2. PROJECT OVERVIEW
A book jacket communicates to the reader the
mood, tone, and sometimes story line of the
book that they are about to read. Book Jacket’s
should grab people’s attention and portray
meaning. I chose to redesign the novel, “Texts
From Bennett,” by Mac Lethal because it is a
hilarious, crazy, and original book. Also, I do not
think the original cover was the perfect choice
because the scene with a phone in a beer glass
never actually appears in the novel. It does tell
the reader about his character, however, I felt
the jacket could be executed more effectively. I
read, took notes, and analyzed this novel. My research gave me the information needed in order
to design 3 different book jacket approaches: a
typographic, image-based, and non-computer.
4. BOOK SYNOPSIS
Hardworking Kansas City Rapper Mac Lethal has
a problem, and its name is Bennett. His wannabe gangsta cousin is seventeen, uses drugs
and foul language, claims to be 13 percent black,
and swears he speaks “da female language.”
(Strangely that last one sort of seems true.)
But as different as they are, when Bennett and
his mom lose their home, Mac’s got their backs.
They’re family after all. Sure, it takes patience to
live with the eternally smoked-out Bennett and
the pill-popped Aunt Lily, but he can handle it.
You know who can’t? Mac’s very pretty, WASPy,
very uptight girlfriend. So as his once-peaceful
household gets completely crazy, Mac learns
that blood wanna-be-Crips are thicker than
water, that his little cousin flawed, irreverent, and
basically a Saturday morning cartoon gone horrible wrong has become his mentor, and that he
really has no idea what’s up with girls.
8. BOOK RESEARCH:
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Author: Mac Lethal
Real name: David McCleary Sheldon
Indie hip hop artist, From Kansas City, Missouri,
Irish, Founded Black Clover Records, He rapped
“Look at Me Now” while preparing pancakes in
his kitchen on youtube and reached millions of
views. This led to interviews with CNN and The
Washington Post. In 1998 he would go on to win
several rap battles against local emcees from
rival Kansas City high schools, and began to generate a buzz amongst the very small, tightly knit
Kansas City underground hip-hop community.
Mac entered the emcee battle at Scribble Jam
hip-hop festival in August 2001 and took second
place in the finals. He returned in 2002 and won
the competition, and took second place in 2004.
Sage Francis would later take Mac on the F*ck
Clear Channel Tour in 2004.
In 2006, Mac Lethal founded Black Clover Records with longtime friend Jeremy Willis. Mac
Lethal hosts Black Clover Radio Hour on the Kansas City alternative station 96.5 The Buzz. It has
aired every Sunday night since the end of 2005.
