate high biodiversity, high water quality and provide higher lake aesthetic qualities, they are thus considered a crucial element of a healthy clear shallow lake ecosystem. As a result from a conservation and economic standpoint the clear state is the 'ideal' that is aimed for during restoration and management. Shallow lakes often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first group of explorers to reach the lake were the French, during the 17th century. They referred to the lake as le lac supérieur, meaning "Upper Lake", as they discovered the lake after following Lake Huron, which is relatively lower than Lake Superior. • 31. Minnesota's Glaciers The Wisconsin Glaciation of Minnesota A glacier is a large body of ice that moves slowly across land and are formed by there being a higher snow gain rather than a snow melt. Glaciers move by a small amount of ice melting and the glacier sliding. Glaciers can help and destroy the landscape in front of them but they can also shape the land into something amazing. Glaciers were once present in Minnesota thousands of years ago and played a massive role on the landscape we live on today, and as they melted they left behind large amounts of water and formations. The glaciation is very confusing to those who don't know about glaciers so here is some background information. The last glacial advance started about 75,000 years ago and the last ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Outwash and till are similar but different at the same time and this is why they are both deposited by glaciers, but the way they are deposited is what makes them different. Till is simply the sediment left by the ice, outwash is deposited by the running water coming off of the melting glacier. Because water can sort sediment, and ice cannot, that is why the till is unsorted. Sorting just means when the rocks are sorted by size, bigger pieces together on the bottom, smaller pieces together on top. Glaciers are constructive and deconstructive they are deconstructive because they tear up land and the glacier does not stop for anything but it is easy to avoid. Glaciers erode the land and create landforms such as kames, eskers, and drumlins those terms will be explained a little bit later. Glaciers create valleys by shearing away the mountainside and moving it away. Some of the landforms that glaciers produce are drumlins, terminal moraine, outwash plain, and an erratic. Drumlins are elongated, teardrop–shaped hills of rock, sand, and gravel that formed under moving glacier ice. A terminal moraine is where the glacier reaches its max and starts receding making a deposit of till. An outwash plain is a flat area made by meltwater carrying outwash from the leading edge of the glacier. • 35. Descriptive Essay About Memorial Day It was that time of the year again. Memorial Day weekend was finally here and that means one thing in any Hesse's mind– the annual Molacek Fishing tournament! More importantly for me, I was finally able to spend time up north in Bemidji at the lake with my entire family again. After the grueling three–hour car ride crammed with my family of six, dog, and what seemed like enough luggage for the entire summer, I had finally made it to my sanctuary, Beltrami Shores. The moment I stepped out of the car my world was made of green and blue. As I was listening to the diverse chirps of the many birds, my nostrils were bombarded by the scents of the pine trees, lake water, and fresh north air. I have learned over the years to familiarize these smells with relaxing on the lake, eating savory meals, spending time family, and disconnecting myself from my continuously busy life. All of these great memories were once again relived on this particular Memorial Day weekend. As I began fishing with my siblings and grandpa by my side, I felt a sudden surge of freedom. Fishing has always been one of my favorite activities at my cabin because I am able to go deep into thought and conversation while enjoying how beautiful the surrounding nature is. After a few minutes of casting, I felt a sudden tug, pulled my rod, and started reeling in what I thought would be the biggest catch of the day! Great Impact Of The Great Lakes The Great Impact of the Great Lakes Glaciers are formed in places where there is adequate snowfall and cold temperatures; specifically, the area needs to have temperatures that are less than 32* F and more snow than is able to melt in the summer. Present–day, glaciers only form in high latitudes and high elevations. However, 14,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene Ice Age, Michigan was covered by a mile–and–half–mile deep glacier. Over thousands of years, the temperatures alternated from warm to cool, causing the glaciers to retreat and advance. As glaciers traveled this way, they took the path of least resistance. This caused the glaciers to move south from modern–day Canada, along the riverbeds that existed where the Great Lakes now ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to the Great Lakes, the glacier also