Introduction
Being a future public servant, we need to learn how to be
more sociable and how to be more accurate in dealing with public services
and issues. So, as a part of our curriculum, we need to find a government
service where can we do our on job training to complete our requirements
in college. On Job Training or OJT aims to trained and orient the students
about the work and their future career. It is a type of skill development
where a worker learns how to do work through hands-on experience. It is
a method that exposed students to different kinds of work related with
their course to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by performing actual
setting. OJT is also important not only to teach students regarding their
chosen career but also to show students the reality about working.
On Job Training allows those with no experience to work
and to learn at the same time. It helps the trainee to learn more about his
or her chosen field and practice what they learn. It also enhances
trainee’s competence and perseverance. This training also develops one’s
professionalism in dealing people and to handle situation properly. This
3. kind of program also helps the students to keep on socializing people
especially with their colleagues. He can learn how to build teamwork and
enhance critical thinking skills and abilities. The most value that a trainee
should learn in this training is to have a discipline. Ability to make
decisions as wide priority and evaluate works each day to know if
something should be improve.
Having a proper On Job training helps the trainees or the
students to prepare future professionalism on their future job. What
trainee’s learn, even those little things, must be apply not only for job but
also for their daily activities and daily lives. OJT will train students not
only academically but also socially. They will learn to communicate on
their co-workers and to solve problems about company not just only for
themselves but for all people involved in the group.
Being one of the students of Public Governance and being
a future Public servant, I must be able to comply all values regarding
sociable matter and I’m sure that this OJT will help me to enhance my
weaknesses and to build more my abilities. I allow this program to change
my views about being public servant and to know more myself better not
only a student but also how will be am I in the near future with my
chosen career.
About my chosen company…
When I enrolled second semester in school and I knew
that it was only practicum in this sem. I felt like it was easy for me to
handle this because my first choice about our OJT is to take in Pasay City
Hall, which is near in school and the benefits of having some friends to
take me in there easily. But, this point of view was different from my
4. thinking. When our professor said that we must look for a government
company, except city hall, for our OJT. My plans were lost.
Me and my classmates started to look for a government
company where we can take our OJT. We applied in different areas like
NBI, DFA and etc. but it seems like they were closed because as their
reason, we applied late and their companies are almost full for trainees.
Until we find out that Senate of the Philippines is still open for OJT
students. And yes! We got it. We passed and we will be a part of Senate
as a trainee.
Senate of the Philippines, located at the GSIS Building, Financial
Center Roxas Blvd, Pasay City, is the upper house of the
bicameral legislature of the Philippines, the Congress; the House of
Representatives is the lower house.
This is a brief history about Senate: The legislature in any society
performs the important function of deliberating policies for the people and
passing them in the form of statutes. Although the Philippine Legislature
was organized only in 1916, it had deep roots in the past. Long before
the Spanish rulers came to the Philippines, the people in their barangays
were already governed by a set of rules by their chief. Over the long
span of Spanish and American rule, various forms of legislative
structures were set up to perpetuate the colonial rulers’ desire to rule the
country. The Filipinos, just like other colonized people, fought for
independence from colonial rule. During this struggle, they also
recognized the critical role that a legislature could play in the movement
for independence. After the victory over Spain, they established the
Malolos Congress, based on their Constitution. The Philippine Legislature,
composed of the Philippine Senate and the House of Representatives, was
created under the Philippine Autonomy Act, popularly known as the Jones
Law, which was passed by the Congress of the United States and became
law on August 29, 1916. It served as the legislative body of the
5. Philippines from October 1916 to November 1935, until it was succeeded
by the National Assembly upon the inauguration on November 15, 1935 of
the Commonwealth provided in the Constitution of the Philippines.
During our orientation, I felt excited because it was my
first ever work. I woke up early coz I don’t want to be late. I prepared
myself and of course the feeling of mixed emotions. Orientation held by
the HRs explained to us what are the dos and don’ts inside the company.
They also explained to us what things should we do and they also gave a
brief introduction about Senate of the Philippines included the mission and
vision and the Values Statement:

These values are very important as a trainee student and
I know that I can handle it and it will be see in me.
Reaction and what I learned…
7. At first it was hard for me to continue waking up early in
the morning but as a determined student, I need to be strong,
competitive and disciplined person. On the first day of our OJT, We
divided in different department and I belong to Legislative Support
Service “C”, at first I felt so nervous to commit mistakes because I was
new in their department and I also felt afraid when I was having a
conversation with my boss and any other higher officials. But then, I
realized that I need to show my firm and I need to prove to them that I
am a determined person and willing to learn all works in our department.
I need to make them proud of me or I say make something that they can
amaze in me. I need to be flexible and versatile in any kind of
circumstances.
During my OJT days, I often practiced myself to wake up
early just to be on time every day, and Im proud that I made it. In my
everyday life in Senate, I learned so many things, I realized how
important to be a worker and how hard to be a worker. In line with this,
I’m proud to say that I did all my best in my On Job Training. I did all
commands of my boss and I know to myself that I did them properly. I
did paperworks and compilation of papers even thou sometimes I felt
confused where I will put these papers or where I could find them out of
many papers in our department. In this, I learned how to be organized in
things and how to keep records and how to be a clean man. I also
experienced answering phone calls and doing fax papers. I admit that I
don’t know how to use fax machine but like what I said, OJT helps us to
learn new things, and yes! I learned how to do fax that’s why on the next
day when my boss let me do fax it was easy for me. I can do fast unlike
before. In our department mostly of my activities are doing Microsoft
office, printing, Xeroxing, and robing.
8. During committee hearing, our department is very busy.
We are assigned in different works and helping each other to make the
day successful. In line with this, I learned how to be more sociable and
how to be patient. Patience in waiting so many hours sitting until hearing
will be finished. As time went by, I learned how to value intimacy, and
close-knit relationship with my boss and my co-trainees. I learned to
handle responsibilities as well as my accountability. I also learned
observed paper time management and act with speed and urgency.
For all those future trainee, as I experienced, I would
advise you the following: First of all, Pray before you do all things and
when you do, give your best, Focus on your assigned work or task, be
honest, be diligent, Don’t be shy, Be friendly, maintain disciplined and the
most of all, work with smile.
