HISTORICAL EVENTS
A)
1 The secondary schools movement describes a term used in
educational history literature describing era from 1910 to 1940
during which secondary schools started sprouting across the
United States.
2 The Kalamazoo school case. Sought to support high school
education, it occurred in 1874.
3 In 1876, the Meharry Medical College was founded in
Nashville, Tennessee. The college became the first medical
school in the South for African Americans.
4 In 1876, a system was published by Melvil Dewey called
Dewey Decimal System. Developed in 1873, DDC is recognized
as world’s most widely used library.
5 In 1879, the first Indian boarding school was opened in
Carlisle.
B.) I have chosen the secondary school movement and the
Kalamazoo school case as case studies to analyze my
similarities and differences.
Unique elements of historical secondary school movement are
as follows;
i) The period witnessed a rapid growth in high schools
graduation rates and national economy at large.
ii) The increase in secondary education for first half of the
twentieth century made it possible for high college graduation
rates after World War II.
iii) Led to a marked upsurge in some women in the U.S. labor
force.
Unique elements of Kalamazoo school case.
i) In Michigan State, the number of high schools increased from
107 in early 1870's to 278 by 1890.
ii) This event was a court case that sought to halt funding of the
public school using tax money.
iii) Kalamazoo established its first high school in 1658.
Similarities between the two historical events.
i) The growing credential value brought about by the two past
events gave residents in the cities an authoritative incentive to
push for more accessibility to high school.
ii) Through the “Secondary School Movement” high schools
started gaining more recognition, the Kalamazoo case further
entrenched high schools political legitimacy.
iii) Both historical events encouraged public support for the
concept of universal education and the belief that schools were
to serve poor and wealthy persons in society.
These events are still significant today because through them
public schools have been defined, and more, the funding of
schools by tax money is now legitimized.
The most important result of the "Secondary school Movement"
is the increased enrollment in high schools across the U.S. The
increased education opportunities had far reaching advantages
to the economy. The most important and significant result of the
Kalamazoo case is that it provided a legal basis for the funding
of public schools using tax money.

Running head: FREE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
1
FREE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
2
Free Public Schools
Several important events have occurred between 1929 and
1975 that have had a profound impact on the American public
education system. The first major event was the Great
Depression that began in 1929. The Depression began with the
stock market crash of October that year. Funding for public
schools is greatly reduced leading to lower salaries, early
retrenchments, and the closing of several schools.
In 1939, David Wechsler developed the Wechsler-Bellevue
Intelligence Scale. The scale calculates IQ scores based on how
an individual’s scores deviate from the average score of other
students who are of the same age as the individual. The
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is still used
countrywide to identify students who are in need of special
education.
In 1946, the 79th Congress passed the National School
Lunch Act. It became apparent that the year-to-year
appropriations by Congress were not an enough assurance that
school lunch programs would continue into the future.
Furthermore, the country had its share of experience when it
came to the falling off Federal support for donating foods.
There was a serious need to have a legislative basis for a
national school lunch program that was permanent.
The Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka of May 1954
was a landmark case in the public school arena. The Supreme
Court ruled that separate educational facilities were unequal by
simply being separate. The ruling was the precedent for several
cases that would follow and it paved the way for educational
equality in the United States.
In 1963, Samuel Kirk coins the term ‘learning disability’
to refer to children with perceptual disorders. The following
year, the Association for Children with learning Disabilities is
formed to cater to the needs of children with learning
difficulties and disorders. Currently, one-half of American
students who are beneficiaries of special education have been
diagnosed with learning difficulties.
Venn diagram of Historical Events
Association for Children with Learning Disabilities-1963
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-1939
Both events have had a profound impact on identifying and
supporting children with learning disabilities.
The above events are significant to this day because of the
impact they have had on understanding learning disabilities in
children and adults. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for
Children is a critical tool used in the clinical assessment of
children to diagnose attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as
well as any learning disabilities. The test is usually carried out
in a process known as pattern analysis. The Association of
Children with Learning Disabilities also uses the test when
gathering information about learning disabilities in children,
their causes, symptoms, and practical solutions.
