2. Background:
• Chosen to be the capitol in 1824. Tallahassee, is
one of the biggest contributors to the growth of
Florida into the beautiful place we call home or
also known as the “Sunshine State”.
• Once a capitol that began in log cabins in 1824 to
now a massive 22-story capitol complex building
with chambers for both House and Senate. The
building itself has become a center piece for
Floridian political pride.

• 1845- Tallahassee is chosen as a capitol. Log cabins served as the capitol
building for the time being.
• 1826- After a growing nation was becoming more of a task for its
government to handle legislature would fund the construction of a two-
story masonry building which actually would never see completion due to
lack of funding after the job initially started.
• 1839- Non finished capitol structure is torn down in turn for construction
of a new capitol building.
• 1845- the present Historic Capitol Building was completed and is the same
structure that sits atop Apalachee Street today.
• 1902- First addition was made by architect Frank Millburn with the
addition of the classic style dome within the structure.
• 1923-Henry Klutho would make his contribution with the expansion of
wings on both ends of the structure.
• 1936 & 1947- larger wings are created to act as chambers for the House of
Representatives and Senate.

capitol.
• If one is interested in a structure that has
followed Florida and its history since the year
1845. The building alone makes one feel a great
amount of pride for the State of Florida since it
has stood through many years of development as
Florida became the “sunshine state” we know
and love today. One will not only learn journey
Florida has gone through but also will learn about
the architectural changes and additions that were
done alone the way through the beggining years
to now.
