born as a slave in a
log cabin. There is

Childhood
While he
was there, he spent
his time cleaning
the yards, giving

the fields, and

3. Becoming Free
He soon heard of
freedom and that there was a
great possibility he would be
freed soon. He explained in
his book how the slaves
started to sing more when
they heard of this. The day
had finally came.
Him and his family and
him moved to Malden, Ohio
immediately.
4. Working
He worked at a salt furnace after he was freed.
He then worked in the coal mines.
He left the coal mines and worked for Mrs.
Ruffner, where he would clean and repair her house.
Worked for a sailor to earn some money by helping
him unload his ship.
He then became a janitor at Hampton.
5. Education
Washington was determined to get an
education. Even after his stepfather made him
work instead of go to school, his mother helped
him reach his dreams. She bought him a book
that taught him the Alphabet. She made it
possible for him to go night classes. He then
attended Hampton, which is what impacted him
the most.

General Samuel C. Armstrong-
lived with Washington during his
last 6 months of life (General’s
life), taught at Hampton, well
respected by the students, had
the idea to stay in tents because
the dorms were crowded
President Grover Cleveland-
After Washington sent him his
address that he made at the
Atlantic Explosion, the president
came to meet him and sent him
a letter of gratitude and respect

8. His views
He did not think there should be a
law against blacks voting, but he
thinks all people should take
educational tests or property tests
to prove their intelligence.
He believed that putting both races
together would benefit the country
with what everyone had to offer.
He did not think they should be
equal but that the blacks should
accept the fact that the whites
want to be socially segregated and
that the whites should give blacks
the opportunities they want.