If only one of these events could have taken place, I would
choose the formation of the Association of Children with
Learning Disabilities. This is because the Association has been
instrumental in identifying different levels of learning
disabilities and providing efficient support systems to children
with the disabilities, their parents, their teachers, and the
society as a whole. Through this organization, thousands of
children have received the adequate attention they require so
that they are able to learn and become integral members of the
society.
The most important results of the two events chosen are
the acceptance of children with learning disabilities into the
public school program. More than one-half of school going
children in America has one or more forms of learning
disabilities. Prior to these events, the concept of learning
disabilities was widely ignored. Children who suffered from
these disabilities were often ostracized in schools and in the
public. However, awareness of their inabilities has paved the
way for the society to accept them and accommodate them in
the entire learning process.
-founded in 1963; provides support to children with learning
disabilities through research and practical solutions; also
provides a network of resources for all stakeholders involved
-introduced in 1939; introduced the concept of deviation IQ; IQ
scores are calculated as a deviation of the average of similarly
aged students; helped in identification of students that need
special education
Rough Draft
At this point you should have approximately 15 events for your
Final Project. You will submit a rough draft of your project,
listing at least 10 significant events.
You must include the following for each event:
· The title of the event
· The year(s) of the event
· A summary (25 to 50 words) of the event
· An image that represents the event
· A caption that labels the image
· The URL of the image chosen
This assignment should be submitted in a Word document so
your instructor can comment on the content.
Hint: Although this assignment is to be completed in Word, it
would be best to complete the first 10 items of your timeline
on Tiki-Toki to ensure you know how to use the software
program. Include a reference page with a minimum of two
sources in addition to your textbook and format them in APA
6th-edition style.

Historical Events
a.List five events and the date each event/leader occurred.
(i) The Renaissance and Education in Europe, 13th,
14th century
(ii) Spanish and French Exploration and Education in the New
World, 15th, 18th century.
(iii) Education During the Reformation, 1517.
(iv) European powers in North America, 1st, Jan, 1770
(v) Establishment of New England Colonies In the North
America, early 17th century.
b.Choose two events and complete a Venn diagram showing (at
least three
in each category) the similarities and differences of each chosen
event.
The two events that I will use to complete this part of the
assignment include:
(i) The Renaissance and Education in Europe, 13th,
14th century(Renaissance)
(ii) Education During the Reformation,
1517.(Reformation)
Differences between the two events
(a) Renaissance and Education in Europe was a cultural
movement which kicked off from Italy spreading to Europe
while on the other hand Reformation was a Christian movement
occurring in Northern Europe.
(b) Renaissance provided a platform for the advancement in
architecture and art in general whereas reformation of education
promoted Protestantism.
(c) Renaissance
Similarities between the two historical events
(i)In both historical events, major changes were made that
reflect the modern way of life.
(ii)Both events are directly linked with transformation that
occurred in Europe in the early centuries.
(iii)Both events led to the improved access to education for both
the Europeans and the Native Americans.
c.
Address three of the following points.
· The above events are still significant because the impact
it had in the Education sector and the economy of the continent
of Europe are still felt to date. For instance, the Renaissance
also known as ‘Rebirth period’ a period characterized by
massive changes in the economy sector, the period of was
characterized by the fall of feudal system. For this reason, the
events are still significant.
· If these events could have taken place, I would choose,
The Reformation of Education, this is because during this event,
it was possible to bring to an end the constant abuses from the
Roman Catholic churches to in congregation.
· The following are the end result of the above events,
Reformation lead to the decline of Roman Catholic churches,
Renaissance, 13th , 14th Century led to the decline of the
federal system, Spanish and French Exploration especially in
Florida let to the development of more permanent settlement in
the Europe continent, this later on become what is currently
known as the United States of America. European powers in
North America, 1st, Jan, 1770 let to the establishment of many
primary, secondary and university schools in the Europe, this
offered an opportunity for the Latin American to get access to
education, the last event which is the establishment of New
England Colonies In the North America, 17th , in the event, the
Europeans wanted to colonize the whole of North America, but
they failed to established their colonies in the center of
influence leading to the colonization of America by the
Spanish.