created kettle lakes in Michigan. These are lakes that are formed by broken–off pieces of glaciers as they move. These pieces create indents in the land, known as kettles (Glaciers: The Work of Ice). If these kettles are below the water level, a kettle lake will form. Kettle lakes can usually be identified by their irregular, wavy edges and depths (Schaetzl). One example of a kettle lake is Higgins Lake, a lake in Roscommon County, commonly used for fishing and recreation, pictured here (MSU Hydrogeology). Because much of Michigan's bedrock is sandstone, glacial erosion led to a large prevalence of sand in Michigan, creating beaches, dunes, and wetlands. This abundance of sand has also impacted the shores. The glacial deposits of sand throughout the state are transported by the westerly winds, moving from west to east, creating dunes on the coast of Lake Michigan, but not Lake Huron. Dunes also exist somewhat inland on the west coast of Michigan, while Lake Huron's sand is blown into the lake, creating a sandy bottom (Ettema, 2010). One of the largest dunes on Michigan's east coast is the Sleeping bear Dunes, pictured here (Sleeping Bear Dunes). In addition to the astounding features created by the glaciers, their movement and disappearance also created an interesting interaction between the lithosphere, asthenosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere. The Factories that surround the lake used to dispose of their waste directly into the water. Most of the chemicals are no longer in the water system, and the water quality is now good enough to harvest fish from the lake. The problems faced now are sedimentation that has made the lake shallow, and people's perception of the lake. The Iowa DNR working alongside the Friends of Cedar Lake have a plan to deal with those issues, and make the lake a healthy center of outdoor recreation for the city. Restoring, and improving the lake will give the people what they need. People want to enjoy the outdoors, but many don't have the time or money to travel to rural recreation areas. In The Hamburg Case Study, results showed that people felt recreation areas within the city were more important (Boll, et al 5). • 47. Negative Effects On Animals In Their Environment Both countries have experienced polluted waters which have had negative effects on animals in their environment. For example, in 2007, multiple sea otters were found dead in the Pacific Ocean and a marine–wildlife veterinarian, Melissa Miller, determined that these otters were poisoned by a toxin called microcystin, which is produced by blue–green algae. When fertilizers and human sewage run into rivers and lakes, these toxins start to appear because nutrients are added that cause the growth of algae known as "super blooms". However, sea otters don't go to the areas these blooms occur in like polluted rivers and lakes. Miller then did some research and found that super blooms occurred frequently in a lake, Pinto Lake, that eventually drains into the area of the Pacific Ocean where the dead otters were found. The toxins were also found to be in shellfish which in a part of the otters' main diet, so after this Miller concluded that the toxin travelled downstream in the ocean from polluted lakes, where they found their way into shellfish, and eventually ended up killing the otters. A similar event occurred in South Africa around the same time frame, but this involved crocodiles. Toward the end of 2008, rangers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) reported that around 170 crocodiles were found dead in the Olifants river with a similar estimate a year later in 2009. Veterinarians who performed the autopsies for these crocodiles determined the cause of death to be pansteatitis which is a disease based on nutrients that paralyzes animals leaving them to drown or starve to death, but it rarely affects animals in the wild. After some of the veterinarians did more research and analyzed the crocodiles' fat tissue, they discovered that phytoplankton was the source of the high intake of fats in these crocodiles. However, the crocodiles don't feed on it directly; so they did more research and found that downstream of the Olifants was Lake Massingir which is known for plankton blooms because of eutrophication. In the end, the veterinarians came to the conclusion that the silver carp, a fish that was purposely introduced into Lake Massingir, accidently escaped and found their way to where these crocodiles ... Utah Lake is the only lake that is easy to access without going on an hour or longer car trip from Utah Valley. Because of that we should try and make Utah Lake more tourist friendly and better looking. This would bring more people there and make it a better experience to be there. In its current state Utah Lake isn't a very attractive destination. Utah lake is already a pretty nice place to go and fish but other than that there is not much else to do. You could make it a nice place to go swimming which would bring a lot more people than just fishers. The Dictionary States That