I have decided to look at architecture for my next genre in photography. I have chosen architecture
as it is very different to fashion photography and looks at totally different materials and includes
different characteristics. In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists
in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be
made from the new medium. Early photographers did fairly often photograph buildings, often
working from the window of a convenient room rather than at street level.

Even thought the photo only consists of blue, it is made up of lots of different shades of blue.
The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way
the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue/black colour of the background works really well.
The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have
energy or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an
establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because
it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I
think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the
composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong
verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space.
The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural
lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been essential.

This photo is a newspaper from the stock market crash of 1929, when the Great Depression
started. On October 29 of 1929, the most shares in history were traded, and billions of dollars

Everyday we were intellectually taught about the different principles of photography; for me it
wasn't a hassle to learn it; it was more of an excitement a new adventure.
As I became increasingly fascinated with photography, a burning passion became to increase
inside of me. The need to take photographs was captivating; not only was it for a grade, but an

The photo that I have chosen is of a young girl in a pretty formal dress. She is holding a packet of
Minties, her favourite lollies. Her grandma gave them to her right after she performed in a concert
for her dancing school.

school. They were shocked; they'd only seen the older girls that gossiped in the change rooms before

As the doors opened and everyone moved into the building, a tall lady with red curly hair and a big
noise came into view. She was screaming instructions at everyone; they just kept walking through the
doors.
The young girls walked into change room 8. It was huge with ballet costumes on hangers.
There were lights around the mirrors just like in the movies. The little girls felt very glamorous.
They were told to sit on the ground and wait until Marie, the lady that would be looking after and
helping them get into their costumes, came.
The young girls sat and waited patiently, giggling excitedly about which costumes they would get to

All of sudden like a gust of wind the door flung open and in came the screaming lady with red curly

My passion for photography began in High School, from the moment I walked into Photography
1, I was in love. I seemed to have a good eye when it came to landscape and animal photography,
after hours of taking photos I would then spend hours in the dark room developing. For me,
photography has been no more than just a hobby. I admire all professional photographers, especially
those who specialize in newborn photography, because I envy them. I found Jessica Kennedy, of
Jessica Rachel Photography, on Facebook. Her style and ability to take beautiful photographs
captured my eye instantly. I did, what most people do, and followed her. I am always amazed
when her pictures display on my newsfeed, especially the newborns, I just can't help but look.

and turned to photography as a hobby. Then with a gifted DSLR (Digital Single–Lens Reflex) camera
she started researching classes in her area. She states "from there is snowballed", taking any

Family photographs have enabled me to develop a way to keep my family with me all the time,

The sweeping vista stretches out before me, offering a delightful study in contrasts, mountain, lake,

There is clearly an artistic value to this image – it is taken at the location of a massacre of over 200
members of the Great Sioux Nation. However, did Elliot Erwitt intend a 'deeper meaning' for this
photograph? In an interview recorded on his official website, Erwitt declares, "If it turns out to be
entertaining what I do, I'm very pleased. But it's not conscious." It seems that Erwitt claims to not
possess artistic intent in his photographs. However, it is clear that he simply boasts an

that of her family and friends. The result is a complex visual experience that addresses the use of
images in producing knowledge and making history.
Photographs are re–collections of the past. This essay is about photography, memory, and history
and addresses the relationship between photographic images and the need to remember; it is based
on the notion that seeing is a prelude to historical knowledge and that understanding the past relies
on the ability to imagine. At the same time, the role of thought and imagination in the production of
society––as reflected in the earlier work of Louis Althusser (1970), Maurice Godelier (1984) and
perhaps more significantly, Cornelis Castoriadis (1975), suggests yet another role for photography in
the construction of a social and cultural reality. Photographs in capitalist societies contribute to the
production of information and participate in the surveillance of the environment where their
subjective and objective qualities are applied to the private uses of photographic images in the
perpetuation of memory.
Photographs are also manifestations of time and records of experience. Consequently, writings on
photographic theory are filled with references to representations of the past. Roland Barthes (1981,
76), for instance,

Capturing a Moment with Photography
What can a picture really say? Photography can capture moments in time that will always hold a
special place in one's heart allowing them to remember the emotion they felt during that time. Picture
manipulations have been around for centuries and still exist today. In a popular picture from 1936,
Dorothea Lange displays two forms of manipulation. She removed something so little, which
represents so much by a method called technical retouching. It changed the whole emotion of the
picture. She also stage–managed her photo's to hide very important details that would have changed
the whole effect of the photo. Modern manipulations exist by Photoshop and could be more effective
than ever before. "Long before Photoshop and other image–editing tools, artists, photographers, and
composers were manipulating images. We still live in a culture and world where we want to
assume that cameras provide us with an objective truth" (When Images "Lie", 2011). Trying to
convey a message can be difficult, but with a little altering the message the photographer is trying
to portray can become clearer to the viewer. Trying to covey a message through a picture can be
extremely difficult because not everyone sees the vision of the photographer. Stage–managing is
when you set up a setting in a way that delivers an illusion for the viewer to perceive. Photographers