Week 2
Part A: List of Events
Chapter three and four talks about the historical events
majorly on education. It was as a result of the movements that
United States enjoys some of the education privileges like
education for women and black Americans. Among some of the
events include; ratification of education under the articles of
confederations and the constitution, this was first ratified in
1781. The second event was the republican educational theorists
including the establishment for the movement for education for
women and African American by Rush in 1787. The next one
was the emergence of the public high school in 1821 which
offered education beyond elementary level. The fourth event
was the developments in the higher education in the early
national period. The last event was the movement for educating
teachers in 1823(Watras, 2008).
Part B
The development in higher education in the early national
period and education of teachers
The two movements aimed at making curriculum more
relevant to the demands of the society by having teachers who
could understand the needs of the society and the students and
be able to deliver that which could benefit them. They both
gave a chance to females to rake part in education both at
learning and at teaching the students. The two events developed
special curriculum which were used to guide the education
systems and they both aimed at improving the systems of
education (Watras, 2008).
The unique element in the development of higher education in
the early national period was the movement for educating
women in the new republican which was named as the cult
domesticity. Alternatively, the unique element in educating the
teachers was the establishment of various institutes for training
the teachers like the Colombian school in concord.

Running Head History .docx

  • 1. Running head: HISTORY 1 HISTORY 2 HISTORICAL EVENTS A) 1 The secondary schools movement describes a term used in educational history literature describing era from 1910 to 1940 during which secondary schools started sprouting across the United States. 2 The Kalamazoo school case. Sought to support high school education, it occurred in 1874. 3 In 1876, the Meharry Medical College was founded in Nashville, Tennessee. The college became the first medical school in the South for African Americans. 4 In 1876, a system was published by Melvil Dewey called Dewey Decimal System. Developed in 1873, DDC is recognized as world’s most widely used library. 5 In 1879, the first Indian boarding school was opened in Carlisle. B.) I have chosen the secondary school movement and the Kalamazoo school case as case studies to analyze my similarities and differences. Unique elements of historical secondary school movement are
  • 2. as follows; i) The period witnessed a rapid growth in high schools graduation rates and national economy at large. ii) The increase in secondary education for first half of the twentieth century made it possible for high college graduation rates after World War II. iii) Led to a marked upsurge in some women in the U.S. labor force. Unique elements of Kalamazoo school case. i) In Michigan State, the number of high schools increased from 107 in early 1870's to 278 by 1890. ii) This event was a court case that sought to halt funding of the public school using tax money. iii) Kalamazoo established its first high school in 1658. Similarities between the two historical events. i) The growing credential value brought about by the two past events gave residents in the cities an authoritative incentive to push for more accessibility to high school. ii) Through the “Secondary School Movement” high schools started gaining more recognition, the Kalamazoo case further entrenched high schools political legitimacy. iii) Both historical events encouraged public support for the concept of universal education and the belief that schools were to serve poor and wealthy persons in society. These events are still significant today because through them public schools have been defined, and more, the funding of schools by tax money is now legitimized. The most important result of the "Secondary school Movement" is the increased enrollment in high schools across the U.S. The increased education opportunities had far reaching advantages to the economy. The most important and significant result of the Kalamazoo case is that it provided a legal basis for the funding of public schools using tax money.

The first major event was the Great Depression that began in 1929. The Depression began with the stock market crash of October that year. Funding for public schools is greatly reduced leading to lower salaries, early retrenchments, and the closing of several schools.