Fracking Is A Method Used For The dictionary states that fracking is a method used for getting oil and gas from underground rocks by injecting liquid into the rocks so that they can break apart (Merriam–Webster). Fracking can be a controversial topic in numerous people's eyes due to the side effects that coincide with this procedure. Fracking has evolved over the years and made a comeback around 2010. Lately, the United States has heard tremendous news regarding this procedure and the drawbacks from fracking natural gases and oil. Fracking can be beneficial; sadly, the side effects greatly outweigh the benefits. The environmental risks, pollution, and the overall risk factors prove to not worth the risk of fracking. Fracking is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The environmental risks that accompany fracking are potentially hazardous. In order to frack, thousands of acres of forests need destroyed to allow roadways the space they need to exist (Lampe 38). However, these roadways allow erosion to occur due to the lack of vegetation (Lampe 38). Along with erosion, siltation occurs and sand, soil, and mud sink to the bottom of rivers, and ponds (Lampe 38). Therefore, the animals living in these habitats may migrate, or simply just die. Trees situated on the acres of land for hundreds of years would have to be chopped down to make way for roadways. In some cases, depending on where the oil reservoir is located, the state declares eminent domain on houses and pays the landowners. Consequently, the houses will be destroyed and the oil reservoirs will be fracked. The greatest common concern on the subject today is water contamination. Individuals grew worried that the chemicals used to gather these natural resources will seep into the water and contaminate the United States. The water necessary to frack is gathered from rivers, lakes, ponds, and even aquifers. This is then combined with chemicals and pumped into the ground. Fracking was exempted from the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act and the chemicals used to frack are not tested frequently in our water (Lampe 34). Bordering on 20 to 40 percent of the water used to frack rises back up to the surface and is stored on site (Lampe 34). An ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This story takes place in the Canadian wilderness without a specified time. I think this book is both interesting and helpful because of its contents. To summarize the story, Brain was the sole passenger on the tiny Cessna 406 bush plane. He was flying from the U.S. to Canada to spend summer break with his father after his parents divorced. The pilot has a heart attack and the plane ends up crashing in a lake after Brain controlling it for a few hours. Brain survived. He is now alone in the wilderness. Al he has there are himself and a hatchet that his mom has given him. This book contains a few major characters and a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He kept telling himself "There, keep it that way. Short thoughts."(44) he did that in order to organize his thoughts and not freak out. I admire that part about him because there won't be someone always there to help you. Sometimes you are the one who has to comfort yourself. Brain went through so much alone in the wilderness. He had faced wild animals such as a bear, a skunk, and foxes. He knew how to deal with them for the most part. When the foxes were near him, he knew to keep calm, not move, and wait until they leave. When the bear entered his home, he scared it with fire so it won't come back. The skunk had attacked him without a warning but Brian knew how to deal with the aftermath. He ran to the lake, took off his clothes, and jumped in. If it wasn't for this story, I wouldn't have know how to act when there is a dangerous animal in me, how to build a home, or catch fish and food. His first attempt to get food was search for fruit. He walked around keeping the lake in his sight so he won 't get lost. That was a smart move because I would have wandered around forgetting about the lake. He wanted to stay by the lake not only for the water but because when people come to rescue him, they will notice him by the water rather than between trees. Which, again, I would have never thought about. I also learned how to make fire, home, and catch fish thanks to him. When making a fire, he needed fuel, so he got bark. He also needed oxygen, so he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both of the internships were completely different from the other. in one I work at a computer all day and the other I would spend out in the field working hands on with different equipment. I got to experience both ends of the spectrum of natural resource science. Both internships were helpful in helping me figure out which fields of natural resources that I was interested in, and which I might be interested in pursuing for future study and possible future job fields. The first internship that I worked on was a grant that was contracted to the Central Lakes College, and more specifically to Kent Montgomery, by the S.W.C.D. (the Soil Water Conservation District). In this project / grant I worked with Kevin Gohman and we were asked to go to a set list of lakes in Crow Wing County, and one river in Aitkin county, to take samples of the water and to record data from the lake including: Phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. We were also asked to record the clarity of the lake using a secchi disk, as well as record the appearance of the water judged by the unaided eye and a list of colors they provided. The scale of the appearance was 1A) Clear, meaning it was crystal clear transparent water. 