• The history of New Orleans, Louisiana traces the city's
development from its founding by the French, through
its period under Spanish control, then back to French
rule before being sold to the United States in the
Louisiana Purchase. It was the largest port in the South,
exporting most of the nation's cotton output to Europe
and New England. In the 19th century it was the largest
and most important city in the South and the U.S.,
known for its exotic social life and corrupt politics. It
remains a major tourist attraction, even after the
massive destruction of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The
most important event there is de mardi grass, jazz fest
and sugar bowl.