  • 34. In 1939, David Wechsler developed the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale. The scale calculates IQ scores based on how an individual’s scores deviate from the average score of other students who are of the same age as the individual. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is still used countrywide to identify students who are in need of special education. In 1946, the 79th Congress passed the National School Lunch Act. It became apparent that the year-to-year appropriations by Congress were not an enough assurance that school lunch programs would continue into the future. Furthermore, the country had its share of experience when it came to the falling off Federal support for donating foods. There was a serious need to have a legislative basis for a national school lunch program that was permanent. The Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka of May 1954 was a landmark case in the public school arena. The Supreme Court ruled that separate educational facilities were unequal by simply being separate. The ruling was the precedent for several cases that would follow and it paved the way for educational equality in the United States. In 1963, Samuel Kirk coins the term ‘learning disability’ to refer to children with perceptual disorders. The following year, the Association for Children with learning Disabilities is formed to cater to the needs of children with learning difficulties and disorders. Currently, one-half of American students who are beneficiaries of special education have been diagnosed with learning difficulties. Venn diagram of Historical Events Association for Children with Learning Disabilities-1963 Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-1939 Both events have had a profound impact on identifying and supporting children with learning disabilities.
  • 35. The above events are significant to this day because of the impact they have had on understanding learning disabilities in children and adults. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is a critical tool used in the clinical assessment of children to diagnose attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as any learning disabilities. The test is usually carried out in a process known as pattern analysis. The Association of Children with Learning Disabilities also uses the test when gathering information about learning disabilities in children, their causes, symptoms, and practical solutions. If only one of these events could have taken place, I would choose the formation of the Association of Children with Learning Disabilities. This is because the Association has been instrumental in identifying different levels of learning disabilities and providing efficient support systems to children with the disabilities, their parents, their teachers, and the society as a whole. Through this organization, thousands of children have received the adequate attention they require so that they are able to learn and become integral members of the society. The most important results of the two events chosen are the acceptance of children with learning disabilities into the public school program. More than one-half of school going children in America has one or more forms of learning disabilities. Prior to these events, the concept of learning disabilities was widely ignored. Children who suffered from these disabilities were often ostracized in schools and in the public. However, awareness of their inabilities has paved the way for the society to accept them and accommodate them in the entire learning process. -founded in 1963; provides support to children with learning disabilities through research and practical solutions; also provides a network of resources for all stakeholders involved

  • 38. c. Address three of the following points. · The above events are still significant because the impact it had in the Education sector and the economy of the continent of Europe are still felt to date. For instance, the Renaissance also known as ‘Rebirth period’ a period characterized by massive changes in the economy sector, the period of was characterized by the fall of feudal system. For this reason, the events are still significant. · If these events could have taken place, I would choose, The Reformation of Education, this is because during this event, it was possible to bring to an end the constant abuses from the Roman Catholic churches to in congregation. · The following are the end result of the above events, Reformation lead to the decline of Roman Catholic churches, Renaissance, 13th , 14th Century led to the decline of the federal system, Spanish and French Exploration especially in Florida let to the development of more permanent settlement in the Europe continent, this later on become what is currently known as the United States of America. • 39. Part A: List of Events Chapter three and four talks about the historical events majorly on education. It was as a result of the movements that United States enjoys some of the education privileges like education for women and black Americans. Among some of the events include; ratification of education under the articles of confederations and the constitution, this was first ratified in 1781. The second event was the republican educational theorists including the establishment for the movement for education for women and African American by Rush in 1787. The next one was the emergence of the public high school in 1821 which offered education beyond elementary level. The fourth event was the developments in the higher education in the early national period. The last event was the movement for educating teachers in 1823(Watras, 2008). Part B The development in higher education in the early national period and education of teachers The two movements aimed at making curriculum more relevant to the demands of the society by having teachers who could understand the needs of the society and the students and be able to deliver that which could benefit them. They both gave a chance to females to rake part in education both at learning and at teaching the students. The two events developed special curriculum which were used to guide the education systems and they both aimed at improving the systems of education (Watras, 2008). The unique element in the development of higher education in the early national period was the movement for educating women in the new republican which was named as the cult domesticity. Alternatively, the unique element in educating the teachers was the establishment of various institutes for training the teachers like the Colombian school in concord. References Watras, J. (2008).