1B) Tea colored, meaning transparent water which has been colored by dissolved organic matter from upstream bogs or wetlands. 2) Cloudy, not quite crystal ... Through personal experience, I have had better luck fishing in Canada than in the United States. Every year, my family and I go on vacation to Senneterre in Quebec, Canada. It is about an eighteen hour drive to go fishing at Parent Lake Lodge. We stay for about two weeks in a small cabin. It's made of wood and a tile roof. We rent it from a married couple about sixty years old, Lisette and Rolan. It doesn't cost a lot of money, about two thousand dollars, to stay there two and a half weeks. • 69. Pros And Cons Of Tulare Lake Can This Lake Be Restored? Now known as the 'phantom' lake, the Tulare Lake is a perfect example of one of all environmental casualties that have occured because of mining and farming. This once incredibly rich in wildlife lake is located in the San Joaquin Valley. West of the Mississippi, the Tulare Lake was once so big it could stretch over 690 square miles across the Central Valley. Fed by four major rivers and a handful of smaller ones with headwaters in the Sierra Nevada, the lake was once 60 miles from tip to tip and 36 miles wide in the center. Thousands of Yokut Indians and other tribes lived in this rich environment (The Tribune). For many centuries, these Native Americans lived peacefully along its great shores and abundant waters full of fish and waterfowl (San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center). However in the 1930s, the Tulare Lake became dry due to dams that were installed by farmers. When these farmers installed these dams, they choked of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The real question here however is why these dams were installed. Well you see, it all goes back to the Gold Rush. Most accounts of the environmental damage caused by the Gold Rush focus on the direct effects of mining. During the gold rush, many farmers saw the open opportunity to take advantage of miners that had traveled from across the world. They increased the value of their food to outrageous prices. Eggs were being sold for a dollar. A slice of bread was another dollar, two dollars if you wanted it buttered. Today, adjusted for inflation, that one dollar egg would cost $30.30 (An Eccentric Culinary History). A skilled mason back then would have earned about $1.75 for a day of hard labor. How does this connect to the reason why Tulare Lake is now dry? Well back then, the Tulare Basin was full of wildlife. It was filled with fish, mollusks, waterfowl, turtles and sea mammals. • 71. The Low Water Levels in Lake Bridgeport Lake Bridgeport was built in 1930 for flood control, water storage and recreation. Tarrant County owns the land and water that makes the lake. There is a spillway that takes water through the Trinity River to Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth. This year has been a rough year for Lake Bridgeport with three digit temperatures and draining water to the other lakes. Since one of the purposes to build Lake Bridgeport was for storage, The Tarrant County water district approved to let out 20,000 acre feet of water from Lake Bridgeport to prevent the other lakes to be low. "But 2013 is anything but a normal year. Today, what once was a scenic lake is covered in chest–high weeds. " Boaters and fisherman enjoy going to Lake Bridgeport during the summer. But in the summer of 2013 the boat ramps were unusable so the number of residents going to the lake dropped. There are dead fish floating to the shoreline as well as many other wildlife animals. The lake tested positive for Zebra Mussel larva, which is shell like creatures that are very sharp and stick to boats, anchors and docks. The Mussels are very dangerous for the lake environment, but they also eat bacteria so they could help the lake water clear up. If no water is drained out of Lake Bridgeport then the residents of Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth could possibly run out of drinking water. Problem: The Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day, but how is it supposed to be any fun when the lake is drying up each day. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walking throughout the rest of the house, I saw the small dingy bathroom with plumbing coming out of the walls with holes everywhere and scum on the water on the shower walls.
